Six Kittens Rescue, founded in October of 2018, is an all-volunteer organization that works to reduce the homeless and abandoned cat population in Brazos County. Its co-founder Mallori Girard says the event was designed to be an educational event for kids. It aims to inspire them to help rescue cats. Yesterday afternoon, about fifty kids went to the event. They took part in activities that included making blankets and toys for kittens, drawing up a list of events with educational sheets, and making shelters for homeless cats. Through these activities, kids learned that homeless cats need help. They were also encouraged to become better members of the community. That’s all for today’s program. Thank you for your listening.

Challenging as the work was, it was a glorious moment for me to be a volunteer in Hangzhou. I was totally impressed by the charm of different sports and the sportsmanship spirit within. As a volunteer, it would help if you are familiar with the rules of the game and wear a warm smile whenever you are needed for help.
Go ahead and sign up! I bet you’ll find it rewarding.

At the beginning of Grade Two, I joined the cross-country running team in our school.
When I came to the first practice, I was filled with optimism. But as the distance we ran in each practice gradually increased from three to four, to six miles, I realized with surprise that no matter how hard I tried, I wasn’t able to run as fast as others. In fact, I was one of the slowest on the team.
What was the point of putting myself through so much pain After the first few weeks, I wanted to quit.
Then we had our first cross-country meet.
When we started the race, I felt the great pressure of expectations sink onto my shoulders. And after a while I stopped running and struggled to walk up the hill. But then I heard my coaches shouting my name from the top of the hill. I felt confused and embarrassed; why were they cheering for me I was running terribly! As I tried my best to finish the race, I realized that my coaches didn’t care how fast I ran. Neither did my teammates. During the rest of the season, they were always on the sidelines of every race, cheering for me just as loudly as they’d cheered for the front runner.
From then on, I began to put my effort into supporting my teammates instead of focusing on my own performance. In that way, I celebrated my teammates’ victories as if they were my own; I felt their pain and exhaustion as if they were my own.
Cross-country running made me realize I don’t need to be the best to be successful in life. It taught me to value my relationships with people more than my relationship with my ego. It taught me to cheer for others even if I don’t know their names.
24.Why did the author want to give up after the first few weeks
A.He had much pain in his knees.
B.He didn’t perform well in long-distance running.

A.He lost himself in victories
B.He put more effort into his study
C.He received more support from his coaches
D.He started caring about his teammates
27. What did the author realize from his experience
A.The importance of team spirit B.The value of competition
C.The secret of winning a race D.The benefits of doing sports
C
When you set a foot outside of your door to drop trash, go to a social event or go for a walk, thoughts like “I hope I don’t see anyone I know” or “please don’t talk to me” may run through your mind. I’ve also said such things to myself. Sometimes the last thing you want to do is to talk with someone, especially someone new.
Why do we go out of our ways to avoid people Do we think meeting new people is a waste of time Or are we just lazy, thinking that meeting someone new really is a trouble
Communication is the key to life. We have been told that many times. Take the past generations, like our parents, for example. They seem to take full advantage of that whole “communication” idea because they grew up talking face to face while Generation-Y grew up staring at screens. We spend hours of our days sitting on Facebook. We send messages to our friends and think about all of the things we want to say to certain people that we don’t have the courage to do in reality.
Nowadays, we are so caught up in our little circle of friends—our comfort zone. We love it that they laugh at our jokes, understand our feelings and can read our minds. Most importantly, they know when we want to be alone. They just get us.
Holding a conversation with someone new means agreeing with things that you don’t really believe and being someone you think they want you to be—it is, as I said before, a trouble. It takes up so much energy, and at some point or another, it is too tiring.
But meeting new people is important. Life is too short, so meet all the people you can meet, make the effort to go out and laugh. Remember, every “hello” leads to a smile—and a smile is worth a lot.
28.What do we learn about the author
A.He likes to meet someone new. B.He feels stressed out lately.
C.He’s active in attending social events. D.He used to be afraid of talking to others.
29.What’s the problem of Generation-Y in the author’s eyes
A.They rely on the Internet to socialize. B.They are less confident in themselves.
C.They have difficulty in communicating. D.They are unwilling to make new friends.
30.Why do many young people avoid meeting new people
A.They think it troublesome. B.They are busy with their study.
C.They fear to disappoint their friends. D.They want to do meaningful work.
31.Why does the author write the text
A.To stress the importance of friends.
B.To give tips on how to meet new people.
C.To encourage people to meet new people.
D.To display the disadvantages of Generation-Y.
D
It is reported that endangered polar bears are breeding (繁殖) with grizzly bears (灰熊), creating “pizzly” bears, which is being driven by climate change.
As the world warms and Arctic sea ice thins, starving polar bears are being forced ever further south, where they meet grizzlies, whose ranges are expanding northwards. And with that growing contact between the two come increasing hybrids (杂交种).
With characteristics that could give the hybrids an advantage in warming northern habitats, some scientists guess that they could be here to stay. “Usually, hybrids aren’t better suited to their environments than their parents, but these hybrids are able to search for a broader range of food sources,” Larisa DeSantis, an associate professor of biological sciences at Vanderbilt University, told Live Science.
The rise of “pizzly” bears appears with polar bears’ decline: their numbers are estimated to decrease by more than 30% in the next 30 years. This sudden fall is linked partly to “pizzly” bears taking up polar bears’ ranges, where they outcompete them, but also to polar bears’ highly specialized diets.
“Polar bears mainly consumed soft foods even during the Medieval Warm Period, a previous period of rapid warming,” DeSantis said, referring to fat meals such as seals. “Although all of these starving polar bears are trying to find alternative food sources, like seabird eggs, it could be a tipping point for their survival.” Actually, the calories they gain from these sources do not balance out those they burn from searching for them. This could result in a habitat ready for the hybrids to move in and take over, leading to a loss in biodiversity if polar bears are replaced.
“We’re having massive impacts with climate change on species,” DeSantis said. “The polar bear is telling us how bad things are. In some sense, “pizzly” bears could be a sad but necessary compromise given current warming trends.”
32.Why are polar bears moving further south
A.To create hybrids. B.To expand ranges.
C.To contact grizzlies. D.To relieve hunger.
33.What enables “pizzly” bears to adapt to natural surroundings better than their parents
A.Broader habitats. B.Climate preference.
C.More food options. D.Improved breeding ability.
34.What does the underlined phrase “a tipping point” in paragraph 5 refer to
A.A rare chance. B.A critical stage.
C.A positive factor. D.A constant change.
35.What’s the main idea of the text
A.Polar bears are changing diets for climate change.
B.Polar bears have already adjusted to climate change.
C.“Pizzly” bears have replaced polar bears for global warming.
D.“Pizzly” bears are on the rise because of global warming.

Having good working relationships with your coworkers is important. Unfortunately, some coworkers can be rude, or unprofessional. It’s easy to get stressed and struggle with productivity when you’re suffering a bad work relationship. 36
One easiest way to avoid trouble is simply to avoid them when you can. Stay away from difficult coworkers if you don’t have to work with them directly. Limit your interactions. 37 When you do need to speak with them, keep the discussion brief but pleasant.
38 Depending on the situation, it’s healthiest to let go of your anger when a colleague acts out. Their bad behavior isn’t your fault. As long as it doesn’t interfere with your work, it’s not your problem. Instead of taking their behavior personally, ignore it and move on.
Fight a coworker’s negativity with your own optimistic perspective. Does your coworker seem to complain constantly 39 Your coworker will get the information if you wisely change the topic or offer an opposite positive point of view. Without someone to fuel their negativity, they’ll get bored and move on.
Understanding and empathizing with them makes it easier to get along. As you learn about your coworker, you’ll also gain insight into why they behave the way they do. 40 Your relationship may improve when you can empathize with their situation.
A.If so, build a positive attitude in response.
B.Try developing a few coping methods to help you.
C.Thankfully, there are ways to improve the situation.

第二节(共10小题;每小题1.5分,满分15分)
“Look on the bright side” is one of those 56 (suggest) that people always consider inspiring but less helpful. However, new research shows that finding something of interest in a terrible situation makes 57 easy for people to stop complaining. Besides, looking at a challenge with humor is a good method, 58 may even be helpful in preventing anxious people 59 feeling sad.
In a study published much 60 (early), researchers gave the participants (参与者) some photos that show negative situations. Then they would describe these photos according to 61 request of researchers. Those using humorous words to describe the photos 62 (find) to have fewer negative (负面的) emotions and more possibilities to go through a hard time in their life than those who described the photos 63 (direct).
So there appear to be no disadvantages to looking at difficult things in your life with humor and lightness. The conclusion from the study is that for those at higher risk of anxiety, humor can develop an ability 64 (control) negative emotions. What’s more, 65 (make) others around you smile can be an extra benefit of humor. Therefore, when you feel stressed and couldn’t concentrate your mind on what you are doing, find something that can make you laugh first.

My husband and I had purchased the piano so our son and daughter could take piano lessons. But I had a secret dream that I did not share with anyone: I wanted to learn to play the piano and so that I could sit on a piano bench and perform one day.
Days later, I passed our announcement board, which listed items for sale, various jobs, and at the bottom, someone was offering piano lessons.
My voice trembled (颤抖) when I called the number the next day. When the tutor named Melody learned that I was the student, she hesitated. She had never taught a busy adult learner, but she was willing to try if I was determined to learn.
When my first lesson ended as arranged, Melody opened the door to her next student, a six-year-old boy full of enthusiasm. Melody introduced us and told me his name was Jeff. “I’m going to learn to play the piano,” he told me. No doubts or insecurities got in the boy’s way. His enthusiasm struck me, and on my way home, I whispered, “I’m going to learn to play the piano.”
However, I wasn’t a star pupil. I didn’t have instant recall on how to read music. Getting both hands to cooperate was difficult and then I was introduced to the pedal (踏板). Maybe I had been just too psychologically stressed out. Consequently, Melody blamed me for not practicing enough. Therefore, I had to look at my tight schedule to see where I could make time to improve myself.
The following week, Melody told me I would need to participate in the December performance and that I had to play by memory. I would have one month to memorize two pieces and I hadn’t even seen them yet! I was in despair and wanted to give up. “It’s the conventional (依照惯例的) way,” Melody said to me in a firm voice, “and even Jeff is memorizing the pieces he is playing. Think why you came here!”
