(2014·安徽·D篇)
Should we allo ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )w modern buildings to be built next to older buildings in historic area of a city In order to answer this question, we must first examine whether people really want to preserve the historic feel of an area. Not all historical buildings are attractive. However, there may be other reasons—for example, economic(经济的) reasons—why they should be preserved. So, let us assume that historical buildings are both attractive and important to the majority of people. What should we do then if a new building is needed
In my view, new ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )architectural styles can exist perfectly well alongside an older style. Indeed, there are many examples in my own home town of Tours where modern designs have been placed very successfully next to old buildings. As long as the building in question is pleasing and does not dominate(影响)its surroundings too much, it often improves the attractiveness of the area.
It is true that there ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ) are examples of new buildings which have spoilt(破坏)the area they are in, but the same can be said of some old buildings too. Yet people still speak against new buildings in historic areas. I think this is simply because people are naturally conservative (保守的)and do not like change.
Although we have to ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ) respect people's feelings as fellow users of the buildings, I believe that it is the duty of the architect and planner to move_things_forward. If we always reproduced what was there before, we would all still be living in caves. Thus, I would argue against copying previous architectural styles and choose something fresh and different, even though that might be the more risky choice.

Some people make ar ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )t with paint, and others use pencil or clay(粘土). But Italian artist Maurizio Savini prefers to use bright pink gum—after it has been chewed.

How does he ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ) do it The process is a lot like working with clay. “I work the chewing gum when it is warm and shape it with a knife,”says Savini. Then, he puts a chemical onto each gum sculpture to make the gum stay in place.

“I've created 30 work ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )s totaling more than 35,000 pieces of gum,” says Marraccini. That's a lot of gum!

(2013·江苏·D)
Mark Twain has bee ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )n called the inventor of the American novel. And he surely deserves additional praise: the man who popularized the clever literary attack on racism.
I say clever becaus ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )e anti slavery fiction had been the important part of the literature in the years before the Civil War. H. B. Stowe's Uncle Tom's Cabin is only the most famous example. These early stories dealt directly with slavery. With minor exceptions, Twain planted his attacks on slavery and prejudice into tales that were on the surface about something else entirely. He drew his readers into the argument by drawing them into the story.
Again and again,in t ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )he postwar years, Twain seemed forced to deal with the challenge of race. Consider the most controversial, at least today of Twain's novels, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. Only a few books have been kicked off the shelves as often as Huchlebetty Finnn, Twain's most widely read tale. Once upon a time, people hated the book because it struck them as rude. Twain himself wrote that those who banned the book considered the novel trash and suitable only for the slums(贫民窟).“More recently, the book has been attacked because of the character Jun, the escaped slave, and many occurences of the word nigger. (The term Nigger Jim, for which the novel is often severely criticized, never appears in it ).”
But the attacks wer ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )e and are silly—and miss the point. The novel is strongly anti slavery. Jim's search through the slave states for the family from whom he has been forcibly parted is heroic. As J. Chadwick has pointed out, the character of Jim was a first in American fiction a recognition that the slave had two personalities,“the voice of survival within a white slave culture and the voice of the individual: Jim, the father and the man.”
There is much more. Tw ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ain's mystery novel Pudd'nhead Wilson stood as a challenge to the racial beliefs of even many of the liberals of his day. Written at a time when the accepted wisdom held Negroes to be inferior(低等的) to whites, especially in intelligence, Twain's tale centered in part around two babies switched at birth. A slave gave birth to her master's baby and, for fear that the child should be sold South, switched him for the master's baby by his wife. The slave's light skinned child was taken to be white and grew up with both the attitudes and the education of the slave holding class. The master's wife's baby was taken for black and grew up with the attitudes and intonations of the slave.
The point was d ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ifficult to miss: nurture(养育), not nature, was the key to social status. The features of the black man that provided the stuff of prejudice—manner of speech, for example—were, to Twain, indicative of nothing other than the conditioning that slavery forced on its victims.
Twain's racial to ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ne was not perfect. One is left uneasy, for example,by the lengthy passage in his autobiography(自传)about how much he loved what were called “nigger shows” in his youth—mostly with white men performing in black face—and his delight in getting his mother to laugh at them. Yet there is no reason to think Twain saw the shows as representing reality. His frequent attacks on slavery and prejudice suggest his keen awareness that they did not.
Was Twain a ra ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )cist Asking the question in the 21st century is as wise as asking the same of Lincoin. If we read the words and attitudes of the past through the “wisdom” of the considered moral judgments of the present we will find nothing but error. Lincoln, who believed the black man the inferior of the white, fought and won a war to free him. And Twain, raised in a slave state, briefly a soldier, and inventor of Jim, may have done more to anger the nation over racial injustice and awaken its collective conscience than any other novelist in past century.

She thought there was a need for new street maps of London and started working on a book of maps. She collected a lot of information. She walked along every street in London and wrote down the important buildings and even the house numbers. She kept the information about the streets on cards in small boxes. One day a box with cards of all the streets beginning with “Tr” fell out of her window. She found most of her cards, but some landed on the top of a bus and she never saw those cards again. When she sent everything to the painter, someone asked her, “Why isn't Trafalgar Square in your book?” It was because she had lost the card! She called her book A to Z. The first A to Z was in the shops in 1936 and sold very well. Now it is a popular book of London street maps. Besides the street names, it shows important buildings, government offices, museums, theaters and schools; parks and public gardens; sports facilities; train and underground stations.
Later Phyllis Pe ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )arsall returned to the streets of London to paint pictures of many of the city's famous buildings.

The curious child reached up to grab the wire of a hot kettle in the family kitchen and poured boiling water over her tiny infant frame.www-2-1-cnjy-com
Her mother Ruby t ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )urned round and, seeing Ammie horribly burned, called an ambulance which rushed her daughter to a nearby hospital. Twenty percent of Ammie's body had been burned and all of her burns were third degree. There, using tissue taken from unburned areas of Ammie's body, doctors performed complex skin transplants to close her wounds and control her injuries, an operation that took about six hours. Over the next 16 years, Ammie underwent twelve more operations to repair her body.
When she started s ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )chool at Maxwelton Primary at age four, other pupils made cruel comments or simply wouldn't play with her. “I was the only burned child in the street, the class and the school,” she recalled, “some children refused to become friends because of that.”
Today, aged 17, ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ) Ammie can only ever remember being a burned person with scars; pain is a permanent part of her body. She still has to have two further skin transplants. Yet she is a confident, outgoing teenager who offers inspiration and hope to other young burns victims.
She is a me ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )mber of the Scottish Burned Children's Club, a charity set up last year. This month, Ammie will be joining the younger children at the Graffham Water Center in Cambridgeshire for the charity's first summer camp. “I'll show them how to get rid of unkind stares from others,” she says. Ammie loves wearing fashionable sleeveless tops, and she plans to show the youngsters at the summer camp that they can too. “I do not go to great lengths to hide my burns scars,” she says, “I gave up wondering how other people would react years ago.”

Dear editor,
During the summer v ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )acation I visited some places of interest in Xi'an. A famous old tower built in the Song Dynasty caught my eyes. There are many beautiful pictures on the walls of the tower, which have great artistic value. I am worried about it because some of the pictures are being damaged by some tourists. And air pollution also damages the pictures. The carbon dioxide from the tourists' breath is polluting the pictures. Therefore, I suggest we take steps to protect the old tower and pictures. Firstly, we should fix glass walls in front of the pictures. Secondly, we'd better limit the number of the tourists. Finally, building a website is also a good idea, where people can appreciate the tower and pictures.21教育网
