Louis Pasteur was born in Dole, France on December 27,1822.His family was poor, and during his early education Pasteur was an ordinary student who enjoyed art and singing. However, when Pasteur was exposed to science as a teenager, he knew he found his career.
In 1848,Pasteur went to college to become a science teacher. He then became a chemistry professor at the University of Strasbourg. He got married in 1849 and had five children. However, three died young from typhoid fever (伤寒).It was the deaths of his children that drove Pasteur to investigate infectious diseases in order to find a cure.

“Snowplow (扫雪机) parenting” is the newest parenting style that can include parents booking their adult children haircuts, calling their college kids to wake them up so that they don't sleep through a test, and even calling their kids' employers.
“‘Helicopter (直升机)parenting’ means monitoring their kids' every activity, which is out of date.” Claire Cain Miller and Jonah Engel Bromwich wrote in The New York Times.“Some rich mothers and fathers now are more like snowplows: clearing any problems in their children's path to success so that they don't have to meet failure or lose opportunities.” There is a mother who started a charity in her son's name to try to raise his chances of being accepted to the college. One set of parents spent years helping their daughter avoid foods with sauce, which she didn't like.Once she got to college, she had problems with the food in her school because it was all covered in sauce.
A survey says that three-quarters of parents of children between the ages of 18 and 28 ask for doctor visits or haircuts for their children, and 11% say they would call their kids' bosses whether their children are having an issue at work.
As reported, wealthy parents try to get their children into top colleges by giving a large amount of money to a school, such as paying for a building. This parenting has become the most popular way to raise children, whatever the income, education,or race is.
Julie,a teacher at Stanford, told The Times that “snowplow parenting” is not a reasonable approach.“The parents should prepare the kid for the road, instead of preparing the road for the kid,” she said.

解析:
56. 考查非谓语动词。step是抽象名词,表示一种计划或打算,并且前面有a first修饰,因此应用不定式作它的后置定语。故填to journey。
57. 考查定语从句。根据句子结构可知,空处所在句子为非限制性定语从句,修饰the man Cao Shengkang。故填who。
58. 考查非谓语动词。根据句子结构可知,International Cooperation与hold在逻辑上为被动关系,因此该空应填hold的过去分词形式。故填held。

参考范文:
Caring for Disabled People Is Our Duty
People with disabilities are around us.They actually need more care and help due to their disabilities. However, there is still prejudice against them nowadays. So it is necessary to care for them.
In my daily life, I always respect them but never make fun of them no matter what happens.Besides, whenever I find people with disabilities in need of help, I never hesitate to give them a hand.
Helping disabled people has made not only them but also me happier.I hope everyone in our society will get rid of discrimination and take action immediately to care for disabled people.Only in this way can we create a harmonious world.

Smith almost messed up a “big time”.He was driving his car and coming back from the dentist with his 5-year-old Justus when they saw a homeless man in the street.Smith said on Facebook that he wanted to give the man some money, but didn't have any cash. His son Justus noticed the man as well. And then it happened.
Unexpectedly, Justus insisted that his father give the man the 30 cents he had in his pocket.Smith said,“It's almost as if he heard my thoughts and responded out loud.”
“I was more than happy he wanted to do this with joy, but honestly I was hesitant.I didn't want to give this man who clearly needed all the help he could get, just 30 cents. My own pride and thoughts of the homeless individual's unknown reaction to receiving just 30 cents was standing in the way,”said Smith.“I quickly realized that I was the only problem in this situation and that the traffic light would turn green at any second.”
Smith recalled that he almost told his son to wait to give until they at least had one dollar. He almost told his son that what he had wasn't enough. He almost showed him that what he saw as a good thing wasn't good enough to make a difference in someone's life.He almost taught Justus that pride was more important than helping another human.
? ?However, the father told himself to get over the strange thought. He remembered that was what he has been teaching Justus. And now that Justus wanted to give everything he had to offer at that moment, he shouldn't let his selfishness ruin a great memory and a good teaching moment.Smith said,“Leading by example is what I have been teaching him, so now let him give what he can to this man.”
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式作答。
So the father quickly denied (否定) that foolish idea.
Then a chain reaction of kindness started.
参考范文:
So the father quickly denied(否定)that foolish idea.He drove the car closer to the man and then rolled down the window. He told the man he didn't have any cash, but his son back there wanted to give him everything he had. After hearing what Smith said, the smile on that man's face lit up the street. The man said to Justus,“Thank you so much!”Justus smiled back. The only thing that matched the brightness of the man's smile was the bigger smile on the boy's face!
Then a chain reaction of kindness started.Behind them, other people, who witnessed the warm scene, rolled down their windows to donate, too.The little boy, Justus, without even realizing it, reminded his father and other adults of kindness by his action.Actually, kindness is always about the heart. It doesn't matter how much or how little you have.Giving love and kindness will often help others. The help is always more than we think.UNIT 2 学业质量检测

During Pasteur's time, people believed that bacteria (细菌) appeared due to “spontaneous generation” (自然发生).They thought that the bacteria just appeared out of nowhere.Pasteur carried out experiments to see if this was true.Through his experiments he proved that bacteria were living things that came from other living things. They didn't just spontaneously appear. This was a major discovery in the study of biology and earned Pasteur the title of Father of Microbiology.
As Pasteur learnt more about bacteria,he began to think they may be the cause of diseases in humans. When the French silk market was threatened by a disease to silkworms (蚕),Pasteur decided to investigate. He discovered that this disease was caused by bacteria.By killing them from the silkworm farms, he was able to cease the disease and save the French silk business.

Patagonia,a high-end outdoor retailer, saw an astonishing $10 million in Black Friday sales—five times its own expectations—and, as promised, will donate every cent toward helping save the environment.
According to the company's website, the“fundraiser for the earth”was a huge success. The best part?Every cent is being donated to grassroots nonprofits working to protect the planet's air, water and soil for future generations.
“We're just really grateful to our customers for coming out.The enormous love our customers showed to the planet on Black Friday enables us to give every penny to hundreds of grassroots environmental organizations working around the world, many of which are small, underfunded,”said company spokeswoman Corley Kenna. She explained that Patagonia was looking for a way to show just how important the environment and climate change are.
“We felt that these were issues that united us and I think this is a demonstration that people agree. Our customers agree,”said Kenna.“The science is telling us loud and clear:We have a problem.By getting active in communities, we can raise our voices to defend policies and regulations that will protect wild places and wildlife, reduce carbon emissions, build a modern energy economy based on investment in renewables, and, most importantly, ensure the United States remains fully committed to the vital goals set forth in the Paris Agreement on climate change.”

“There is nothing noble(高尚的)in being superior(优秀的)to your fellow man;true nobility is being superior to your former self.”——Ernest Hemingway
As Hemingway says, self-improvement is a noble cause. 36. Much of who we are is determined by how we relate with others around us.When we seek to improve ourselves, we can also make our relationships with others better.
37. If you have a good self-image, then others are likely to relate to you in a positive way. When people see a self-controlled and confident individual, they are likely to be affected in a positive way.And this can result in a more optimistic and constructive relationship.
Only when you have accepted who you are can you grow.If you continuously fight against yourself, you won't have the emotional energy you need to better yourself. If you wish to get on with people better, then you may start by accepting yourself. 38.
If you are on a personal path that is going upwards, then you are likely to find a friend or partner who is also seeking to better themselves and their circumstances. 39.
Focusing on your good qualities and attempting to protect and improve these characteristics will help you become a better person. 40. When you stop damaging who you are, you are likely to avoid ruining relationships and this can lead to longer and more meaningful connections with others.
A.Like-minded people attract one another.
