Do teenagers in small villages do chores at home How about the teenagers in big cities Here is the result of our survey.
We asked 4,000 teenagers in China several questions. Half of them come from big cities like Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou. The others are from small villages. We made a diagram (图表) of the result of our survey. Let's have a look at it.
We found out that teenagers from small villages do more chores than those from big cities. Maybe it is because they learn to be independent early. Our advice to parents in big cities is that parents should give their children some chores to do. Doing chores teaches teenagers to take care of themselves.

In western countries, many children do chores to get pocket money. They usually start to do this at the age of 10.
Students have to do homework and study for tests on weekdays, so they often do chores on weekends.
Young kids only do easy chores, so they don't get much money. But that's all right. Many of them only want to buy some candies. And candies are cheap! They help wash the dishes after dinner, take out the rubbish, and feed the family cat or dog.
When kids get older, they want to buy more things. They want things that are more expensive than candies. Then they have to work harder! They often wash the family car, cut the grass, walk the dog or cook dinner.
Doing chores is a good way for kids to learn new things. For example, they can learn how to use a lawnmower(割草机)or how to cook. Of course, their parents help them at first.

Students in primary and middle schools will have at least one lesson every week on basic household (家务)skills such as cleaning and cooking. Are household skills useful
Michael: By learning basic skills like cooking and cleaning, children can learn how to take care of themselves and live independently. Parents won't always be there to help their children with every problem they'll meet in their lives. They need to learn new things, solve problems and grow from their experiences. It is necessary for children to learn these important lifesaving (救命的) skills as early as possible.
Eliza: Many students have to study all day and don't have time to develop their interests. A household class can give them more chances (机会) to learn these life skills.
Jade: With all the classes, there is not enough time for household lessons. I think it is something that parents need to do at home with their children. They can let their children help around the house with cooking, cleaning, washing, planting, etc. Remember, school can't teach your children everything. They need you, too!
Linda: Schools should have cooking classes and teach children about their food—where it comes from, how to use the cooking tools properly and how to cook nutritious(营养丰富的)meals. A household class provides the knowledge(知识)and training which parents are unable to give their children.

Let's enjoy working!
This term, I took part in a series of labor activities in our school. I was happy that I learned a lot. In March, I learned to grow vegetables and plant trees on our school's farm. In April, I learned to repair things like electric fans and bicycles with the help of our teachers. In May, I learned to do much housework, such as making the bed, sweeping the floor and folding clothes.
I think the labor activities are not only educational but also useful. I'm sure the more life skills I have, the more independent I will be.
