Quietly sitting there reading, I found myself suddenly listening to the train guard's announcements. Train travelers will surely agree that when the guard makes an announcement, whether it's the recorded message or the guard's message, few people listen to it, because it's often quite dull or hard to understand.This.one was different. I noticed that other passengers appeared to be listening, too. Not only that, everyone was smiling!
Why was so much attention being paid to this message As best I can recall the guard said something along these lines, “Good Morning Ladies, Gentlemen and Children, this is the 7: 35 a.m. from Penrith to Central and you'll be pleased to know that we are right on time. And what a lovely morning it is in Sydney today. The sun is shining, birds are singing, and all's right with the world. I trust you have a great day wherever you're going. Thanks for catching my train this morning and I hope to see you again soon.”
Quite a few people (obviously previous strangers) started talking to one another about the guards excellent message and how good it had made everyone feel. I started thinking about this, and then I found the young guard and said“Were you the guard on the 7: 35 a.m. from Penrith ” The guard seemed a bit stunned at first, replying, “Yes, yyyyes.” “Well, I really appreciate your announcement. Thank you for your extremely good message, which gave me and the other passengers such a good start to the day. Please keep doing it.” I said.
There are two messages for me in what happened that day. Firstly, when people are happy in their work it shows in what they do and say. Secondly, the story attaches much importance to the benefits that accumulate from thanking people for something they've done, particularly when it’s not expected. Can you imagine the conversation that guard would have when he got home

C. The train from Penrith. D. The unexpected appreciation.
27. Which of the following can be the best title for the text
A. An Intelligent Guard. B. A Boring Train Story.

It's 3 o'clock and you've been hard at work. As you sit at your desk, a strong desire for chocolate overcomes you. You try to busy yourself to make it go away. But it doesn't. Here is another situation. Perhaps you are not feeling well. The only thing you want to eat is a big bowl of chicken soup, like your mom used to make when you were sick as a child. Food cravings area strong desire for a specific type of food. And they are normal.
Scientists at the website How Stuff Works compare hunger and cravings this way. Hunger is a fairly simple connection between the stomach and the brain. They even call it simply “stomach hunger.” When our stomachs bur x up all of the food we have eaten, a hormone(荷尔蒙) sends a message to one part of the brain for more food, which regulates our most basic body functions such as thirst, hunger and sleep. The brain then produces a chemical to start the appetite and you eat. Hunger is a function of survival.
A craving is more complex. It activates(使活跃) brain areas related to emotion, memory and reward. These are the same areas of the brain activated during drug-craving studies. So, some scientists call food cravings “mind hunger.” People often crave foods that are high in fat and sugar. Foods that are high in fat or high in sugar produce chemicals in the brain. These chemicals give us feelings of pleasure.
In a 2017 study, researchers at Cambridge University found that “dieting or restricted eating generally increases the possibility of food craving. So, the more you deny yourself a food that you want, the more you may crave it. However, fasting is a bit different. They found that eating no food at all for a short period of time lessened food cravings.
So, the next time you crave something very specific, know that your brain maybe more to blame than your stomach.
28. What is the function of the first paragraph
A. To remind readers of their own special food.
B. To deepen the understanding of hunger.
C. To report the discovery of craving study.
D. To lead to the topic of the whole passage.
29. What do we learn about food craving
A. It shows food.is.t inked to feelings.
B. It ensures a person survives hunger.
C. It means the stomach functions well.
D. It proves the brain decides your appetite.
30. What's the likely result of dieting
A. The decrease of chemicals. B. The increase of food desire.
C. The refusal of fat and sugar. D. The disappearance of appetite.
31. What does the passage mainly discuss
A. The functions of brain areas. B. What hunger is all about.
C. The findings of food craving. D. What dieting may bring us.

While staring out of the window during a flight; not everyone will think carefully about the question why airplanes have rounded windows rather than square ones.
Over the years, aerospace engineering has made huge steps in airplane technology, meaning planes can carry more passengers and go faster. The planes have also changed shape to increase safety—including the windows. As commercial air travel took off in the mid-20th century, airline companies began to fly at higher altitudes to lower their cost—the air density(密度) is lower up there, creating less drag(阻力) for airplanes. However, higher altitudes came with problems, like the fact human beings can't really survive at 30, 000 feet. To make that possible, the cabin was changed to a cylindrical(圆柱体) shape to support the pressure inside. The de Havilland Comet came into fashion in the 1950s.With a closed cabin, it was able to go higher and faster than other aircraft.
But at first, plane builders left in the standard square windows and this expansion meant disaster. Where there's a corner, there's a weak spot. Windows, having four corners, have four potential weak spots, making them likely to crash under stress—such as air pressure. By curving the window, the stress that would eventually break the window corner is distributed and the chance of it breaking is reduced. Rounded shapes are also stronger and resist deformation(变形), and can thus survive the extreme differences in pressure between the inside and outside of the aircraft.
Fortunately, designers figured out the lack of design pretty quickly. Now we have nice, rounded airplane windows that can resist the pressure of traveling altitude. It gives being able to gaze out of your window to the world from 35, 000 feet a whole new outlook, doesn't it
32. Why did airlines aim to fly at higher altitudes
A. To save money for less drag. B. To help the plane to takeoff.
C. To increase safety of the plane. D. To carry more passengers and go faster.
33. What does the underlined words “de Havilland Comet” in Paragraph 2 refer to
A. An aircraft. B. A band. C. A planet. D. A design.
34. Which is the advantage of the rounded window
A. It increases the air pressure.
B. It weakens the strength of air pressure.
C. It reduces the possibility of breaking up.
D. It helps to survive the extreme weather.
35. Where does this text come from
A. A newspaper on safe driving. B. A. science book on flying.
C. A website on survival skills. D. A magazine on fashion design.

Food is life; it gives us the nourishment we need to stay alive and be healthy. Usually, we eat because we are hungry or need energy. Do men and women choose different comfort foods Wan sink's research at the University of Illinois says “yes”. In his study, the favorite comfort food for both men and women was ice cream. After this, men usually preferred hot, savory(味香的) foods like soup or noodles. 39 Men and women like to eat comfort foods when they are happy, but women eat these foods more when they are sad or worried.
40 About 40 percent of the comfort foods in Wansink's study were healthy main dishes or soups and vegetables. It shows, says Wansink, that a comfort food can taste good and be good for you.

Text 10
W: Hello, everyone. I’d like to introduce the BBC today. The British Broadcasting Company was established in 1922. Four years later, it changed its name to the British-Broadcasting Corporation, better known as the BBC, and that is how it has remained ever since. From the beginning the BBC was a public service radio, but also an independent operator. Except during the war years. It has never been controlled by the government. In the early days of BBC radio, there was not a lot of news on the radio. There were music, drama, discussions and children's programs; but news was not broadeast until after 7 pm, to avoid competition with the newspapers!
Today it has several national television channels, lots of radio channels and a growing number of international services. It also has a very popular internet site, with news stories from Britain and around the world. In tomorrow's world, communications and the media will become more and more important. With almost 100 years of experience, the BBC is determined to remain one of the world's major players in media.
