66.Dear Professor Smith,
I am Li Hua, chairman of the student union of Guangming Middle School. Representing our school, I’m writing to convey my sincere appreciation to you for the lecture you gave us last week.
Through your lecture, we have learned that body language is one of the most effective methods of expressing our feelings. For example, smiling is the most universal expression of happiness. Looking away from a person means showing no interest in the person. However, not all cultures greet people in the same way. I do believe the knowledge will be very beneficial when we communicate with people from other countries.
Thank you again for your wonderful lecture.
Yours,
LiHua.
67. Meanwhile, Bishop was crazy and desperate. She would pull Russell up one step, only to see the water rise with them. Her nervousness was comforted by Russell’s funny behavior. Grabbing the banister, he counted the pictures on the wall. “Look, Darcy: one, two, three, four.” “That’s very good, Russ” Bishop said with tears rolling down her cheeks. It took them a good hour, but they finally made it up eight steps to the first small landing, then three steps to the second, and then a handful of steps more. She sat down beside him, and waited.
At around 6:30 p. m., Russell said, “Somebody’s downstairs.” Full of hope, Bishop called out, “Hello ! Hello ! Who’s there ” It was her neighbour, Hance Walters. Learning she was in trouble, Walters went to his house and fetched a boat. Bishop tried to bring her brothers outside. There, they were lifted into the boats. Todd and Russell were safe. They have not said much about the sufferings they survived, only saying that they wanted things to return to normal. “I don’t want no more hurricane” they both repeated.

(M) I’m John. Mark is my neighbor and best friend. All members in both of our families celebrate our birthdays together every year. We like to have fun together. Yesterday was Mark’s birthday and when I met him on our way to school, he invited me to go to his birthday party in the evening. I happily accepted. After school yesterday I bought a book which I remembered Mark had said he liked. When I went back home, Mom told me she had prepared a T-shirt as Mark’s gift. Carrying the gifts, I went to Mark’s home with my mom and dad. When we got there, Mark’s parents were preparing a birthday party scene in their garden. Many colorful balloons were hanging around. We all wished Mark a happy birthday, and he said he liked the gifts we gave him very much. Then we children began to play games while all the parents sat together and talked. After that, we had some snacks we liked. We all had great fun. Since we needed to go to school today, we left the party at around 9:00 pm. It was a truly happy day.

Slang is a popular, less official and often very current form of language. It is an important part of a living language and is constantly changing as language changes. Slang is often playful, direct and sometimes less respectful than the more official and traditional version of language. So now I'm going to lay it on you! To “lay it on” is American slang for “to tell” or “to explain.”
Slang can take many forms. For example, slang can be local to one city or area. In Washington, D.C. there is a whole set of slang to describe politics and business in the city. For example, the term POTUS stands for President of the United States. POTUS can often be found with his wife, FLOTUS, the first lady of the United States. “Inside the Beltway” is a popular expression that describes the area of Washington, D.C. The beltway is the large highway that circles the city.
The Internet has helped create a whole new kind of computer-related slang. An “angry fruit salad” is an expression that describes a website with too many bright colors. “Netiquette” is slang for correct behavior when using the Internet.
Young people often develop the latest slang. For example, to say Special English “rocks” or is “phat” means Special English is really great. A “kegger” is a party where beer is served. If something is “wack”, it is wild and crazy.
Different professions often have their own slang as well. For example, medical workers might refer to a complaining patient as a “gomer”. A “tough stick” is someone whose veins are difficult to find when he or she needs to have blood taken.
No matter how well you speak English, there are always new and interesting slang words to discover. There are entire dictionaries for describing slang. Many experts do not even agree on what is and what is not slang. Often slang words later become a part of officially accepted language. Official or not, slang is an energetic and exciting part of the American language that continues to change.
24.Which of the following is NOT true for slang compared with the official language
A.Playful. B.Direct.

Our wedding was about to begin. My throat was tight and my cheeks got red, but I didn’t care. I was ready to marry David Sanchez. We’re a “nontraditional” couple: getting married not at a church but in a bookstore that supports a charity to fight H.I.V. and homelessness.
“Kim! I could walk you down the aisle(走廊) if you like!” David’s father offered gently.
“I’m OK. But I appreciate that,” I said with a smile. And I was reminded, again, of my dad’s absence.
My father died of cancer six weeks ago. For the last two months, we tried to make him feel comfortable and loved as he departed from this world. He always told us that he didn’t like a funeral(葬礼) and insisted our wedding go forward as planned. But how could we honour him since the wedding would be the first time the family would gather after his death and some even didn’t know he was sick
During the ceremony, my dear friend Eva delivered a reading entitled “When Things Go Missing” by Kathryn Schulz. She paused and got everyone on the same page: “When we are experiencing it, loss often feels like confusion in the usual order of things. In fact, the entire plan of the universe consists of losing, and life amounts to a reverse(逆向的) savings account in which we are eventually robbed of everything.”
I felt the energy full of the room. Everyone was listening. By choosing to accept the pain, we knew what a wedding does to join two families and mark the next chapter for a couple. Loss became a compass that pointed us away from a fantasy and toward celebrating the difficult realities of life.
After rings were exchanged, fried chicken was served, our friends offered so many funny and touching toasts, and finally David sang “Married” on my father’s guitar. I felt joy filling all the holes in my soul. Celebrating my father’s life at our wedding made me grateful for all the time I had spent with him, because it all goes by so fast.

A.She got a compass as a wedding gift.
B.She enjoyed David’s promise for their marriage.
C.She received more sympathy from families and friends.
D.She recalled the days spent with her father and understood life better.
29.Why did Kim feel energy full of the room
A.Because she could keep from the pain.
B.Because she knew everyone was listening.
C.Because she got more courage for marriage and life.
D.Because she could read a piece of Kathryn Schulz’s works.
30.What do we know about Kim and David’s wedding ceremony
A.It was held at a church.
B.It was a touching and happy one.
C.Kim and David turned it into a funeral.
D.There was no other activity except reading.
31.Why did David’s father offer to walk the author down the aisle
A.To relieve her tension.
B.To welcome her to his family.
C.To play the author’s late father’s role.
D.To contribute something to the charity.

In Europe, many people make friends between their countries through town twinning. Town or city twinning means two towns in different countries agree and decide to become “twins” with a sister city relationship.
The people find pen friends in the twin town. They exchange newspapers and stamps. The school teachers discuss teaching methods with the teachers in the twin town.Officials visit the twin town for celebrations.Ordinary people travel to the twin town, too, but not very often if it is far away.
Sometimes, schools even exchange their classes for two or three weeks! For example, German middle school students study for a while at the school in their twin town in Britain, staying with British families. A few months later, their British friends come to study in Germany.

As Hurricane Ian bore down on Florida, many residents who decided to stay found themselves unable to leave.
When the water slipped in under the door of their home in Naples, Florida, it was just a sign that it was time to go.
It was around noon on Wednesday, September 28 last year and Darcy Bishop woke up her two brothers who had been resting after lunch. She pulled the wheelchair up to the oldest, Russell Rochow, 66. Her other brother, Todd Rochow, 63, was in his room, changing clothes. He could manage with a walker.
Both men had been born with disabilities, and their mental development was like that of a young child. But they found joy in their surroundings. Russell loved riding the bus and going to parks. Todd liked collecting cans at the beach and playing on the boat in the neighbor, Hance Walters’ home. Bishop, 61, was their lifeline, their little sister who had long felt a duty to keep them safe.
“We’ve got to get going!” she shouted to Todd. She went to open the front door. It would not move. The weight of the water on the other side had shut it tight.
She rushed to try the door to the garage, where Todd’s walker was stored. It, too, was stuck.
That’s when the house the three brothers shared began to flood.
The only way to go was up.
Bishop guided Todd to the stairs, and he grabbed the banister(栏杆). She helped him pull himself slowly up to the top where he waited in a chair.
But stairs were impossible for Russell, who could neither walk nor bend his stiff legs.
Bishop dragged on the belt around Russell’s waist, but he was nearly 77 kilograms. She tried every position possible, switching from pushing to pulling, and managed to get him up a few carpeted steps.
But the water followed.
Bishop called 911 and was told someone would come soon. But out the window she could already see furniture, boats and cars floating by.
