The health of millions could be at risk because supplies of medicinal plants are being used up. These plants are used to make traditional medicine, including drugs to fight cancer. “The loss of medicinal plants is a quiet disaster,” says Sara Oldfield, secretary general of the Botanic Gardens Conservation International.
Most people worldwide rely on herbal (药草的) medicines which are got mostly from wild plants. But some 15,000 of the 50,000 medicinal species are under threat of dying out, according to a report from the international conservation group Plantlife. Shortages have been reported in China, India, Kenya, Nepal, Tanzania and Uganda.
Over harvesting does the most harm, though pollution and competition from invasive species (入侵物种) and habitat destruction all contribute. “Businessmen generally harvest medicinal plants, not caring about sustainability (可持续性),” the Plantlife report says. “Damage is serious partly because they have no idea about it, but it is mainly because such collection is unorganized.” Medicinal trees at risk include the Himalayan yew and the African cherry, which are used to treat some cancers.
The solution, says the report’s author, Alan Hamilton, is to encourage local people to protect these plants. Ten projects ran by Plantlife in India, Pakistan, China, Nepal, Uganda and Kenya showed this method can succeed. In Uganda, the project has kept a sustainable supply of low cost cancer treatments, and in China a public run medicinal plant project has been created for the first time.
“Improving health, earning an income and keeping cultural traditions are important in encouraging people to protect medicinal plants,” says Hamilton. “You have to pay attention to what people are interested in.”
Ghillean Prance, the former director of the Royal Botanic Gardens in London, insists that medicinal plants are in need of protection. “Not nearly enough is being done. We are destroying the very plants that are of most use to us.”

Plants are intelligent. It sounds like a fable. However, science is beginning to think so. In 2013, The New Yorker published an article that set the plant science world on fire, forever changing the way both the public and researchers looking at and studying the plant kingdom. The “Intelligent Plant” was previously unheard of. 1 But fast forward to 2022, there are now dozens of research papers and hours of video prepared and published by plant biologists discussing so many facts of plant intelligence. 2
Communication:A lot of evidence suggests that plants, trees in particular, can communicate with one another. 3 It is in some ways similar to the Internet we use. The idea of plants forming such a relationship to interact is considered as an evolutionary outcome.
Learning: 4 What if plants can learn from experiences like the dogs The scientists designed experiments, whose goal was to prove whether plants could learn, an idea that seemed impossible. Ultimately, they succeeded in not only their experiments, but also in proving that plants can actually learn.
Memory:As research and experiments continue into the plant memory, people can’t help but ask the question “how can something without a brain have memories ” Studies have determined that plants can indeed learn and create memories. 5
Figuring out the “plant brain” question is the logical next step. As more research comes in, it seems that plant intelligence is a very real possibility.
A.Can plants be taught
B.The plant biology community launched a campaign.
C.This communication occurs through underground networks.
D.It makes no sense to research plant communication methods.
E.They can display their memory recall through learned response.
F.The following behavioral characteristics are from the experiments.
G.Therefore, the plant biology community claimed it was completely baseless.

Isabel sat carefully inserting papers into a folder. She had been at the Gateway Nature Center’s office all morning and was weary of filing. She wanted desperately to work with the animals, especially the birds in the center. But her mom, who was the assistant director of the center, said Isabel was too young.
“I’ve been a weekend volunteer this whole school year. I know more about birds than almost anyone else here,” she said to herself, recalling the extensive research she had done reading books and visiting websites on natural history. Then she sighed. She had never been good at speaking up for herself.
Suddenly, the quiet was shattered by Amy Jensen bursting in and letting the door slam. Isabel felt herself shrink. Amy, who had been a volunteer a bit longer than Isabel, walked around as if she were in charge of the place. “Hey, Isabel,” she barked, planting a hand on Isabel’s shoulder. Isabel willed herself to remain still, though she would have loved to brush Amy’s hand off.
Just then, Isabel’s mother rushed into the room with Mr. Garza, the custodian (管理员). “The hurricane is entering the Gulf,” she reported. “The Gulf Shore Preserve needs help to prepare for the storm. I’ve got to go down there. You should be okay up here, but I need you girls to help Mr. Garza get the storm shutters down in the aviary (鸟舍). Stay inside with Mr. Garza after that.” Isabel leaped to her feet, excited to have an opportunity to help the birds.
Mr. Garza and the girls worked quickly and were soon back inside, listening to the wind batter and rattle the shutters. When Mr. Garza found an emergency weather report on the computer, a concerned expression crossed his face. “A storm is heading our way,” he announced. Amy’s eyes widened in horror.

根据画线词的上下文“‘Businessmen generally harvest medicinal plants, not caring about sustainability (可持续性),’ the Plantlife report says. ‘Damage is serious partly because they have no idea about it, but it is mainly because such collection is unorganized.’ (Plantlife报告说:‘商人通常收获药用植物,不关心可持续性。损害之所以严重,部分原因是他们不知道这一点,但主要是因为这种收集是无组织的。’)”可知,it指代前文中的“sustainability”,指商人们不知道什么是可持续性。故选B。
3.A 推理判断题。根据最后一段中的“Not nearly enough is being done. We are destroying the very plants that are of most use to us.” 故选A项。
