Scientists have created a kind of amazing battery. The paper-thin batteries could one day become an environmentally-friendly option for powering smartphones and wearable electronic devices. The Singapore-developed batteries are made up of electrodes printed on both sides of a piece of cellulose paper. Once the battery has run out, it can be buried in soil, where it breaks down completely within a month.
In an experiment, the Singapore team demonstrated how a 4cm x 4cm square of paper battery could power a small electric fan for at least 45 minutes. Bending or twisting the battery did not interrupt the power supply. In another experiment using a 4cm x 4cm battery to power an LED, the scientists showed that despite cutting away parts of the paper battery, the LED remained lit, indicating that cutting does not affect the function of the battery.
The scientists think their paper battery could be integrated into devices such as smart phones that are already on the market, or biomedical sensors for health monitoring.
Professor Fan Hongjin from the research team said,“ Traditional batteries come in a variety of models and sizes, and choosing the right type for your device could be a troublesome process. Through our study, we show a simpler and cheaper way of manufacturing batteries by developing a single large piece of battery that can be cut to desired shapes and sizes without loss of its function. These features make our paper batteries ideal for integration in the types of devices that are gradually being developed.”
Professor Lee Seok Woo from the research team said, “We believe the paper battery we have developed could potentially help with the electronic waste problem, given that our paper battery is friendly to environment and does not require aluminum or plastic. Avoiding the packaging also enables our battery to store a higher amount of energy within a smaller system.”
8. What can be learned about the new batteries
A. They do no harm to the environment. B. They can break down in a week after use.
C. They can only be used for huge devices. D. They will replace ordinary batteries soon.
9. What may happen when the new batteries are bent
A. They will be useless immediately. B. They can still offer power as usual.
C. They will work for shorter time. D. They will become thinner than paper.
10. How does Professor Fan Hongjin feel about the future of the new batteries
A. Confident. B. Anxious. C. Doubtful. D. Indifferent.
11. Which is the best title for the text

If you live in a big city, you might see trees start budding even before spring officially arrives.
A new article published in the journal Science found that trees in urban areas have started turning green earlier than the rural trees due to cities being hotter and also having more lights.
“I found artificial light in cities acts as an extended daylight and causes earlier spring greening and later autumn leaf coloring,” author Lin Meng said. Meng is a researcher at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. Her research collected observations and satellite data from 85 cities in the United States between 2001 and 2014.“ I found trees start to sprout new leaves and turn green six days earlier in cities compared to rural areas,” Meng said.
While the early appearance of spring and longer growing seasons may not seem like a big deal, Meng said there were serious effects on humans and wildlife. For one thing, early budding plants are at risk of spring frost. And changes in the growing season could also lead to an earlier and longer flower season, meaning a higher risk of allergies for humans. Meng also thought that this could lead to a bigger problem if the trees become out of sync with the insects.“ That may result in food shortage and may affect insect development, survival and reproduction,” she said.
Despite the concerns, Meng said it wasn’t all bad news.“ If we have a longer growing season, trees would absorb more carbon dioxide (CO2) from the atmosphere,” she said. “ They’d have a longer period to do the cooling effect that can help reduce the heating effect in cities.” In terms of solutions, Meng said that cutting artificial light would reduce harm done to trees and that if light pollution was removed, early tree greening could be changed.
12. Which of the following may cause city trees to turn green earlier
A. The higher temperature. B. The reduced amount of lighting.
C. The shorter daytime. D. The later autumn leaf coloring.
13. What may the underlined word “sprout” in paragraph 3 mean
A. Lose. B. Reduce. C. Add. D. Grow.
14. What is paragraph 4 mainly about
A. The causes of early appearance of spring. B. The advantages of having a longer spring.
C. The harm of city trees turning green early. D. The ways of solving longer growing seasons.
15. What is a solution to early tree greening according to Meng
A. Planting more trees. B. Shortening the nighttime.
C. Making flower seasons longer. D. Reducing light pollution.
【答案】12. A 13. D 14. C 15. D

细节理解题。根据第二段“A new article published in the journal Science found that trees in urban areas have started turning green earlier than the rural trees due to cities being hotter and also having more lights.(发表在《科学》杂志上的一篇新文章发现,城市地区的树木比农村地区的树木更早开始变绿,因为城市温度更高,也有更多的灯光)”可知,温度较高可能导致城市树木提早变绿。故选A。
13题详解】
词句猜测题。根据画线词后文“new leaves and turn green six days earlier in cities compared to rural areas”可知,孟发现城市的树木开始长新叶、变绿的时间比农村提前六天。故画线词意思是“生长”。A. Lose.失去;B. Reduce.减少;C. Add.增加;D. Grow.生长。故选D。
【14题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第四段“While the early appearance of spring and longer growing seasons may not seem like a big deal, Meng said there were serious effects on humans and wildlife. For one thing, early budding plants are at risk of spring frost. And changes in the growing season could also lead to an earlier and longer flower season, meaning a higher risk of allergies for humans. Meng also thought that this could lead to a bigger problem if the trees become out of sync with the insects.“ That may result in food shortage and may affect insect development, survival and reproduction,” she said.(虽然春天的提早出现和更长的生长季节似乎不是什么大问题,但孟表示,这对人类和野生动物有严重影响。首先,发芽早的植物有春霜的风险。生长季节的变化也可能导致花季提前和延长,这意味着人类过敏的风险更高。孟还认为,如果树木与昆虫不同步,这可能会导致更大的问题。 她说:“这可能会导致食物短缺,并可能影响昆虫的发育、生存和繁殖。”)”可知,第四段主要讲的是城市树木过早变绿的危害。故选C。
【15题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段中“In terms of solutions, Meng said that cutting artificial light would reduce harm done to trees and that if light pollution was removed, early tree greening could be changed.(在解决方案方面,孟表示,减少人造光可以减少对树木的伤害,如果光污染被消除,可以改变早期的树木绿化)”可知,树木早期绿化的解决方案是减少光污染。故选D。

When it comes to selecting a hiking companion, cats are usually far down on the list. Unless, of course, your name is JJ Yosh. When he adopted Simon, JJ had big plans. He immediately started training the cat to become his sidekick (伙伴) through countless adventures. When they camped overnight, they slept in a shared sleeping bag.
There’s nothing Simon wouldn’t do to stay close to his favorite human! Everywhere they go JJ and Simon get plenty of attention from curious strangers.“ The reaction is usually amazement and surprise that I would be taking a cat into the back country, and that Simon would sit so gracefully on my shoulder like a parrot,” JJ said.
The cat’s owner hopes to encourage more people to train their pets to join them out in the world as well. “On top of getting outside, I want people to realize cats can be just as adventurous as dogs if given the proper training,” he said.
The scientists think their paper battery could be integrated into devices such as smart phones that are already on the market or biomedical sensors for health monitoring.
A. Scientists Predict the Future of Batteries.
B. The Best Batteries in History Have Been Made.
C. Ordinary Batteries and New Batteries Are Totally Different.
D. Scientists Make Batteries That Can Be Buried in Soil After Use.
D
If you live in a big city you might see trees start budding even before spring officially arrives.
