Music can make us feel happy or relaxed, energize us, or move us to tears. As an orchestra conductor, Amy Andersson brings music to life, allowing people to experience the feelings that music can bring.
Andersson fell in love with music as a child. She started to sing in the school chorus in the first grade, began studying the piano at 7, and started composing at 9. Her school had no orchestra, but she bought many recordings of great orchestras and conductors and listened to them for hours every day.
During a concert, the audience see the back of a conductor and the arm movements she or he makes to lead the orchestra. What the audience do not see is all the work the conductor has done beforehand to prepare for the performance.
Months before a concert, Andersson studies a piece of music by playing it on the piano. She decides how she wants each part to sound. Should it be fast or slow Loud or soft She reads about the composer’s life and reviews historical events that have influenced the composer. Her goal is to recreate the music as the composer wanted.
While conducting, Andersson uses her whole body to express how the music should sound and feel. Her movements are dramatic when the music is energetic, and gentle when peaceful.
Each instrument makes a special sound. Although it is not necessary for conductors to know how to play all the instruments, they must be familiar with the sound of each instrument. To help young musicians understand how to play the music, Andersson will tell them to imagine a ship being hit by waves or a calm, leisurely walk.
Andersson has seen the audience at her concerts applauding(鼓掌) together in rhythm. She is happy to know that she and the musicians have brought joy into ordinary days.

Music is good for health. And drumming may be the best of all. As well as being physically demanding, it requires people to adjust their limbs and to react to outside stimuli, such as what the rest of the band is up to. It is particularly helpful for children who have emotional and behavioral difficulties.
Researchers at the Clem Burke Drumming Project—an organization named after Blondie’s drummer, who was one of its founders—have shown that teaching such children to drum helps them to control their reactions more generally, to focus more effectively on tasks they are given, and to communicate better with other people.
The project’s latest work, led by Cahart of King’s College London, goes a step further. It looks at the neurological(神经系统的) changes which accompany these variations.
Ms. Cahart and her colleagues found 36 autistic(自闭症的)teenagers and divided them into two groups. One had drum lessons twice a week for eight weeks. The others did not. At the beginning and end of the project everyone was asked to stay still for 45 minutes in a machine to see how the activity of their brains had changed. Their behaviour was also made a recording.
As expected, most of the drumming group showed positive behavioral changes. And these were indeed reflected in their brains. The machine scans showed that several groups of connections between parts of those brains had strengthened during the experiment. In particular, two regions involved in attention control, formed strong links, separately, with places associated with introspection (内省) and with areas involved in understanding facial expressions.
These changes in the brain thus nicely match the changes in behaviour which learning to drum brings. Not a surprise, perhaps. But a confirmation of drumming’s power to heal.
5.Which is not the benefit of drumming for children who have emotional and behavioural difficulties
A.To be more brilliant and active.
B.To control their reactions more generally.
C.To communicate better with other people.
D.To focus more effectively on tasks they are given.
6.What are recorded in the process of the project
A.The way and frequency of drumming.
B.The teenagers’ attention control on drumming.
C.The teenagers’ emotion and their behaviour.
D.Activity of the teenagers’ brains and their behaviour.
7.What are the main changes in the brain caused by drumming
A.Places associated with introspection are more active.
B.Connections between parts of brains are strengthened.
C.Regions involved in attention control become stronger.
D.Changes in the brain cannot match the changes in behaviour.
8.What is this article mainly about
A.The way of keeping healthy.
B.The healing effect of drumming.
C.The relationship between brain and behaviour.
D.The relationship between drumming and brain changes.

Language is a part of our daily life, no matter where we live in the world. Similarly, music is a part of many people’s life. 1 Here are some of their similarities.
Both language and music have a writing system
In English we record language using the alphabet, which is a collection of letters. Similarly, we use notes to make a recording of music. Just as you are reading this collection of letters on the paper and finding meaning in it, musicians read notes and create meaning in the form of music which we can hear. 2 For example, we can read the ideas or hear the composition of someone who lived hundreds of years ago, which is really quite uplifting.
Both vary with culture
3 In the same way, we know that styles of music are different around the world, which gives us the opportunity to explore many different cultures through their music. This also means that there is something for everyone! Even if you don’t like Britpop melodies, you may love the energy of Latin American salsa music.
Both share emotions
How do you know that I am angry 4 Similarly, music can sound angry, sorrowful or happy. Music can show you exactly how the composer was or is feeling, and allows us to share that emotion. When you feel happy, you might want to sing and dance to a happy song.
 5
A.Different cultures make different music.
B.Both language and music play a huge role in our life.
C.You can guess where someone is from by listening to their language.
D.By reading pieces of text or music, we are able to share experiences through time.
E.In contrast, you have probably also listened to sad music when you were feeling down.
F.Of course, you may be able to see it in my face, but you will know for sure through my words.
G.We have all used music to express our emotions, often combining it with language in the form of song lyrics.

故选A。
画线部分所在句是Andersson在指导年轻的演奏者演奏音乐时告诉他们的话,这里照应上文“While conducting...Her movements are dramatic when the music is energetic, and gentle when peaceful.”
影响 7.be familiar with...
Although it is not necessary for conductors to know how to play all the instruments, they must be familiar with the sound of each instrument.
Although引导让步状语从句,从句中为“it is+形容词+for sb. to do sth.”句型,it作形式主语,动词不定式短语“to know...instruments”作真正的主语,“how to play all the instruments”为“疑问词+不定式”结构,作know的宾语。

故选A项。
通读全文,尤其根据第一段中的“Music is good for health. And drumming may be the best of all.”和最后一段中的“But a confirmation of drumming’s power to heal.”
Researchers at the Clem Burke Drumming Project—an organization named after Blondie’s drummer, who was one of its founders—have shown that teaching such children to drum helps them to control their reactions more generally, to focus more effectively on tasks they are given, and to communicate better with other people.
“named after...founders”是过去分词短语作后置定语,修饰organization,其中“who was...founders”是who引导的定语从句,修饰先行词Blondie’s drummer;“that teaching such children...other people”是that引导的宾语从句,作have shown的宾语,其中“teaching such children to drum”是动名词短语作主语;由and连接的三个并列的动词不定式短语“to control...generally”“to focus...given”和“to communicate...people”作宾语补足语,“they are given”是省略引导词的定语从句,修饰tasks。
根据上文“Just as you are reading this collection...hear.”可知,读文章和乐谱都可以带来一定的意义,而下文的举例“we can read the ideas or hear the composition of someone who lived hundreds of years ago”则正是说明了读文章或乐谱所带来的意义可以超越时间。
根据上文中的“Here are some of their similarities.”
Just as you are reading this collection of letters on the paper and finding meaning in it, musicians read notes and create meaning in the form of music which we can hear.
musicians read notes and create...of music是主句。
