The Autumn Equinox is the 16th solar term of the 24 solar terms and the fourth solar term of autumn. As the 16th solar term of a year, it usually begins on Sept 23 and ends on Oct 8, dividing autumn into two equal parts. After that day, the location of direct sunlight moves to the south, making days shorter and nights longer in the northern hemisphere.
Originally, the festival of sacrificing to the moon was set on the Autumn Equinox day. According to historical records, as early as the Zhou Dynasty, the ancient kings by custom sacrificed to the sun on the Spring Equinox, and to the moon on the Autumn Equinox. But since it is not a fixed day in lunar August, there might be no full moon on the Autumn Equinox. During the festival, if there was no moon to make sacrifices to, it would spoil the fun. Thus, the day was changed to the Mid-Autumn Day.

Since the Autumn Equinox, most of the areas in China have entered the cool autumn. When the cold air southward meets the declining warm and wet air, rainfall is the result. The temperature also drops frequently. The ancient Chinese people divide the Autumn Equinox into three phases. In the first phase, the thunder moves away. Ancient Chinese believed that the thunder symbolizes the dominance of Yang energy. After the Autumnal Equinox, Yin energy strengthens against Yang, muting the loud cracks of the thunder. In the second phase, insects hibernate. As the temperature drops, the insects begin to hide in their holes sealed with fine soil to protect themselves from the chills. In the third phase, rivers dry up. Due to the dry weather, the rate of evaporation goes up, decreasing the water levels in lakes and rivers.

This solar term is also a busy season for the autumn harvest, ploughing and planting. Winter wheat has begun to be sown in North China, while the Yangtze River Valley and the vast southern region are busy harvesting late rice. However, the continuous rain during the autumn equinox perhaps become the main adverse factor affecting the normal progress of the farming.
Is the influence of the Autumn Equinox on farming positive or negative
The Autumn Equinox is a good time to smell and appreciate osmanthus fragrans and to enjoy chrysanthemums in full blossom. Furthermore, there are thousands of people in the world trying to make eggs stand on end. This Chinese custom has become the world’s game.In this season, crabs are delicious. Eating crabs helps nourish the marrow and clear the heat inside the body. "Eating autumn vegetables" on the Autumn Equinox is also a popular custom in the south of China. Qiucai is a kind of wild amaranth. Every autumn Equinox day, villagers will go to the field to pick autumn vegetables. Qiucai is taken back and made into soup with fish, named "Qiutang" (autumn soup). There is a verse about the soup: "Drink the soup to clear the liver and intestines, thus the whole family will be safe and healthy."
