Ideas about edu ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )cation are changing in the United States. Education today is not just a high school diploma (文凭) or a college degree. Many adults are not interested in going to college. They are interested in other kinds of learning. For them, learning does not end with a diploma. There are usually a large number of classes to choose from. Some adults learn new skills. Some take classes for fun or because the class will be useful for them. Conventional ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )wisdom says that hardship can make us old before our time. In fact, a new study suggests that violence not only leaves long term scars on children’s bodies, but also changes their DNA, causing changes that are equal to seven to ten years of premature aging.
Scientists measure ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )d this by studying the ends of children’s chromosomes(染色体), called telomeres, says Idan Shalev, lead author of a study published in Molecular Psychiatry.
Telomeres are specia ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )l DNA sequences which prevent the DNA in chromosomes from separating. They get shorter each time a cell divides, until a cell cannot divide any more and dies.
Several factors h ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ave been found to shorten telomeres, including smoking, radiation and psychological stresses such as being treated badly when young and taking care of a chronically ill person.
In this study, re ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )searchers examined whether exposure to violence could make children’s telomeres shorten faster than normal. They interviewed the mothers of 236 children at ages 5, 7 and 10, asking whether the youngsters had been exposed to domestic violence between the mother and her partner; physical maltreatment by an adult; or bullying. Researchers measured the children’s telomeres—in cells obtained by swabbing the insides of their cheeks—at ages 5 and 10.
Telomeres shor ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )tened faster in kids exposed to two or more types of violence, says Shalev. Unless that pattern changes, the study suggests, these kids could be expected to develop diseases of aging, such as heart attacks or memory loss, seven to 10 years earlier than their peers.
Shalev says ther ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )e is hope for these kids. His study found that, in rare cases, telomeres can lengthen. Better nutrition, exercise and stress reduction are three things that may be able to lengthen telomeres, he says.
The study confirms ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ) a small but growing number of studies suggesting that early childhood adversity imprints itself in our chromosomes, says Charles Nelson, a professor of pediatrics and neuroscience at Harvard Medical School.

SECTION B (2+2+3+3=10)
Directions: Read ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ) the following passage. Answer the questions according to the information given in the passage and the required words limit. Write your answers on your answer sheet.
We’re to ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ld that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, and dinner is the most enjoyable because it is a chance to spend time with the family. But what about lunch Few people take time to enjoy this midday meal. Most of us just rush right through it. They catch a quick salad, or buy a sandwich and eat at their computers. Sometimes, they just skip lunch.
The develop ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ment of the technology hasn’t done our eating habits much good, either. We’re often distracted (分心) by e-mail, social media, and 24-hour news. Even when we do sit down for lunch, we are more connected to our handy electronic devices than ourselves.
Unluckily, ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )long working hours can cause all kinds of health problems. Because of this, many developed countries have passed labor laws about the lunch break. These laws give workers the right to take a break during long work.
A study shows tha ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )t long lunch breaks are good for both individuals and society. It says that taking a lunch break can help one slow down and gain new ideas. A break from work allows us to think strategically. Especially, when we sit down at a restaurant and chat happily with workmates, we’re more likely to relax and be full of energy again.
Frank Partnoy, a for ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )mer Wall Street trader, says that bosses should encourage workers to take time off for lunch. However, some workers are unwilling to take time off for lunch. Partnoy’s suggestion makes skipping lunch difficult. Bosses could demand workers to fill out a form saying why they want to skip the meal.21教育名师原创作品
