Ⅲ.阅读理解
A
I had to knock on the taxi to get his attention. Finally, the driver, a man about 60, looked up from behind the wheel and apologized, “I'm sorry, but I was reading a letter.” He sounded as if he had a cold or a cough.
Since I was in no hurry, I told him to finish his letter. He shook his head, explaining that he had already read it several times and almost knew it by heart. Curious, I asked whether it was from a child or maybe a grandchild. “This isn't family,” he replied, “though he might just as well have been a regular member of the family. Old Ed and I grew up together.”
They were always friends. But since he moved away from the neighborhood 30 years ago, it'd generally just been postcards at Christmas time between them. A couple of weeks ago, Ed died. “I should have kept in touch.” He repeated this, more to himself than to me. To comfort him, I said sometimes we just didn't seem to find the time. “But we used to find the time,” he said. “Take a look.” He handed the letter over to me.
The first sentence “I've been meaning to write for some time, but I've always delayed it.” reminded me of myself. It went on to say that he often thought about the good times they had had together. When I read the part where it said “Your friendship really means a lot to me, more than I can say because I'm not good at saying things like that”, I found myself nodding in agreement.
We had gone several kilometers and were almost at my hotel, so I read the last paragraph:“So I thought you'd like to know that I was thinking of you.” And it was ended with “Your Old Friend, Tom.”
“I thought your friend's name was Ed,”I said.
“I'm Tom,” he explained. “It's a letter I wrote to Ed before I knew he'd died. I never put it in the mailbox. I guess I should have written it sooner.” His face was pale as he wiped his eyes with a handkerchief.
When I got to my hotel room I didn't unpack right away. I had to write a letter and post it.

Mental and health experts believe personality plays an important part in how we experience stress. Personality is the way a person acts, feels and thinks.
Some people are aggressive and always in a hurry. They often become angry when things do not happen the way they planned. They belong to “Type A” personality. Studies suggest that these people often get stress-related disorders. The “Type B” personality is calmer. These people are able to deal with all kinds of situations more easily. As a result, they are less affected by stress.
Studies have also shown that men and women deal with stress differently. Women seem to be better able to deal with stress than men are. However, experts say women are three times more likely to develop depression in reaction to the stress in their lives. American writer John Gray became famous for his book, “Men are from Mars,Women are from Venus”.He notes that men and women have opposite ways of dealing with stress. For a man, the best way is to rest and forget about daily problems. But a woman suffering from stress needs to talk about her problems.”
Experts say there are several ways to deal with stress, including deep breathing, exercise, eating healthy foods, getting enough rest and balancing the time spent in working and playing. Exercise is one of the most effective stress-reduction measures, as physical changes from exercise make you feel better. In addition, exercise can also improve the body's defense system against disease.
Keeping stress to yourself can make problems worse. Experts say that expressing emotions to friends or family members or writing down your feelings can help reduce stress. And they also suggest that people should attempt to accept or change stressful situations whenever possible.
由于人的个性差异,每个人处理压力的方法是不一样的,而且男人和女人在处理压力方面表现得也不一样。让我们一览文章,去看看这种差别在哪里。
5.According to the experts, ________.
A.people respond to stress quite differently
B.people make the same response to stress
C.unlike women, men tend to feel depressed more easily
D.personality has nothing to do with how we experience stress
6.Compared with “Type A” personality, “Type B” personality ________.
A.causes more troubles
B.is less able to cope with different situations
C.is more easily affected by stress
D.tends to solve problems more peacefully
答案:D 细节理解题。从文章第二段中的最后三句可知,B型性格的人对待压力时更倾向于用平和的方式处理,故选D项。
7.By saying “Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus”, John Cray means that they ________.
A.express emotions in a different way
B.cope with stress in a different way
C.suffer from stress in a similar way
D.develop stress in the opposite way
答案:B 推理判断题。从第三段第五句中的“...men and women have opposite ways of dealing with stress”可知,John Gray意在说明男人和女人处理压力所采取的方式是不同的,所以答案选B项。
8.If you want to reduce your stress, you can ________.
A.take some exercise B.keep it to yourself
C.remain silent D.ignore the stressful situation

Jennifer got off the bus from the university and began walking towards the flat. She had to buy some food and stopped in one of the shops in the street. It was run by an Asian family, and although the prices there were a little higher than in the big supermarket further down the street, she did a lot of her shopping there. Mr Smith, the owner of the shop, was checking through a list, but smiled, when he saw her come in. She picked up a basket and walked towards the back of the shop, where the rice was kept. There were only two other people there. They were two teenage boys. She looked at them as she passed. They were both wearing long overcoats and they looked rather ridiculous because the coats were too big. But such things were popular with some teenagers at the time. “Watch out, stupid,” she heard one of them whisper to the other. She walkd on to the next aisle and found the rice she was looking for. Then she heard something else.It sounded like a tin dropping on the floor. She looked through a gap in the shelf and saw one of the boys bending down. She saw him pick up a tin of food. But instead of putting it in the shopping basket, he dropped it into the inside pocket of his long overcoat. Jennifer looked back down the aisle. She could see Mr Smith still checking through his list. Then she looked through the gap in the shelf again. The boys still had their backs to her. “Come on,let's get out of here,”she heard one of them say. At the same time, she saw one of them put another tin in his overcoat pocket. They moved away from her.

(2014·全国新课标Ⅰ改编)
Passenger pigeons (旅鸽) once flew over much of the United States in unbelievable numbers. Written accounts from the 18th and 19th centuries described flocks (群) so large that they darkened the sky for hours.
It was calculated that when its population reached its highest point, there were more than 3 billion passenger pigeons—a number equal to 24 to 40 percent of the total bird population in the United States, making it perhaps the most abundant bird in the world. Even as late as 1870 when their numbers had already become smaller, a flock believed to be 1 mile wide and 320 miles (about 515 kilometers) long was seen near Cincinnati.
Sadly, the abundance of passenger pigeons may have been their undoing. Where the birds were most abundant, people believed there was an ever-lasting supply and killed them by the thousands. Commercial hunters attracted them to small clearings with grain, waited until pigeons had settled to feed, then threw large nets over them, taking hundreds at a time. The birds were shipped to large cities and sold in restaurants.
By the closing decades of the 19th century, the hardwood forests where passenger pigeons nested had been damaged by Americans' need for wood, which scattered (驱散) the flocks and forced the birds to go farther north, where cold temperatures and spring storms contributed_to their decline. Soon the great flocks were gone, never to be seen again.
In 1897, the state of Michigan passed a law prohibiting the killing of passenger pigeon, but by then, no sizable flocks had been seen in the state for 10 years. The last confirmed wild pigeon in the United States was shot by a boy in Pike County, Ohio, in 1900. For a time, a few birds survived under human care. The last of them, known affectionately as Martha, died at the Cincinnati Zoological Garden on September 1, 1914.

Although many butterflies remain to be decreasing in the long run, last year three quarters of endangered species saw an increase in number, including some rare species.
Experts said the improvement in the butterflies' fortunes was likely to be the result of effective action on protection, such as leaving open wetland in woods where flowers can grow, and better weather in 2013 after three damaging wet summers.
Dr Tom Brereton said butterflies are extremely sensitive to changes in the weather. Last year saw a warm summer for successful feeding, which helped a number of butterflies in some way.
He even said climate change could be benefiting some butterfly species but many other butterfly species suffer from it. For example, the mountain ringlet suffers as it needs cold climates. And at the same time, the change is too rapid for most to get used to.
In the long run butterfly numbers have continued to drop, with three quarters of the nearly 60 species found in Britain seeing numbers fall in recent decades and nearly half of them seriously threatened.
The Lulworth skipper, one of the UK's rarest butterflies, had its worst year since 1976, and there are people worrying that changing the environment to benefit other species may be harming this kind of butterfly. Wild flowers have been grown in some places to help other butterflies but the Lulworth skipper needs long grass and wild areas.Meadow browns, the country's most common species, also had the worst year on record. Some other kinds of butterflies also had a bad year.
However, in the short term many butterflies saw an increase in number in 2013 compared to 2012 levels.

Have you ever had the desire to wander the world and see what was out there? While some people prefer to stay in the comfort of their own home, others have been bitten by the travel bug and can't wait to explore the world. Exotic (异国的) places call to them. “Come to visit us and we will show you my mysteries,” they say.
Every year millions of people pack their suitcases or put on backpacks and flock to visit the seven continents of the world. They wander through the castles and museums of Europe, and the cities and natural wonders of North and South America. Some visit the vast exotic cultures of Asia, Africa and the Middle East. The great outback of Australia is a wonderland for those who go there. And a few lucky people even realize their dreams to visit the most mysterious continent on the earth—Antarctica.
Why do people want to explore the world? It gives them a better understanding about the earth and the people living on it. Should we save pandas? Even though the number of giant pandas has dropped to the point where they are considered seriously endangered, some have suggested that is not worth the efforts to continue trying to save the species. BBC naturalist,Chris Packham made this shocking statement to Radio Times Magazine,“It's not a strong species. Unfortunately it's big and cute and it's a symbol of the World Wildlife Fund (WWF). And we pour millions of pounds into panda conservation. I think we should pull the plug. Let them go.”
Fortunately, not many people share this extreme viewpoint. Instead of just allowing the species to become extinct, panda conservation efforts are in full force, and you can help! Why not “adopt” a panda at the WWF or Pandas International? Both sites raise money for giant panda conservation. You can also help raise attention to this endangered species. The following ideas are from Pandas International. Spread the word: share your passion to save the pandas.Sponsor or adopt a giant panda.Sign up for monthly donations to Pandas International, or another organization.Consider a project for your class, if you are a student.Or at your next celebration (birthday, holidays, etc. ), ask guests to make a donation to help pandas, rather than bring a gift.
There are only about 1,600 giant pandas left in the wild. One of the biggest reasons that giant pandas are dying out is the loss of habitat. Pandas rely on bamboo for food, and the plant is slow-growing. In their native lands of southeast Asia, many bamboo forests have been cleared. This drives pandas farther away in search of food. Many die of hunger before they can get to the next forest.
Personally, I don't think that something should be given up just because it is difficult. After all, the panda is not endangered as a result of natural selection. Its habitat has been destroyed by our own actions.
33.This passage is written to ________.
A.ask us to save pandas
B.prove that pandas can be saved
C.explain why pandas are dying out
D.help us know more about pandas
答案:A 主旨大意题。通读全文可知,作者告诉了我们一些怎么拯救濒临灭绝的大熊猫的方法,故可推断作者写这篇文章是为了呼吁我们拯救大熊猫。
34.What is Paragraph 2 mainly about?
A.The functions of Pandas International.
B.Effects people have made to save pandas.
C.Things to do for pandas as a student.
D.Things we can do to help pandas.
答案:D 主旨大意题。通读第二段,可知主要介绍的是一些我们可以做的拯救大熊猫的方法,故选D项。
35.According to Paragraph 3, people who want to protect pandas in southeast Asia should ________.
A.provide various kinds of food for pandas
B.let pandas kept in zoos back to forests
C.establish bamboo forests
D.adopt pandas and raise them
答案:C 细节理解题。根据第三段第三、四句“Pandas rely on bamboo for food, and the plant is slow-growing.In their native lands of southeast Asia, many bamboo forests have been cleared.”可知在东南亚,可以通过建竹林的方法来拯救大熊猫。

参考范文
Dear Editor,
I'm a middle school student named Wang Ping. Recently, we often have to buy presents for our classmates' birthdays, and sometimes, we are invited to their birthday parties in expensive restaurants, which caused us to think whether students should spend so much money for birthdays.
About this there are two different views. Some students think it provides us with a good chance to communicate with each other and develop our friendship, and besides, we can relax after hard work at school. However, some other students think it's a waste of money and time and can lead us to getting into the bad habit of trying to keep up with the Joneses, which has a bad effect on our growth and studies.
As far as I'm concerned, it's not easy for our parents to make money and keep us at school for education. So there is no need for us to do like that. We must treasure our parents' labor and put our hearts into our studies.
What do you think about it? I'm expecting your reply.
Yours,
Wang Ping
