In early 2021, I hit a rut in my studies. As a doctoral candidate at the University of Chicago in Illinois, I worked to design safer, more effective materials for vaccine delivery. Although I had been productive early in my graduate career, my long hours and hard work were no longer translating into success in the laboratory, and I felt hopeless about achieving my goals. Something had to change.
As I began to search for the cause of my struggles, I became increasingly aware that my "quiet time" at the lab bench — for instance, when I was running columns or experiments — was anything but. Instead of thinking about science, I was watching television or interacting with social media on my smartphone. Although I could cover up this inefficiency with longer hours, my work felt chaotic (混乱的) and disorganized. I would come home from a long day in the lab and respond to e-mails or messages over dinner or in bed. This all came to a head last summer, when my inability to balance work and life led me to seek help from the university's student mental-health services.
Through a combination of consultation and personal reflection, I came to understand my problems. To regain my focus, I chose to reduce my connectivity by using a basic mobile phone without an Internet connection during work hours, and removing unnecessary apps from my smartphone when I did use it.
Underscoring the addictive nature of smartphones, I experienced symptoms of withdrawal when I first did this. With time, however, I began to make practical use of my quiet time. I started reading papers during long experiments and developed a habit of writing in my down time. Perhaps most importantly, I have felt my anxiety decrease and my productivity and creativity improve dramatically, trading my chaotic work-life relationship for one with clearer boundaries and plenty of new scientific ideas. Now, even when I do carry my smartphone, I feel less forced to check for e-mails or messages and can concentrate more closely on whatever task is at hand.
24. What does the underlined part "hit a rut" in paragraph 1 mean
A. Stopped progressing smoothly. B. Had very slow reactions.
C. Accepted hard work's value. D. Overcame a big problem.
25. What made the author struggle
A. Running columns or experiments B. His inability to get mental-health services.
C. Replying to e-mails or messages. D. His addiction to the phone.
26. What did the author choose to do during his quiet time later
A. Reflect on his successes and failures. B. Learn practical writing.
C. Watch television news. D. Do some reading.
27. How does the author feel now
A. More courageous. B. More sociable.
C. More focused. D. More understanding.

Like most nerds who read science fiction, I've kept wondering how society will greet true artificial intelligence, if and when it arrives. Will we panic Ignore it and go about our daily lives Hence, it's been fascinating to watch the Twittersphere try to make sense of ChatGPT, a new cutting-edge A. I. chatbot opened for testing at the end of 2022. ChatGPT—which stands for "generative pre-trained transformer"— landed with a splash. In five days, more than a million people signed up to test it.
In recent years, though a few A. I. tools have gotten good at doing narrow and well-defined tasks, like writing marketing copy, they still tend to be weak when taken outside their comfort zones. But ChatGPT feels different, smarter, more flexible. It can write jokes and college-level essays. It can also guess at medical diagnoses, and even seems good at answering the types of open-ended analytical questions which frequently appear on school assignments.
The technology that powers ChatGPT isn't, strictly speaking, new. It's based on what the company calls "GPT-3. 5,” an upgraded version of GPT-3 in 2020. While the existence of a highly capable linguistic superbrain might be old news to A. I. researchers, it's the first time such a powerful tool has been made available to the general public through a free, easy-to-use web interface.
Unlike Google, ChatGPT doesn't crawl the web for information on current events, and its knowledge is restricted to things it learned before 2021. Since ChatGPT training data includes billions of examples of human opinion, representing every reasonable view, it's also, in some sense, moderate by design. Without specific prompting, for example, it's hard to coax (诱导) a strong opinion out of ChatGPT about political debates. Usually, you'll get a fair summary of what each side believes.
28. How did the public initially respond to ChatGPT
A. People worried about this new technology.
B. Many people found it hard to understand ChatGPT.
C. A number of people couldn't wait to register for a try.
D. Millions of people were ignorant of this new A. I. chatbot.
29. What can we learn from paragraph 2
A. ChatGPT is a typical A. I. tool used for specified tasks.
B. A. I. apps provide perfect answers to analytical questions.
C. ChatGPT helps doctors with serious medical diagnoses.
D. Homework might not be a problem for ChatGPT users.
30. In which aspect is ChatGPT different from the GPT-3
A. People can gain access to it free of charge.
B. Linguistic researchers speak highly of it.
C. It is welcomed by A. I. researchers with enthusiasm.
D. It is the first powerful tool open to the general public.
31. What's the text mainly about
A. The future of ChatGPT B. The brilliance of ChatGPT
C. The development of ChatGPT D. The arguments about ChatGPT

The next time San Francisco residents stop a taxi, they may step into a car with no one behind the wheel. Driverless taxis are now allowed to come on the city's streets. On June 2, 2022, Cruise, a division of General Motors (GM), was approved to charge for rides in its self-driving cars, becoming the first company allowed to operate commercial driverless cars in a major Us city.
Though Cruise is regarding it as a big win, its self-driving cars aren't totally free to run on the streets of San Francisco as they please. Cruise vehicles will be limited to transporting passengers in less crowded areas of the city between 10 p. m. and 6 a. m. The speed limit is 30 mph. They are also not allowed to operate in heavy rain or fog. The rules are meant to reduce any injuries or accidents.
Cruise plans to launch the service gradually with a team of just 30 cars. The first robotaxis will be improved versions of GM's Chevrolet Bolt. However, the company is seeking approval to get its custom-built Cruise Origin on public roads. The driverless electric vehicle has no wheels or pedals (踏板) and can attain highway speeds. The car consists mostly of a sitting space, where passengers can face each other.
Cruise's ability to obtain the commercial permit to operate is a big step forward. However, the company still has to convince passengers that its technology is safe. Many remain concerned about safety. A 2021 survey by the American Automobile Association found that 74 percent of Americans are afraid to ride in a self-driving vehicle.
It remains to be seen how the new driverless taxi experiment will play out in San Francisco. But based on the vast number of companies that are racing to develop self-driving vehicles and the tens of thousands of people on waitlists for robotaxi rides, the Cruise pioneering program is at least set for popularity, if not success. 32. What can we learn about the Cruise's driverless ride services
A. The services have turned out to be a great success.
B. The services receive great support from the public.
C. The services have run in some major cities of the USA.
D. The services are limited to some regions of San Francisco.
33. What does the author describe in detail in paragraph 3
A. The feature of Cruise Origin.
B. The future of self-driving cars.
C. The original plan of the company.
D. The weaknesses of Chevrolet Bolt.
34. What is the attitude of most Americans towards the self-driving taxis
A. Doubtful. B. Opposed. C. Favorable. D. Unconcerned.
35. What can be the best title of the text
A. Cruise Offers Free Self-driving Ride Services
B. Self-driving Cars Are Coming to San Francisco
C. Self-driving Vehicles Are Popular in Major Cities
D. Companies Begin to Charge for Rides in Self-driving Cars

How to practice emotional awareness
What is emotional awareness Emotional awareness is being able to identify and make sense of not only our own emotions but those of others. It's absolutely essential in understanding our behaviors and changing our way of dealing with the problems. With emotional awareness, we can understand how this influences our behaviors. _36_.
Of course, describing exactly how we feel can often prove difficult. _37_ It's not always easy to put a finger on exactly what's wrong, without digging a little deeper. This is often because on some level we don't want to know how we really feel.
_38_: unhealthy thoughts, behaviors and coping mechanisms that are hidden from our view. Perhaps you lash out(猛击)or withdraw when you feel overwhelmed or go into a flood of criticism and self-doubt when you receive negative feedback.
Mindfulness is the process of bringing our attention to the present moment and becoming more aware of our thoughts. It's a state of calm, non-judgmental reflection. _39_. We can quiet the mental chatter that often accompanies difficult emotions and instead sit with the physical sensation of the emotion in our body. Doing this regularly allows us to be more aware of the source of our emotions and enables us to carry out strategies to manage them more effectively. Self-reflection develops emotional awareness and is key to understanding why you feel the way you do. Activities such as journaling can be really beneficial in learning about your thought processes. _40_It can be difficult to feel heard by others if we don't have the language to describe how we're feeling.
A. And in turn, change the way we respond to challenging situations
B. Without emotional awareness, we may develop emotional blind spots
C. It's the very reason we turn to general phrases like "I'm not myself today"
D. Sometimes what we really struggle with is putting our emotions into words
E. There are many ways to be mindful, from practicing breath work to sitting in silence
F. And for many of us, that means understanding how we feel and why it can be incredibly difficult
G. Research shows that being aware of your emotions is hugely beneficial to social and emotional functioning

Linda, a high school girl, was feeling depressed after she had failed her mid-term exams. She didn't answer her teachers' questions actively in class like she used to. Instead, she began to lower her head and got absent-minded easily. Her friends and classmates were worried about her, but she didn't feel like talking about it with them. Mrs. Green, her English teacher, noticed her changes and decided to do something before it got worse.
One day, Mrs. Green entered the classroom and asked her students to prepare for a surprise test. They waited anxiously at their desks for the test to begin. Mrs. Green handed out the question papers, with the text facing down as usual. After she handed them all out, she asked her students to turn the page and begin. To everyone's surprise, there were no questions, just a black dot(点)in the center of the page. Mrs. Green, seeing the expression on everyone's face, told them the following:
"I want you to write what you see there.
The students, confused, got started on the task.
At the end of the class, Mrs. Green collected all the answer papers and started reading them aloud in front of all the students. Just as Mrs. Green had expected, with no exception, all of them described the black dot, trying to explain its position in the middle of the sheet, etc. Mrs. Green then picked out Linda's paper and added,
"Linda, I like your idea. Would you please follow me to the office and talk about it ”.
"Er. . . Yes, madam!" Linda was puzzled because she thought her idea was no better than anyone else's. Like others, she also described the black dot only and ignored the white part of the paper.
Feeling nervous, Linda went into Mrs. Green's office. __________
"Mrs. Green is right. I should focus more on the white part of the paper!" Linda got refreshed. __________

第二节:读后续写
Feeling nervous, Linda went into Mrs. Green 's office. Mrs. Green invited her to share her ideas. After that, Mrs. Green smiled, "Have you ever noticed the white part of the paper "Linda shook her head confused because it never occurred to her. Mrs. Green continued, "The black dot is just like the failure in life, only a small part. If we focus only on it, we might easily overlook the happiness of life, the bigger part. "Suddenly, Linda understood it. Tears welling up her eyes, she expressed gratitude to Mrs. Green before leaving the office.
"Mrs. Green is right. I should focus more on the white part of the paper! "Linda got refreshed. Only then did she realize that she had a lot of admirable teachers, beloved families and friendly classmates. The failure of the exams was just a small part. From then on, Linda became active in the class again. She made steady progress in study and eventually got the best grades in the final exams. After this experience, Linda deeply realized that sometimes life can be hard, but we should always be positive and look at the bright side.
