  whether在此引导宾语从句, 意为“是否”, 同义词为if。一般情况下可以互换使用。例如: Can you tell me if/whether you like swimming? 你可以告诉我你是否喜欢游泳吗? 【妙辨异同】if和whether的区别
(1)当与or或者or not连用时, 宾语从句常用whether引导, 构成whether. . . or(not)结构。
I asked your secretary whether she could come or not.
我问过你的秘书她是否能来。(2)if还表示“如果”, 引导条件状语从句, 主句用一般将来时, 从句用一般现在时表将来, 而whether无此用法。
If it rains tomorrow, we will stay at home.

Unit 3??whether/if及疑问词引导的宾语从句
【观察领悟】
仔细观察以下句子, 体会宾语从句的用法。
1. Please tell me whether he is thirsty.
2. Could you tell me where you are from?
3. I’d like to know what Lucy’s job is.
4. Do you know whether he can swim or not?
5. He asked the secretary when the boss could come back.
6. He didn’t know why Jenny was late again this morning. 【知识构建】
  (一)whether/if引导的宾语从句
  (1)当宾语从句表达不确定的概念(一般疑问句)时, 用if/whether引导, 意为“是否”“是不是”。
例如: Mary asked us if/whether we would go swimming on the weekend. 玛丽问我们周末是否去游泳。 (2)一般情况下, if/whether可以互换使用, 但当从句中有or not/or, 或从句作介词的宾语时, 只能用whether引导。
例如: I don’t know whether they need help or not.
我不知道他们是否需要帮助。  (二)疑问词引导的宾语从句
(1)当宾语从句由特殊疑问句转化而来时, 用when, where, who, how或why等词引导, 分别表示“什么时间, 什么地点, 什么人, 什么方式, 什么原因”等。
(2)在宾语从句中要用陈述句语序。
例如: I don’t know when he will get home.
我不知道他什么时候到家。 He asked me where I lived. 他问我住在哪里。
Lily told me who finished the homework.
莉莉告诉我谁做完了作业。
Tom didn’t understand how he could solve the problem.
汤姆不明白如何解决这个问题。【温馨提示】宾语从句的时态问题
1. 当主句是现在时态时, 从句可以根据实际情况选择不同的时态。例如: I believe we will succeed one day.
我相信有一天我们将会成功的。
2. 当主句是过去时态时, 从句一般使用表示过去的某个具体时态。例如: I did not know what the homework was.
我不知道家庭作业是什么。
3. 当宾语从句所表示的是客观事实, 普遍真理或自然现象时, 不管主句用什么时态, 从句时态都用一般现在时。例如: Our physics teacher told us that the light travels faster than the sound. 我们的物理老师告诉我们光比声音传播得快。【巧学助记】
宾语从句用法口诀
宾语从句须注意, 几点事项应牢记。
一是关键引导词, 不同句子词相异。
陈述句子用that; 一般疑问是否(if, whether)替; 特殊问句更好办, 引导还用疑问词。
二是时态常变化, 主句不同从句异。主句若为现在时, 从句时态应看意; 主句若为过去时, 从句时态向前移。
三是语序要记清, 从句永保陈述序。【学以致用】
