Inventor, physicist, surveyor, astronomer, biologist, artist...Robert Hooke was all these and more. Some say he was the most extraordinary experimental scientist of the 17th century. In the course of his work, he cooperated with famous men of science like Isaac Newton, and the great architect Christopher Wren.
Hooke's early education began at home, under the guidance of his father. He entered the Westminster School at the age of 13, and from there went to Oxford, where he came into contact with some of the best scientists in England. Hooke impressed them with his skill at designing experiments and inventing instruments. In 1662, at the age of 28, he was named Curator of Experiments at the newly formed Royal Society of London—meaning that he was responsible for demonstrating (展示) new experiments at the society's weekly meeting. Hooke accepted the job, even though he knew that the society had no money to pay him!
Watching living things through a microscope was one of his favourite pastimes. He invented a compound microscope for this purpose. One day while observing a cork (软木塞) under a microscope, he saw honeycomb-like structures. They were cells—the smallest unit of life. In fact, it was Hooke who invented the term “cell” as the box-like cells of the cork reminded him of the cells of a monastery (修道院).
Another achievement of Hooke is his book Micrographia, which introduces the enormous potential of the microscope. It contains fascinating drawings of the things he saw under the microscope. The book also includes, among other things, ideas of gravity, light and combustion (燃烧) that may have helped scientists like Newton when they were developing their own theoretical frameworks of these phenomena.
Hooke made a valuable contribution to astronomy too. A crater on the moon is named after him in honour of his service to this branch of science.
4.Why did Hooke accept the job as Curator of Experiments
A.He liked designing experiments.
B.His family needed his support.
C.His parents couldn't afford his education.
D.He wanted to please some famous scientists.
5.What does the underlined word “pastimes” in Paragraph 3 mean

While most musicians work with other artists when creating their music, Holly Herndon, an American musician and sound artist who is now based in Berlin, takes a different way, working with the machine learning software called Spawn. The software uses artificial neural networks modeled after the structure of the human brain. These networks learn patterns from datasets during the training process. Based on the data, the networks create new material that includes Herndon's own voice.
When producing her album, PROTO, Holly trained datasets to write new music. The process requires the input data of music written by people or by artificial intelligence (AI). The neural networks then produce variations of that music. “Computers surprise you in a way that an instrument doesn't,” Holly said. So what does music sound like when composed by what is essentially a robot It sounds like music from the future!
But Holly Herndon isn't the only one exploring AI in composition. Machines have played an increasingly important role in music over the last century. The godfather of computer science, Alan Turing, developed the first computer that generated music in 1951. Then in 1980, David Cope from the University of California, Santa Cruz developed EMI—Experiments in Musical Intelligence, a system that analyzes existing music and produces new pieces based on it.
AI might not take over the job of the “pop star” anytime soon, or will it Miquela Sousa is a computer-generated artist with over one million followers on Instagram. “I'm a model and singer. And I'm a robot,” Miquela said. This then raises the question:Can we reproduce creativity using a computer
Though those questions are not easy to answer, I believe the next frontier of music lies somewhere in between. I can see the path forward with a new dawn of creativity that combines human inventiveness with AI. And the next chapter of music will certainly become wonderful as music and AI become even more closely connected.
8.What plays an important role in producing PROTO
A.Holly's special voice.
B.The input of existing music.
C.Holly's rich knowledge.
D.The use of an instrument.
9.Why does the author mention the example of Miquela Sousa
A.To promote deep thinking on AI musicians.
B.To show the popularity of smart robots.
C.To explain the tasks of computer-generated artists.
D.To make comparisons between human and robotic artists.
10.What is the author's attitude towards music co-created by AI and humans
A.Doubtful. B.Surprised.
C.Confident. D.Confused.
11.What does the text mainly talk about
A.The increasing diversity of AI music.
B.The development of musical composition.
C.The history of computer-generated music.
D.The combination of AI and musical composition.

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
In 1989, fresh from high school, I had the difficult task of choosing a career path before the college started in three months. In those days in Pakistan, there were limited choices: becoming a doctor or an engineer, or entering the financial world after getting a business degree. I wasn't interested in engineering, so I was left with medicine and business. I couldn't decide.
My uncle suggested that I do a work placement(实习工作) to experience it for a month in an international company followed by a month in a hospital. After that, I could make a decision. It seemed like a good idea.
I was accepted for a month's placement at a foreign bank in Karachi. I knew how the world of finance functioned, made new friends, and generally enjoyed the work surroundings.
The month passed rapidly, and soon I began working at a leading hospital in Karachi. The experience couldn't have been more different. The hospital had a stressful environment. The days started early (at 7 a.m., compared to 9 a.m. at the bank), and were filled with endless duties and the night calls! This was crazy, working all day, through the night, and again the next day.
I began thinking about my two experiences. The bank had offered a more relaxed atmosphere, better working hours and less stress. The hospital was full of excitement, but the study and training were difficult. It seemed that the business choice was going to win out.
Near the end of my month at the hospital, I was driving home after an especially busy night call. In front of me was a public bus, with college students sitting on the top. As the driver weaved through traffic, I could see the boys shaking from side to side.
注意:续写词数应为150左右。
Paragraph 1:
Suddenly,a boy fell from the bus.
Paragraph 2:
The next day, when I went to the hospital to see the boy,all his family got up,with grateful smiles on their faces.

One possible version:
Paragraph 1:
Suddenly,a boy fell from the bus. He hit the road with his face down and rolled over. He lay still in the middle of the road while the bus sped away. None of the cars behind stopped. Thinking that he could die in a matter of minutes, I stopped my car and carefully examined the boy. With the help of some passers-by, I lifted the unconscious boy into the car and raced back to the hospital. After his family were contacted, and he was wheeled into the emergency surgery, I drove home, exhausted but happy.
Paragraph 2:
The next day, when I went to the hospital to see the boy,all his family got up,with grateful smiles on their faces. What a feeling it was to help save the life of another person! I spent the rest of the day in a state of the most fabulous mood I had ever experienced. Driving home that evening, I decided on my career path. Two months of placements could not do what 30 minutes' helping an accident victim had done for me. This experience taught me that at times, the decisions are made for you—and that whatever happens is always for the best.
