When I was young, strong heroes in my favorite novels gave me courage and provided a map for my life. And I didn’t discover the power of poetry until I was in my twenties and making my way in New York. That’s when life got serious and broke my heart.
A teacher who later became a dear friend of mine introduced me to Edna St. Vincent Millay, the famous poet who lived in Manhattan at the turn of the 20th century. One of my favorite possessions is a valuable first edition copy of Millay’s short poetry collection. A Few Figs from Thistles was a gift from this friend who was old enough to be my mother at the time. She told me the first “fig” described how I was living my life: “My candle burns at both ends; It will not last the night; But ah, my foes(敌人), and oh,my friends—It gives a lovely night!”
I was struggling to make ends meet but always made the time for fun by hanging out with friends. Some of them of course were careless of my heart but I could always find comfort and courage in Millay’s wise words.
Rather than bore my friends, I could fall into my sorrow whenever it hit me—cried as much as I wanted in my bedroom. I found everything I needed in those 32 pages—hope, wisdom and encouragement. In the years since, I’ve found myself attracted to poetry whenever someone caused me pain.
Is it actually possible for something as common as a poem to save a life I’m not certain of that but I can prove the power of words. Like a relaxing walk outside, poetry can provide a healthy distraction and a meaningful change in perspective.
Like music, poetry speaks a universal language of rhythm, and speaks the truth in a language that describes emotions. So why not keep interested in poems

Poetry can be a source of distraction, of beauty, of truth. It can guide us when it gets difficult to manage the intensity of what we’re feeling. So it’s no surprise that people seek out poetry for comfort.
Overall visits from readers to a poetry website went up by thirty percent recently. “So many people have reached out wanting to discuss how much more poetry has meant to them this year, or how suddenly poetry has meant something to them,” says award winning poet Naomi Shihab Nye, a teacher. All year, she says people have been asking her for advice on what poems to read or what poetry platforms to choose.
This year saw an extraordinary economic trauma that we had all been experiencing. And poetry is an art form that has always been a resource in times of crisis. “A lot of people, especially in healthcare, haven’t known where to put their sorrow because there’s been too much and there’s been no time to navigate it,” she says.
Suzanne Olhmann, a nurse, who says she talks about poetry with her patients almost every day, shares the poem Kindness by Naomi with them, as well as with other healthcare workers. “Naomi’s poem really helps us understand that you can think of sorrow as a two sided coin and on the other side of it is kindness,” she says.
Poet James Crews says that one reason why poetry has provided comfort this year is that it’s a powerful medium for working through change. “A lot of poems are read during funerals, weddings, graduations, and huge transitions in our lives,” he says. “And I feel that we’re all turning to poetry as a way of capturing and naming this huge transition that we’re all going through together right now. We need poems to remind us why the world is worth saving and also how we can take better care of ourselves.”
That is how poetry gives us hope each and every day. Poems will be here for us, holding space for relief and escape.
8.What can we infer from what Naomi said
A.Poems need to be discussed and analyzed.
B.More people are interested in poetry today.
C.People don’t understand the meaning of poems.
D.Too many people ask for advice on writing poems.

B.An unexpected result.
C.An impossible change.
D.An insignificant challenge.
10.Why does the author give the example of Suzanne Olhmann
A.To show the kindness of the nurse.
B.To prove the comforting role of poems.
C.To show the current popularity of poetry.
D.To prove the good relationship between nurses and patients.
11.What does Crews think of poetry
A.It saves our joy in a broken world.
B.It reminds us to take care of the earth.
C.It describes the dark times of our life.
D.It helps us go through the changes in life.
D
Poetry is one of mankind’s oldest art forms. Since first analyzed by Aristotle, poetry has been part of every major art movement, and some say it captures emotions better than any other forms. Reading poetry is necessary to gain a full understanding of the world and has many additional benefits.
The immediate benefits of reading poetry are improvements on vocabulary. Poetry makes the reader familiar with new terms and encourages verbal analysis. This presents reading as a creative act in its own right. The common practice of memorizing poems also improves long term brain health. Studies have shown that people who memorize and recall poems are less susceptible(易受影响的) to Alzheimer’s.
Poetry also improves critical thinking by forcing a reader to think. In great poetry, meaning is not obvious or one dimensional. Understanding poetry is an active practice, rather than the passive engagement with prose(散文). Readers of poetry are more likely than non readers to analyze information for viewpoints. This skill benefits students, and anyone who wants to form their own opinions of news items or gain a better perspective on documents like contracts. The critical thinking skills developed through reading poetry give language itself greater control.
The most remarkable power of literature is its ability to unite readers and writers across time and cultural boundaries. As condensed(浓缩的) literature, poetry offers these benefits in a powerful way. Poetry triggers memories and emotions in its readers. This connection between universal emotions and personal experience encourages the development of empathy(共鸣). A reader might have no practical conception of what life was like during the Elizabethan era in England. However, Shakespeare’s sonnets with their universal themes of love and longing, can bridge the gap of centuries and help us gain an insight into people’s feelings in the 17th century.
12.Which of the following shows the benefit memorizing poetry brings to the brain
A.It makes one act more creatively.
B.It improves people’s long term memories.
C.It improves one’s ability to analyse issues.
D.It makes one less likely to catch Alzheimer’s.
13.In what way does poetry improve critical thinking
A.Readers can have good control over language.
B.Readers can analyze information to form viewpoints.
C.Readers can understand the obvious meaning of poetry.
D.Readers can gain a better perspective on documents.
14.Why does the author mention Shakespeare’s sonnets
A.To show poetry helps develop empathy.
B.To show the universal themes of poetry.
C.To show Shakespeare’s understanding of life.
D.To show poetry motivates us to learn different cultures.
15.What is the purpose of the text
A.To ask us to read poems.
B.To show how to appreciate poems.
C.To explain the benefits of reading poetry.
D.To tell the importance of poetry in history.

Poetry Writing Tips for Beginners
Poetry is one of the oldest and most respected literary forms. It takes a certain style and skill with words to create a good work of poetry. Here are some easy to follow tips on writing poetry:
 16
Before you start the writing process, you should make sure that you read as many great poems as possible. Take a glance at the works of Neruda, Keats, Whitman, and Dickinson, to name but a few of the greats. This does not mean that you should copy their works of course. 17 .
Choose a specific theme
Like any other type of literary work, your poem will need a specific theme. You can’t write a poem effectively if you don’t have a set theme. A theme will give your work both focus and a set goal. 18 . It could be about loss, love, hate, greed, etc. Your theme could also be about a very specific event in your life, such as your first love or a broken relationship.
Read it aloud
During the writing process, it is important that you check how your poem sounds. 19 . However, it may sound awkward or lacking once you read it aloud. So take the time to read your work aloud. Read it aloud after each stanza(诗节). If you want to be more thorough, you could read it aloud to family and friends.
Polish it up
After you have your poem critiqued(评论), now is the time to polish it up. Take their advice and make any changes to the wordplay or word usage. If you see any clunky wordplay in your work, try to smooth it out. Remember that poetry should have a flow, an almost lyrical feel.
20 . However, once you put these poetry tips for beginners into practice, you’ll be able to create quality poetry in no time.
A.Free your mind
B.Read great poems
C.It may seem perfect when you’re reading it
D.Your theme can be practically anything under the sun
E.Learning how to write poetry can be slow going at first
F.It is still a very satisfying feeling to create great works of poetry
G.Think of them as references that will expand your horizons as a poet

It was the day of the poetry festival, and I was 36 (excite). At my old school, I had won the poetry ribbon every year. I did write good poetry. When Mrs. Baker called me, I stood up. I didn’t even bother to look at my paper. I’d spent so much time 37 (perfect) the rhymes, and counting the 38 (beat) that I knew the poem by heart. I had just started the third verse when I noticed Mrs. Baker was glaring at me. “Linda, you 39 (suppose) to be reading an original work, a poem you made yourself, not reciting something you learned.” I opened my mouth to explain, but no words came out. “You will leave the room and will not return until you are ready 40 (apologize),” said Mrs. Baker. “Now, go!” I turned and left the room. I’d been standing outside for about half an hour when Joseph, another school teacher, came over to ask me why. As Joseph waited 41 me to answer, he looked so kind and sympathetic 42 I poured out the whole story, trying not to cry. “Linda, accepting defeat when you should stand up for 43 (you) can become a very dangerous habit. You know you are the only Linda Brown in 44 whole world.” His eyes smiling into mine, I took a deep breath and 45 (knock) on the classroom door, ready to face Mrs. Baker—recite my poem.

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
As a sixth grader, I began noticing how other kids were separating into different groups in the class. There were the geeks, the jokers(爱开玩笑的人), and the popular cool kids. I wasn’t sure where I belonged. And I thought that was a problem.
Our teacher had assigned “secret friends” for the coming week. The purpose of this assignment was to do nice things for your friends without letting them know who was doing it. We could leave encouraging notes on their desk or mysteriously leave a card in their backpack or book. Our teacher wrote each kid’s name on a piece of paper and threw them into a bucket, and then we each closed our eyes and drew the name of the classmate who we were to secretly befriend and support over the next five school days.
Everyone was excited to get involved, including Rochelle. By the middle of the week, we had turned this assignment into a contest to see whose secret friend could leave the best gift. Instead of encouraging notes, we left stationary sets on our friends’ desk. Instead of giving compliments, we were giving bubble gum, lollipops and even money. It seemed that everyone was getting cool presents from their friends. Everyone except me, that is.
My secret friend followed our teacher’s directions without a fault. I received handmade cards, notes with nice thoughts and countless smiley face pictures saying that I was one of the nicest girls in the class. This friend seemed to think highly of me from the notes that were left, but the lack of gifts kept me wondering what’s up with whoever had pulled my name.
On the last morning of our assignment, I walked into my classroom and noticed a package on my desk. At last, my secret friend had grasped the idea that a gift was what I really needed. I quickly ripped the gift paper open, only to find a small doll inside. The pink wool knit doll seemed not new but delicate. But the girls sitting near me giggled and gossiped about the “little girl” gift I had received.
注意:续写词数应为150左右。
Paragraph 1:
Hearing this, I felt my face turn red.
Paragraph 2:
It turned out that my secret friend was Rochelle, coming from a poor family.

Hearing this, I felt my face turn red. Embarrassed and ashamed, I secretly complained that the girl gave me a so stupid gift. I even joined other girls in gossiping about my secret friend and the poor doll. When I continued with mean remarks, a girl sitting at the last row arose and came up, casting me an angry and disappointed look. With tears streaming down her face, she admitted, “I’m your secret friend and I’m sorry about the gift.” Then she ran out of the classroom. Frozen with shock, I couldn’t say a single word.
sParagraph 2:
It turned out that my secret friend was Rochelle, coming from a poor family. She had saved every penny in her pocket money in order to give me a cool gift. With the limited money, she visited a lot of stores and finally selected the lovely doll from a second hand store. Actually, she gave me a most valuable gift with her sincere heart. However, I hurt her badly in such a cruel way. So ashamed was I that it took me a few days to pluck up my courage to face Rochelle and apologize. Much to my delight, she forgave me and later we became best friends.
