1840’s Original KAZOO
What is a kazoo Kazoo is a very special wind instrument which hums through the human voice and enhances the sound,
similar to the saxophone. Playing Kazoo doesn’t need to learn music theory, recite music scores, or even practice. Kazoo
may sound like a saxophone and trumpet. It is often played when a guest is welcomed.
Kazoo History The Kazoo roots date back to Africa where they were originally used for sacred ceremonies, although
the exact purpose is still a mystery to all. Later, the Kazoo was used to drive away enemies, not as a musical instrument.
How to play Kazoo has a simple structure. The flute is big at one end and small at the other. When playing, you should
hold the big head in your mouth without blowing, but hum a tune with your throat. The vibration of the vocal cord drives
the vibration of the sound film on the flute to make a sound. For beginners, “doo-doo” is a perfect attempt.
Remember DON’T BLOW-HUM.
Maintenance It is recommended to keep your Kazoo clean and dry. Excessive saliva does not do the tin much good.
Also food intake must be considered. Beer, garlic, chilli have a strange effect on the sound, but don’t be anxious. Some
people even prefer these effects. From time to time the membrane may need replacing through excessive wear or
dampness. When removing the old one, you shouldn’t use any mechanical tools or it would harm its further use. As for
substitution, it is a piece of cake as you just need to cut a piece of waxed paper the size of the hole and screw back the
cap.
1. What can we infer about the Kazoo
A. It shares a similar working principle with trumpet.
B. Professional training for the Kazoo is not necessarily required.
C. The Africans introduced it to the musical field.
D. Replacing the membrane frequently can improve its life.
2. Which of the following is suggested for Kazoo players according to the passage
1

A. Blow a tune with your throat.
B. Have garlic before your performance.
C. Store it in a basement.
D. Avoid using scissors to remove the old membrane.
3. What is the main purpose of the passage

Alicia Quarles has her hands full these days — both of them, at all hours of the day and night.
“Having a baby unexpectedly at 41 is one thing; having twins is a whole other beast, ” says the global entertainment
editor.
Actually, until her pregnancy Quarles had been living at breakneck speed. It went so until last year. “I was exhausted,”
she says. “I’d been working three jobs, doing my charity and going nonstop. I was afraid my mental health was getting
worse.” In early August she took herself to the hospital, to see if she was OK. Doctors ran multiple tests and told her
that she had had an anxiety attack, and she was 11 weeks pregnant.
“She was stressed and decompensated, so everything just came to more than she could handle at the time,” explains
doctor Miriam Barnes, who began treating her. “Fortunately, she tried to be positive and seek help from me immediately.
I told her not to have any medication at that stage and advised her to take natural therapy.”
A week later Quarles learned that she was having twins. But instead of that news adding to her anxiety, “a total peace
came over me, and it felt like it all made sense,” she says. Quarles, who did not take any medication, returned home to
her loved ones in North Carolina, where she gave birth to Hudson and Harlow on Feb. 16. “There’s nothing like family,”
she says. “I found out through working on myself in natural therapy that there were a lot of things I hadn’t dealt with. I
just kept going.”
These days Quarles uses social media to document her joyful motherhood journey. Quarles has put her anxiety behind
but remains in therapy — and wants to encourage others who feel stressed to get help. “At first I felt guilty and
embarrassed,” she admits. “I don’t anymore. My message is you can fall down. But you can stand up, by yourself or
with the help of others. It’s not a shame, and it’s a blessing.”

Virtual reality is already widespread in entertainment and is starting to spread to fields
ranging from education to health care. But while vision and hearing interfaces are extremely
advanced, and touch is improving, one key sense has been missing from the virtual world:
smell.
That may be about to change. Engineer Xinge Yu of the City University of Hong Kong and
his colleagues have developed a lightweight, flexible and wireless olfactory interface that
can precisely deliver smells such as lavender, pineapple or green tea to VR users and more
fully involve them in virtual worlds with pleasant smell."Bringing smell into VR expands it
into another dimension,"Yu says."We wanted to develop something in a wearable,skin-
integrated format that people can go anywhere with and use anytime."
The team's design was described in a paper published on Tuesday in Nature Communications. A key advantage is that it
can control smell intensity. One demonstration in the study involved in-creasing the intensity of the smell generated as
a woman in a four-dimensional movie brought arose up to her nose.
The study includes demonstrations of possible applications beyond just increasing VR, including communicating
messages by smell and evoking( 引起)emotions. The researchers suggest the devices could even be used to lessen
depressed mood or promote recall in people with age-related cognitive decline."The pleasant smell is directly connected
to the emotional and memory parts of the brain, so there are a lot of applications related to well-being and health," a
researcher says.
The researchers have already started shrinking things down further. They have a system that's two to three times smaller
now, and they aim to shrink it to something five to 10 times smaller in the future."That's the next step,"Yu says.
8.Which sense develops slowly in the virtual world
A.Hearing. B. Feeling. C.Sight. D. Smell.
3
{#{QQABCYaUoggAABJAAQgCUwESCAKQkBGCACoGQAAAoAABgQNABAA=}#}
9.What is the main strength of the new design
It is light in weight.
It is flexible and wireless.
It is easy to wear.
It can command the smell concentration.
10.What's the main idea of paragraph 4
A.To show the definition of the virtual world.
B. To describe the key content of the new research.
C.To introduce the potential uses of new technology.
D.To explain the main function of the application.
11.What will the researchers do about the device next
A. To reduce its size.
B. To change its shape.
C. To strengthen its flexibility.
D. To decrease its weight.

Cornell University researchers have found people have more efficient conversations, use more positive language and
perceive each other more positively when using an artificial intelligence-enabled chat tool. However, apart from that,
the group also found that when participants think their partner is using more AI-suggested responses, they perceive that
partner as less cooperative, and feel less connection with them.
“Technology companies tend to emphasize the use of AI tools to accomplish tasks faster and better, but they ignore the
social dimension,” said Malte Jung, associate professor of information science. “We do not live and work alone, and the
systems we use impact our interactions with others.”
In an experiment, researchers developed a smart-reply platform the group called “Moshi”, patterned after the no longer
existing Google “Allo”, the first smart-reply platform, released in 2016. Smart replies are generated from LLMs (large
language models) to predict reasonable next responses in chat-based interactions.
Participants were asked to talk about a policy issue and assigned to one of three conditions: both participants can use
smart replies; only one participant can use smart replies; or neither participant can use smart replies.
Researchers found that using smart replies increased communication efficiency, positive emotional language and
positive evaluations by communication partners. On average, smart replies accounted for 14.3% of sent messages. But
participants who their partners suspected of responding with smart replies were evaluated more negatively than those
who were thought to have typed their own responses, consistent with people’s common assumptions.
“While AI might be able to help you write,” Hohenstein, lead author and postdoctoral researcher, said, “it’s altering your
language in ways you might not expect, especially by making you sound more positive. This suggests that by using text-
generating AI, you’re sacrificing some of your own personal voice.”
12. How do people probably view a man using AI-suggested responses
4
{#{QQABCYaUoggAABJAAQgCUwESCAKQkBGCACoGQAAAoAABgQNABAA=}#}
A. He has strong opinions.
B. He lacks cooperativeness.
C. He is incapable of working on his own.
D. He is efficient in positive communication.
13. What did the subjects do in the experiment
A. They explained how they used the platform.
B. They predicted possible responses from AI.
C. They evaluated replies made by their partners.
D. They paired AI-generated questions and answers.
14. What does Hohenstein think of AI-aided writing
A. It helps highlight your personal style.
B. It increases your productivity.
C. It changes the tone of your writing.
D. It polishes your writing as you wish.
15. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. The advance in AI-based chat tool
B. The significance of AI in social context
C. The efficiency of AI-involved conversation
D. The effect of AI on interpersonal perception

It was the day of the big cross-country run. Students from seven different primary schools in and around the small town
were warming up and walking the route through thick evergreen forest.
I looked around and finally spotted David, who was standing by himself off to the side by a fence. He was small for ten
years old. His usual big toothy smile was absent today. I walked over and asked him why he wasn’t with the other
children. He hesitated and then said he had decided not to run.
What was wrong He had worked so hard for this event!

{#{QQABCYaUoggAABJAAQgCUwESCAKQkBGCACoGQAAAoAABgQNABAA=}#}
I quickly searched the crowd for the school’s coach and asked him what had happened. “I was afraid that kids from
other schools would laugh at him,” he explained uncomfortably. “I gave him the choice to run or not, and let him decide.”
I bit back my frustration. I knew the coach meant well—he thought he was doing the right thing. After making sure that
David could run if he wanted, I turned to find him coming towards me, his small body rocking from side to side as he
swung his feet forward.
David had a brain disease which prevented him from walking or running like other children, but at school his classmates
thought of him as a regular kid. He always participated to the best of his ability in whatever they were doing. That was
why none of the children thought it unusual that David had decided to join the cross-country team. It just took him
longer—that’s all. David had not missed a single practice, and although he always finished his run long after the other
children, he did always finish. As a special education teacher at the school, I was familiar with the challenges David
faced and was proud of his strong determination.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为 150 左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答.
We sat down next to each other, but David wouldn’t look at me.
