the past continuous tense
过去进行时
过去进行时表示在过去某一时刻或某一时间段正在进行或持续的动作。
1.结构:be (was/were) + V.-ing
2.常和表过去进行时连用的时间状语: at this/that time yesterday;at 9:00 last night;then;while/when...;from 7:00 to 10:00 yesterday morning;from 2000 to 2003等。
e.g. I was writing a letter at this time yesterday.
From 2000 to 2003, he was teaching at Chun’an Middle School.

4. 过去进行时的句式:

肯定句 主语+ was / were+动词现在分词 +其他. They were playing basketball at that time yesterday.
否定句 主语+ was / were + not (wasn't / weren't) +动词现在分词+其他. Bob wasn't reading at five o'clock yesterday afternoon.

笔记
1.相同点:两者都表示过去发生的动作。
2.不同点:(1)一般过去时表示过去的时间里发生的动作,往往已经完成;
过去进行时表示过去某一时刻或时段正在进行的动作。
(2)一般过去时连用的时间状语:yesterday , last night, ago, the day before yesterday, in 2013, just now等。
过去进行时连用的时间状语:前面提到
e.g. He read a book last night. 昨天晚上他读了一本书。(读完了)
He was reading a story book at 8:00 last night.
昨天晚上8点他正在读故事书。(还没有读完)
一般过去时和过去进行时的区别

In the past, not many people could read or write, so people listened to stories. Some stories were popular, and they changed every time someone told them. The stories passed from generation to generation. Finally, someone wrote them down.
