Harvard nutritionist shares 4 brain foods that will help your kids stay “sharp and focused”.
Homemade hummus
Legumes (豆类) are healthy, plant-based sources of iron, zinc, protein, omega-3s and fiber, benefiting brain development. Homemade hummus is a good way to include legumes into your child’s diet. It can be served in so many ways, such as a dip paired with apple slices, carrot sticks or sugar snap peas. Adding some color to your hummus can make it more appealing to kids. Think: a bright orange carrot hummus topped with a monster face made out of vegetables.
Salmon
Introducing your child to fish at a young age can increase their likelihood of enjoying it and eating low-fat, vitamin-rich proteins for the rest of their life. Salmon is soft and mild enough for young children, and is also a good source of vitamin B12 and omega-3s, which promote healthy brain development and happier moods.
Eggs
Whole eggs are an excellent source of brain-boosting vitamins A, D and B12, along with choline (胆碱). Choline is especially important for young children, as it has been shown to improve brain development and long-term memory. One study found that pastured eggs can have twice as much vitamin E and almost three times as many omega-3s as caged eggs.
Meatballs
Add some powerful plant-based fiber and nutritious vegetables to your child’s diet through meatballs. Start with a base of beans or ground turkey. Then add grated celery and flax seeds full of omega-3s. Of course, don’t forget your favourite spices. Cook and serve.
21.Which food can enhance brain development and happier moods
A.Homemade hummus. B.Salmon. C.Eggs. D.Meatballs.
22.What do these four foods have in common
A.They all have omega-3s. B.They all have low fat.

A. Those who want their kids to lose weight.
B. Those who desire their kids to be more powerful.

Researchers have found that men and women consumed 15 percent more calories when looking at their phones while eating. They also ate more fatty food. The groundbreaking study suggests that staring at a phone screen may distract diners from how much food they are actually eating.
“It may prevent the correct understanding of the brain over the amount of food ingested,”said researchers who filmed 62 volunteers eating alone.
The men and women, aged 18 to 28, were invited to help themselves to a choice of food – ranging from healthy options to soft drinks and chocolate – until they were satisfied. In three trials, the volunteers were recorded eating with no distractions, using a smartphone or reading a magazine.
On average, the volunteers ate 535 calories without the distraction of a smartphone but 591 when using a mobile.
Those in the sample who were classed as overweight ate 616 calories while using their phones. When in possession of their mobiles, the volunteers also consumed 10 percent more fatty foods. They also ate more when reading a magazine.
“Smartphone use during a meal increased calorie and fat intake,” said Márcio Gilberto Zangeronimoa, a lead author of the study – carried out at the Federal University of Lavras in Brazil and University Medical Center Utrecht in the Netherlands.
He added: “Tablets and smart phones have become the main ‘distracters”’during meals, even early in childhood, so it is important to pay attention to how this may impact food choices.”
“A distracter prevents the brain correctly understanding the amount of food ingested.”
The study is published in the journal Physiology And Behavior.

Almost every kid has the experience of losing a treasured belonging. So does 8-year-old Maya Zrihen. But what she did afterwards really sets her apart.
Maya has been collecting Junior Ranger badges(小护林员徽章)on family trips to national parks. "National parks are very beautiful, and I want to protect them, so that's why I'm a Junior Ranger," she said.
When the family first learned about the Junior Ranger program, they decided to take full advantage of it. Maya's mother believed that there are things children cannot learn from a textbook, but they can learn hands-on in the parks. So on holidays or at weekends, the family took Maya to different parks to complete various educational activities and earned badges. “In Washington, D.C., I visited all the monuments that we can get badges from," Maya said proudly to others.
In order to make Maya look like a real ranger, her mother purchased a hat for her to wear. Maya displays the badges she got on the hat while visiting parks. She is very proud of being part of this program. She also takes it upon herself to educate her friends about what she is learning in the parks and promises to care for them.
Last month, Maya and her family went to Dry Tortugas, a heavily visited national park in Florida. Maya was very excited to go there because it was the park she had always dreamed of visiting. In the park Maya picked up litter, planted trees and put up posters to call on visitors to protect wild animals. At the end of the day, Maya finished all the tasks and got a fancy badge from a park ranger. She considered this badge her favorite one so she put it on the most outstanding place of the hat. Then Maya and other junior rangers played happily in the woods of the park for a while.

A Weekend Trip
Last weekend witnessed a team building activity in the park near our school organized by the Communist Youth League with the purpose of improving team spirit and enhancing communication among team members. All the members of the Student Union participated in it.
There were various games, such as the message repeating, the beanbag throwing, trust fall, and the like. All members were immersed in a joyful and cooperative atmosphere.
The activity gave me a further insight into the fact that an efficient and excellent team needs a sincere and intelligent decision maker, and more importantly, a group of fantastic doers of tasks.
续写参考范文
The family were about to leave when Maya found her favorite badge lost. Noticing the blank position where the badge should have been, her minds turned blank, too. Maya managed to calm down to figure out the last place she saw it, but after which anxiety and nervousness replaced the calmness soon. She started to inquire everyone she met if he had seen a fancy badge madly. She combed everywhere, but in vain. It was the fact that the badge was nowhere to be seen. Black clouds enveloping her heart, Maya left the park with tremendous depression mixed with guilt.
Several days later, Maya received a parcel from a stranger. On unfolding the parcel, Maya ‘s attention was captured by the fancy badge as she had lost, beside which was lying a letter saying that the badge was picked up by a visitor and through the monitors the workers found the upset little Maya .She told this good news to her mother, and also a special idea. The next day! Maya gave the badge away to her teacher, saying that she hoped everyone could do something to protect such breathtaking and beautiful scenery ;as it was the nature that was everyone’s collective home ! Maya was really an outstanding girl!

【原文1】M: I’m in a hurry. Could I have a piece of apple pie and a coffee please
W: Certainly, sir. Would you like your pie served with cream or cheese
M: Oh, I’ll take it just as it is. I really need to watch my weight.
【原文2】M: I really like this pair but I can get them cheaper from an online shop, or even a supermarket.
W: Yes, but we’re professional. It’s best to get your glasses here, where your eyes were tested.
【原文3】M: Mom, have you seen my new white jeans
W: I put them in the washing machine. They were dirty. Your black ones are in the drawer and your blue ones are in the cupboard.
M: I’m next to the cupboard, so I’ll wear the ones in there.
【原文4】W: I miss the long hair I had when I was 13. I’m going to grow it out again.
M: Your hair grows fast, so it won’t take long to get it long again. But I really think you look better with short hair.
【原文5】W: That singer you like is performing at the stadium in January. Are you going
M: I’d like to, but the tickets are so expensive and I did see him in London and Birmingham.
W: You also saw him in Manchester. We went with you.
【原文6】W: We care about quality here, not just about doing enough work to get by. When you work at Trader Joe’s, you’re more than an employee. You’re like family!
M: In my family, we usually argue over things like whose turn it is to take out the trash. We also complain a lot when there’s no dessert. Is working here like that
W: OK... Let me give you a better idea. Working here is like being in a family in some ways. You know how children get punished when they don’t clean their rooms, or when they go out with friends before they finish their homework
M: Yes, I can relate to that.
W: Well, that’s more like how it is to work at Trader Joe’s. The employees are the children ... and I’m the mother.
M: Are you the only parent at this store I think I’d rather be adopted by someone else...
【原文7】M: I was reading about superfoods today. They are fruits, vegetables and other foods that are supposed to be extra healthy.
W: That’s interesting. Which foods are they I suppose rice is high on the list. We certainly eat a lot of that here in China.
M: No, it isn’t. Nor are noodles. But yogurt, fish and tomatoes are there.
W: Oh well, I suppose we eat plenty of them. Why are these foods so healthy
M: It’s said that they can reduce the risks of high blood pressure, heart disease and certain cancers.
W: Maybe I will start including them in our meals. Are there any foods on the list that we don’t have yet
M: Nuts and greens are something we already eat plenty of. And although our type of rice—the white kind—isn’t on the list, brown rice is.
W: Then I think we will switch to that to keep the family healthy. Superfoods sound like a very tasty way to keep fit.
【原文8】M: Can you tell me what happened this morning, Mrs Jones
W: Well, 2 hours ago, that was around 10:00 in the morning when I was doing the dishes. Then, soon after that, I was polishing the table. I thought I heard a noise, but I was really concentrating on the polishing, so I didn’t take much notice.
M: What happened next
W: I was cleaning the living room, around 10:15, when I heard someone upstairs. It sounded like they were looking for something in my cupboard. About two minutes later, someone ran down the stairs. I ran to the window. A man was getting into a car. Then he was driving away.
M: What time was this, Mrs Jones
W: 10:20. Then I called the police.
【原文9】M: I can’t believe this. I have been on the phone with my bank all day and they still haven’t fixed my problem.
W: Is it a credit card problem
M: Yes. My credit card information was stolen. When I got my bill in the mail, I saw there were many unfamiliar purchases on it.
W: That’s terrible. Did they take a lot of money
M: Yes, and I am very upset because the bank is not helping me quickly. I have talked to many different managers already.
W: Doesn’t the bank’s owner need to make the decision to give you your money back
M: No. I just have to prove that these purchases were not made by me.
W: I hope you can fix this problem soon. Something similar happened to my husband’s mother recently. She was tricked into giving away some important information over the phone.
M: I think the person who stole my information got it from the Internet. I bought a collection of movies recently. I won’t be doing that again unless the website is sure to be safe. It’s honestly my fault for being careless.
W: You can never be too careful. Well, your problem is inspiring me to look into protecting my account better. I think I can pay my bank more to help me.
【原文10】According to an article in The Telegraph, learning a foreign language is not only great for your resume and for traveling, but it will make you smarter and better at coming to a decision. The article refers to several studies from medical journals published by the top universities in the U. S. These studies have shown that the brains of people who speak more than one language function differently from those who only speak one language. There are three major benefits of speaking more than one language. First, you become better at performing more than one task at a time. Your memory improves and your ability to observe things gets better. You can still gain those benefits as an adult but not as strongly as a younger person could. At the same time, the more languages you know, the stronger those benefits become no matter how old you are.
Since several informed studies are mentioned in the article, it shows that the conclusions made about learning different languages are truthful. It is important to have different views when discussing a topic. The more scientific studies are repeated, the more accurate they are. If a scientist only tried their experiment one time, they cannot ensure the accuracy of their results.
