Last year, I worked in a middle school near my mother’s house, and stayed with her for a month. During that time, I helped her do some housework and bought some food for her.
After the first week, I noticed that the food was eaten up very quickly. Then I began to keep an eye on my mom. To my surprise, I found that she would put some of the food into a paper bag and go out with it at about nine every morning. And finally, I decided to follow her. I saw her taking the food to the street children. She would also spend a lot of time talking and playing with them.
One day, I talked with a neighbor and found out that my mom was well-known in the area. The children were very friendly with her and even thought of her as their own mother. Then it hit me — why wouldn’t she want to tell me about it Was she worried that I would stop buying food if I found it out
When my mom got home, I gave her a big hug (拥抱). I told her she didn’t need to keep it a secret from me. And she told me something about the children. Some of them lived with an old lady in a small house. Others slept on the streets. For years, she was helping the poor street children by giving them food. After she told me everything, I was so moved by my mother’s selflessness (无私). She helped others in need without wanting anything in return! How great my mom was!

Volunteering helps others, but it can also help you. If you’re unhappy about something that’s happened — like a storm. Doing something about it can be a great way to deal with (应对) your feelings.
Volunteering also lets you see your own life in new ways. Sometimes it’s easy to worry about things like grades or get angry because you don’t have the most expensive gym shoes or the newest computer game. Volunteering lets you spend some time focusing on (关注) others for a while.

Volunteering is fun and meaningful, and it’s more than just showing up and having a good time. Here’s some advice on how to make the most of your voluntary work.
Be well-trained. Know what you’re doing as a volunteer. If you need some time to learn your job skills, take your time. 39. If you’re good at your work, it will be much easier to help others and you’ll have more fun.
Be open-minded (思想开明的). One of the really great things about being a volunteer is the chance to learn and experience new things. 40.
Don’t try to do everything by yourself. Work as part of a team to make sure everyone gets a chance to take part in and do the work or gets their fair share of work. 41. If you need some help, ask politely for it.
Be understanding. 42. Try your best to understand what others are going through, even if it’s something you’ve never dealt with yourself.
43. Treat others like friends, and they’ll do the same to you. Many people who volunteer meet new people with whom they want to make friends. You might just meet someone who becomes a friend for the rest of your life.
