“What is the story of your piano ” A new friend asked over dinner. My piano stays in a corner of the small living room. “All pianos have stories,” she said. Suddenly, my piano’s story came flooding over me fully, as if I’d always had this tale to tell.
I loved music since childhood. I studied the recorder and moved to the violin, trumpet and guitar. But playing the piano had always been my dream, a dream our family could not afford.
I grew up in a Chinese immigrant family in Toronto. My father waited tables in a Chinese restaurant, and my mother worked in a Chinese laundry. Despite our poor childhood, my siblings (兄弟姐妹) and I were always fed with love. I can’t remember which birthday it was when my mother spared the money to buy me a doll. Of course, by then I’d outgrown wanting dolls. But she worked too hard to know that and I never told her. I happily and gratefully accepted the doll because I loved the gift and that was her loving me enough to buy it for me.
So it was eventually with my piano. It was in my last year of high school. I took piano lessons for about a year before university forced me to stop. I had to make a decision to continue the more practical goal of medical school or my love for music. The practical one in me won. But I also stopped piano lessons because as with my doll, it was too late to learn to play the way I wanted.
I moved that piano around with me over the next decade— until my son was born, he showed an early interest in music, so I put him in piano lessons.
I’ve come to realize that in pursuit of my career, I’ve let all personal pleasure fall away. Maybe it’s time to get that piano retuned(重新调音) again, this time for myself, before it’s too late to enjoy. Maybe that’s something we all should do right now.
Sometimes a single question can open whole paths of thinking and discovery. So, what is the story of your piano
4.What do we know about the author from the first three paragraphs

D.She faced academic and career pressure.
6.What will the author probably do in the near future

C
When I was young, I never fully appreciated why my parents signed me up for every music class. I viewed practicing the piano and the violin as a burden, or something that had to be done every day before being able to watch Disney Channel shows.
While the majority of my classmates would bond over their dislike of learning an instrument, I found myself gradually expecting to learn new songs, practice them and perform them. Maybe it’s because my parents used Disney Channel as anincentive, or maybe I just needed their early push. Regardless, I came to appreciate music as a form of self expression.
Learning musical notes has benefits to language development and cognitive(认知的) functions. Studies have shown that the left planum temporale, the part of the brain involved in hearing processing and receptive language, is active when musicians are either reading and listening to music or comprehending speech. But, when non musicians are listening to music, their brains do not process it in the same area as language—while processing language is a natural ability, music awareness is something that can be obtained through practicing.
Take Finland for example, where the average person learns to speak three to five languages. This is a result of the country’s custom of early music training, in which children learn the fundamentals of musical notes through songs and games. In fact, a study reveals a strong connection between children who study music before and the development of higher IQs and a bigger range of vocabulary.
In addition, evolutionary evidence from Oxford University highlights how speech and language started developing merely 200,000 years ago. It’s clear that the neural networks of both music and language have overlap(重叠部分), and that our use of speech as a form of communication has its roots in the original evolutionary history of music. So if you’re looking to learn something new, consider picking up a new instrument!
8.What was the author’s original attitude towards learning musical instruments
A.Uninterested. B.Favorable.
C.Cautious. D.Unconcerned.
9.What does the underlined word “incentive” in Paragraph 2 mean
A.Threat. B.Standard.
C.Alternative. D.Motivation.
10.What does the example of Finland show
A.Learning musical notes enlarges vocabulary.
B.Children with higher IQs have a rich imagination.
C.Practicing music helps improve language ability.
D.The use of foreign languages increases communicative skills.
11.What does the last paragraph probably imply
A.Language originated from music.
B.Everyone should learn an instrument.
C.The history of language is longer than that of music.
D.Learning music is more difficult than learning languages.
D
In all the world’s cultures, people sing, play instruments, and celebrate with music. It plays such an important role in our lives that all fields focus on its study, including one looking at the biology of music. Experts are finding that because of the way our brains process music, learning to play an instrument or just listening to music can have a wide range of benefits.
Music education has received a lot of attention. Learning to play an instrument can help children improve math, science, and language skills. One study in Canada tracked children’s IQ scores for nine months, discovering that children who studied music had the biggest test score improvements. The secret may lie in the way reading music and playing notes use several areas of the brain, thus increasing our ability to learn school subjects. For example, reading notes improves spatial(空间的) reasoning skills, which are helpful in solving math problems like fraction(分数) problems.
Music is also used for medical purposes, such as the treatment of diseases which affect memory. The secret lies in the way the brain processes music. One area near the forehead, the medial prefrontal cortex, connects music with memories stored in two other areas: the amygdala and hippocampus. That’s why an old song can remind you of something that happened years ago. For patients suffering from diseases like Alzheimer’s, listening to music can help unlock buried memories.
With the evidence of music’s benefits pouring in, it’s no wonder some countries make music study a part of their education systems. People are recognizing that music is more than just a form of entertainment. It’s also great for the brain.
12.Why do people study music
A.Because music can be used for medical treatment.
B.Because our brains can process music in different ways.
C.Because music plays a very important role in our lives.
D.Because music education has received a lot of attention.
13.According to the Canadian study, the IQ scores of which children increased the most
A.Those who had already had high IQs.
B.Those who had always played music.
C.Those who could not play any instrument.
D.Those who studied music for a period of time.
14.Which of the following is a kind of disease
A.Alzheimer’s.
B.Spatial reasoning.
C.The medial prefrontal cortex.
D.The amygdala and hippocampus.
15.What can be the best title for the text

Should you listen to music when you work
Do you like to listen to music when you work Ask this question at a party, and you’ll probably get 21 responses. Some will say they love it, claiming that it improves their performance; others will say they find it distracting(令人分心的) and cannot work 22 with music playing in the background.
Interestingly enough, our research has found that both of these viewpoints can be true. It just 23 on what sort of work you’re doing.
In a recent study, we brought participants into our lab to perform a variety of tasks. They included a(n) 24 task—searching through word lists and crossing out words containing the letter “a” and a more difficult task—memorizing word pairs and 25 the word to its partner. Some participants completed all of the tasks in silence, 26 others completed the tasks with instrumental music that was either loud or soft, and either simple or complex, the latter meaning music with more instruments being played. Several key findings 27 from our study.
We found that participants who listened to simple music or no music performed almost the same on the easy task. However, participants who listened to 28 music performed best on the easy task.
On the contrary, participants performed worse on the more difficult task when they listened to any music, regardless of complexity or volume, compared to those who didn’t listen to any music.
How should we 29 these findings They suggest that people have limited mental resources on which both 30 and tasks can draw. We can become 31 and our minds may wander when these resources are not fully used. But we can also become overexcited and 32 when these resources are used up.
Not surprisingly, we typically need to use fewer of our mental resources when we perform easy tasks, whereas demanding tasks require more brainpower. However, because we might be less 33 during easier tasks, there’s a greater risk of drifting off. Music might give us the extra 34 we need to overcome the monotony(单调乏味). However, difficult tasks already demand a lot of our resources. Listening to music can become too much.
So best 35 should appear when we strike the “sweet spot”, which may depend on the type of music and the type of tasks.

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
I love to play the piano and I greatly enjoy performing my songs, so when the annual winter recital was canceled, I was disappointed. I had looked forward to it for a long time and had already prepared two of my best songs.
My mom had a wonderful idea, however, to turn this letdown into somessthing worthwhile. “You can perform your songs at Carriage House Senior Living,” my mom suggested brightly. “I’m sure the seniors there who do not have family to visit them that often would really appreciate the music and you could play more than just two songs.”
I immediately thought this was a great idea. One of the things I did not like about the recitals was that I was limited to playing just a couple of songs. Playing the piano at Carriage House seemed like a win win situation because not only would I get to play more songs, but I would also have the chance to cheer up the residents there with some lively tunes.
My mom called Carriage House and made arrangements for me to perform. In the coming days, I worked especially hard to polish up fifteen pieces that I thought the crowd would enjoy, including many old classics.
When the much anticipated day finally arrived, my family and I drove to Carriage House. Walking through the enormous double doors, we stepped into an entryway that overlooked the spacious grand dining room. Right at the entrance to the dining room stood the piano as if it were just waiting to make some music to liven the place up a bit. At nearly every table several gray haired women or men were seated enjoying their dinner and the company that the crowded room provided. Despite the conversations going on at various tables, isolation hung like a dark cloud in the room.
Almost immediately, we were greeted by an old woman with a walker who introduced herself as Phyllis in charge of Carriage House. She welcomed me and led me to the stage.
注意:续写词数应为150左右。
Paragraph 1:
As I sat down on the bench, I pressed a key on the piano and was surprised to hear no sound.
Paragraph 2:
Nervousness melted away and I started to enjoy the performance with the old.

One possible version:
Dear Peter,
I am very glad to have the chance to share my opinions about music and my favorite music with you. Music plays an important role in our life. I like both pop music and traditional music. Pop music can bring me excitement and lovely tunes. Traditional music shows me the peaceful side of the world and can even lead me to pursue the true meaning of life.

第二节
One possible version:
Paragraph 1:
As I sat down on the bench, I pressed a key on the piano and was surprised to hear no sound. Feeling as if the whole world was watching me, I was struck deaf with embarrassment. How could I perform the song without the piano I was on pins and needles when Phyllis slowly made her way to the front of the crowd of diners and announced in a comforting tone, “This girl has come to perform for us but the piano seems to be a little nervous.” Almost immediately, several people stepped forward to help me plug in the piano and set the microphone. With everything ready, I took a deep breath and gave my performance.
Paragraph 2:
Nervousness melted away and I started to enjoy the performance with the old. Some of the people swayed in their chairs to the beat of the music while others tapped theirs toes. The performance ended up with a storm of applause from the crowd. I realized that it was far better than a piano recital because almost everyone seemed to truly appreciate my music and I was proud that I had the power to spread kindness to them. It ended up being a blessing in disguise that the recital was canceled, leading me to share the gift of music with those who needed it most.
