U2 Do as the Romans do
We often say, “When in Rome, do as the Romans do.” So when you eat (west)food, do as (Western)do. Here (be)some things that you may need (know)about (eat)together (介词)the West.
In some Western (country), lunch is usually (eat) (介词)about 1 pm. Dinner (serve)around 7 pm or even (late). In Spain it is usual (have)lunch at 3 pm and dinner at 10 pm!
(介词)the (start)of a meal, the (France)say “Bon appétit”, and the (Italian)say “Buon appetito”. But there (be)nothing similar (介词)say in English. “ (enjoy)your meal” is usually only (say)by the person who (bring)the food.
(knife)and forks are used (介词)most Western food. The fork
is (hold)in your left hand and the knife (介词)your right, and the food (hold)with the fork and (cut)with the knife. Soup (eat)with a spoon. However, there is some food which you can eat (介词)your (finger), such as chicken wings and (hamburger).
During the meal, you may (invite) (serve)yourself (usually the ladies before the (gentleman)) by someone who says , “Help (you).” (连词)you will be served by someone who asks, “ (will)you like some… ” You can take it and say, “Thank you.” If you (give)something you do not like, you can just say, (介词)example, “I’m sorry. I don’t eat meat”, or “I don’t eat fish”. No one will be cross. If you (offer)more food (连词)cannot eat any more, just say, “No, thanks. It was delicious, but I (have)enough.”
Remember that it is polite (say)that you enjoy every dish when it is served, and that you have enjoyed the food (介词)the end of a meal.
It is sometimes difficult (know)when the meal (be)over. If you are invited to dinner (介词)Western friends, you will be expected (介词)stay and talk around the dinner table long after the last dish is served, and it is not polite if you leave as soon (介词)you finish (eat).
The rule is: Watch the other people. Do as they do.
M7U2 Who owns English
1 English (speak)by about 400 million people, (most)in the US, the UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. In Ghana, India and Singapore, English (use)as a (work)language, for example, between (boss)and secretaries, and between doctors and (patient), although there are other languages for everyday use. In China and many other (country), English is
the (important)foreign language that children learn at school, because when they grow up, it will be quite possible for them (meet)people from other countries. They will need a common language (communicate)with each other. English is now used by ( near)a quarter of the (world)population, and anywhere you go (介词)the world, there is a good chance that you will meet someone who (speak)English.
2 The reason why English (speak)everywhere is that in the nineteenth century, English (become)the language of world trade. And in the (twenty)century, the US spread English (介词)the world (介词) newspapers, television and films. It is now the common language for (internation)travel, science, industry, and (recent), information technology and (冠词)Internet.
It is also important ( know)that English (borrow)many words from other languages, for example, “restaurant” from French, “zero” from Arabic, “piano” from Italian, and “tofu” (介词 )Chinese
4 Will the ( important)of English last (连词)China (continue)to grow, many people think that Chinese will become as common (介词)English (介词) the middle of (21世纪). More and more schools (介词) Europe are (teach)Chinese (介词) a foreign language, together (介词) some European (language). However, most people still think that English will (use)most around the world, at (little)for the next twenty or thirty (year)
So who (own)English The answer is everyone who (speak) it - the British, the ( Indian)and the Chinese all help make (代词)a rich language. Even though we speak different (type)of English, we are all part of (冠词)international club. We all own English.
