It’s said that every Irish “mammy” has her own way to cook Irish stew(炖菜). Simple but satisfying, it has fed the poor over centuries, which makes it a national dish.
The ingredients tell the story. First up, there’s the “spud”, as the Irish call the potato. First brought to Ireland in the 16th century, it was an unbelievable food, providing bumper crops that could be stored over the cold winter months. Soon, everyone was eating it—for breakfast, lunch and tea.
With the arrival of the spud, the population increased from one million to eight million in less than three centuries. But this dependence on the vegetable would prove disastrous when crops were struck by disease in the 1840s. The great famine(饥荒) that followed killed over a million people—and forced millions more to run to other countries. It’s hard to believe that during the years of famine, Ireland continued to export huge quantities of food to Great Britain, its colonial master at the time.
Today, Ireland is an independent nation. Nobody thinks of the potato famine as they enjoy their Irish stew but there’s a bone deep awareness of the country’s strong connection with the spud.
Potatoes are all well and good, but the stew gets its taste from the meat. It used to be made with mutton as it was the only meat available to the poor. However, the only way to make it good enough to eat was to stew it in the pot for hours.
Today, most people use lamb. However, this remains slightly traditional among purists, who also criticize(批评) the addition of ingredients like carrots, parsnips, thyme and other materials bought from a supermarket.
4.Why was the potato called an unbelievable food in the 16th century

McDonald’s food holds plenty of secrets, and Chicken McNuggets(麦乐鸡块) are no exception. The boxed, bite size pieces of chicken are one of the fast food producer’s most popular menu items. But there’s something even the most devoted chicken nugget(鸡块) consumers may not know: every nugget that comes out of McDonald’s is guaranteed to be one of four different shapes.
Don’t worry though, it’s not some strange chicken plot. It’s the result of a carefully planned process that occurs in McDonald’s factories. A Business Insider video, using continuous shooting mode from a McDonald’s factory in Canada, offers an inside look into chicken nugget production. Before it goes to the fryer, the ground chicken breast meat that will become Chicken McNuggets goes through a “rolling cookie cutter” machine. The cutter ensures that the nuggets to be are all in the same width and one of four shapes. The shapes are the “boot,” the “bell,” the “ball,” and the “bone” (or “bow tie”).
But just how different are the four shapes How do you tell your boots from your bow ties Well, the ball is round, as you might expect. The bone/bow tie looks less like either of those things than like a somewhat bent rectangle(矩形). The bell is diamond shaped, and the boot really does look somewhat like a wide boot with a thin toe.(Or like a hook, if you turn it over.) Though the shapes are somewhat less different after the batter(面糊) is added, see if you can still identify them the next time you get your Chicken McNuggets.
But why they have special shapes A curious consumer posed the question. A company representative replied that the shapes and their similar sizes ensure that they all take the same time to cook, which is necessary to ensure food safety. Plus, the shapes are fun for kids, and easy to dip for everyone!
And why is four the lucky number Well, the Q&A page claims that “Three would’ve been too few. Five would’ve been, like, silly or unreasonable.” Honestly, though, we doubt McDonald’s consumers would have really cared either way.
8.How are Chicken McNuggets’ shapes formed
A.They are processed by a cutting machine.
B.The four shapes are made by machine freely.
C.Some batter is added to the chicken breast meat.
D.They are the natural forms of the chicken breast meat.
9.What do we know about the shapes of McDonald’s Chicken McNuggets
A.The ball and the bell are of the same size.
B.The bone shape is most attractive to small kids.
C.The regular shapes make processing easier and safer.
D.The different shapes can arouse people’s imagination.
10.What is the author’s attitude to the number four of McDonald’s Chicken McNuggets
A.Positive.
B.Disapproving.
C.Doubtful.
D.Unconcerned.
11.What is the text mainly about
A.The history of McDonald’s Chicken McNuggets.
B.A warning against eating McDonald’s Chicken McNuggets.
C.The introduction of McDonald’s Chicken McNuggets’ four shapes.
D.An explanation of the processing of McDonald’s Chicken McNuggets.

What’s your opinion on spicy food Some people cannot handle even the smallest amount of chili peppers in their dinner while others can’t get enough of them.
Scientists have long been puzzled by why some people love the chili while others loathe it. Plenty of research has been done on the subject, dating back to as far as the 1970s. Previous results showed that a love of chilies is related to childhood experiences, and that cultural influences affect our taste too. But the latest study has found that a person’s love of spicy food may be linked to his or her personality more than anything else, CBC News reported.
“We have always assumed that a liking drives intake—we eat what we like and we like what we eat. But no one has actually directly bothered to connect personality with intake of chili peppers,” said Professor John E. Hayes from The Pennsylvania State University, who led the study.
But before you look at the study, you should first know that “spicy” is not a taste, unlike sour, sweet, bitter and salty tastes. It is, in fact, a burning feeling that you feel on the surface of your tongue. This got scientists thinking that maybe a love of spicy food is brought about by people’s longing for a thrill, something they usually get from watching action movies or riding a roller coaster.
In the study, 97 participants, both male and female, were asked to fill out questionnaires about their personality, for example, whether they like new experiences or tend to avoid risks. They were then given a glass of water with capsaicin(辣椒素), the plant chemical that makes a chili burn, mixed into it.
By comparing the answers to the questionnaire and how participants said their feeling about the spicy water, researchers found that those who tended to enjoy action movies or take risks were about six times more likely to enjoy the spicy water.
Interestingly, we used to believe that the reason why some people can withstand(承受) spicy food is that their tongues have become less sensitive to it. However, this latest study has found more otherwise. “It’s not that it doesn’t burn as badly, but that you actually learn to like the burning feeling,” Hayes explained.
12.What’s the meaning of the underlined word “loathe” in the second paragraph
A.Fear. B.Adapt to. C.Dislike. D.Put up with.
13.What did Professor John E. Hayes and his team discover from their study
A.What we eat actually helps to develop our personality.
B.Males are more likely to enjoy spicy food than females.
C.Those trying to avoid risks tend to be less interested in spicy food.
D.People are wrong to treat “spicy” as a kind of taste rather than a feeling.
14.Why do some people like spicy food according to the recent study
A.Because they love the burning feeling.
B.Because they want to challenge themselves.
A.Because their taste has become less sensitive.
D.Because the more they try spicy food, the less it burns.
15.What’s the main idea of the passage
A.Different people have different taste.
B.What one likes to eat mainly depends on one’s personality.
C.One’s personal experiences have nothing to do with their taste.
D.Whether one enjoys spicy food depends largely on one’s personality.

As many of us endure the long cold winter, we are tempted to tuck into (大吃) some filling and fattening foods. 16 And more often it’s because we need something to cheer us up. And, for a short while at least, they make us feel better—which is why we call them “comfort food”.
17 It depends on your preference and the association you have with particular tastes, textures and smells. But probably the most universally popular eatable comforter is the biscuit. 18 Besides, it gives us that all important sugary pick me up.
Moving on from the sweet and sugary snacks, famous chef and food writer Mary Berry knows about the kind of meals that warm us up and give us comfort in winter. She said “I think it becomes natural to think about comfort food as soon as the weather chills us and the nights become darker. 19 ”
The other thing about comforting dishes like mac and cheese, noodles or pizza is that they don’t require cooking skills in the kitchen: they are easy to make so we can get our fix of feel good food quickly. 20 Even though we know the ingredients are high in carbohydrates, sugar or salt, we continue to pig out. We don’t realize that what’s happening is that our minds are finding a way to trigger a really positive emotion and they’re making us eat that food.
Maybe we should take comfort from the fact that eating certain food just makes us feel happy. But, for some people, eating any kind of food brings joy, warmth, happiness and comfort.
A.Too much such food is harmful to health.
B.We find different kinds of feel good foods to lift our spirits.
C.However, we often feel so good that we eat too much.
D.Soup and warming foods are suggested as feel good winter treats.
E.This snack often brings back happy memories of childhood and family.

One morning more than thirty years ago, I entered the Track Kitchen, a restaurant where everyone from the humblest to the most powerful came for breakfast. I noticed an empty chair next to an elderly, unshaven man, who looked somewhat dirty. He was wearing a worn out hat and was alone. I asked if I might join him. He agreed quietly and I sat down to have my breakfast.
We carefully began a conversation and spoke about a lot of things. We never introduced ourselves. I was concerned that he might have no money and not be able to afford something to eat. So as I rose to go back to the counter and buy a second cup of coffee, I asked,
“May I get you something ”
“A coffee would be nice.”
Then I bought him a cup of coffee. We talked more, and he accepted another cup of coffee. Finally, I rose to leave, wished him well, and headed for the exit. At the door I met one of my friends. He asked,
“How did you get to know Mr. Galbreath ”
“Who ”
“The man you were sitting with. He is chairman of the Board of Churchill Downs.”
I could hardly believe it. I was buying, offering a free breakfast, and feeling pity for one of the world’s richest and most powerful men!

44.with 考查介词。along with为固定结构,意为“连同……一起”。故填with。
45.dates 考查动词的时态和主谓一致。设空处是谓语动词,根据上下文时态可知,此处应用一般现在时,且主语The ceremony为单数概念,谓语动词应用第三人称单数形式。故填dates。
第三部分 写作
第一节
One possible version:
Among all the traditional Chinese foods, my favorite is undoubtedly zongzi, which people eat on the day of the Dragon Boat Festival in memory of Qu Yuan, a famous poet.
The main ingredient of zongzi is sticky rice, but there are a variety of fillings, such as meat and eggs. It usually appears in the shape of a triangle. The taste of zongzi varies from region to region. There are mainly two versions: sweet or salty. But nowadays, young people are open to a mixture of different tastes.
Zongzi is a perfect combination of Chinese culture and food. It will always hold a special place in my heart.
第二节
One possible version:
Paragraph 1:
My few minutes with Mr. Galbreath changed my life. Several months later, I became jobless as my company went bankrupt. The following days saw my struggle to hunt for another suitable job. Then one day, I came across Mr. Galbreath who happened to be my interviewer. I was too nervous to say a word. “Come on, my boy,” Mr. Galbreath said to me in an encouraging voice. Motivated by him, I gathered my courage and made it to the last question confidently.
Paragraph 2:
Several days later, I was delighted to receive a letter informing me that I was employed. I burst into laughter, my eyes shining with excitement. Just as I was sharing the good news with my wife, the telephone rang. “Congratulations! My boy!” the voice of Mr. Galbreath came from the other end of the line. “Thank you for your recognition, Mr. Galbreath,” I said gratefully. “You deserve the position and the salary! You treat everyone with respect and you’ll be rewarded with the same kindness and sincerity,”Mr. Galbreath replied.
