During a decline in tourism, one national park in Thailand has seen a dramatic rise in “visitors” recently. So many are the hermit crabs(寄居蟹) flooding into the otherwise empty beaches of Koh Lanta that shells(贝壳) for them to live in have become in short supply.
The Thai government moved quickly to ease the housing shortage, launching a public appeal for empty shells that netted over 200 kg. On December 5 these were distributed around the park in a ceremony.
Hermit crabs rely on shells to protect their soft bodies, moving to larger shells as they grow. On Koh Lanta and the surrounding smaller islands, their rapid increase seems to be a natural phenomenon, rather than directly related to the absence of tourists. But the shortage of shells may be man-made: pretty ones have long been gathered to be sold as goods. Crabs had begun to make do with potential death-traps such as plastic caps and bottles.
The shell drive was part of a government initiative to “regain the balance of nature”. “I have instructed all national parks to do whatever it takes,” says Varawut Silpa-archa, the minister for natural resources. His inspiration comes from the pause in tourism brought on by COVID-19.A ban on international visitors and the closure of national parks have helped nature recover, bringing endangered leatherback turtles back onto Thai beaches. In the coastal provinces of Phang Nga and Phuket, turtles have laid the largest number of eggs for 20 years.
The government has decided to try to copy the short break forced on it by COVID-19 in future. From now on, all national parks will be required to close for a short period during the off-season and to limit the number of tourists through a reservation system when they are open. Although such restrictions mean reduced earnings from tourism in the short term, in the longer run more parks may help to keep the tourists coming.
6.What happened to the beaches of Koh Lanta recently
A. They got flooded by seawater. B. They became completely empty.
C. They were packed with hermit crabs. D. They saw a constant stream of tourists.
7.What contributed to the housing shortage for hermit crabs
A. Natural disasters. B. Human activities.
C. Their preference for bottles. D. The government’s involvement.
8.Which of the following can best replace the underlined word “initiative” in Paragraph 4
A. advocacy. B. activity. C. method. D. Upgrad.
9.Why are turtles mentioned in Paragraph 4
A. To warn turtles are dying out.
B. To prove beaches are their ideal habitats.
C. To stress ecological diversity of Thailand.
D. To illustrate the birth of Varawut’s inspiration.
10.Which of the following can be the best title for the text
A. Developing Economy or Protecting Animals
B. Closing National Parks or Drawing More Visitors
C. Governments Are Responsible for the Balance of Nature
D. Authorities Help to Find Shelters for Homeless Hermit Crabs

Last year, wildfire spread through Boulder, Colorado. It wasn’t a hot summer day. It wasn’t a forested neighborhood. It was winter in the suburbs (郊区). More than 1,000 homes and buildings burned.
Large parts of the country that don’t have wildfires are now at risk. They include nearly 80 million homes and buildings. That’s what new data shows. Over the next 30 years, the risk will only grow. The group First Street Foundation created a program called Fire Factor. People can go to a website to learn what their wildfire risk is in 2022 and in 2052. Right now, about 16% of Americans live in risky places. By 2052, that will go up to 21%.
California will likely suffer a lot from wildfire. That’s partly because it is so big and partly because of its weather. So California will be on the top of the at-risk list. But nearly half of all at-risk Americans in 2052 will live in the southern half of the U.S. The South will be home to the largest number of people at high risk: 32 million. States like Texas, Florida, Oklahoma, and North and South Carolina will be “in the line of fire,” so to speak, and so will southwestern states like Arizona and New Mexico.
People are doing many things to make fire risk worse. They are moving to places where wildfire is a natural yearly event. They are building homes right next to plants and trees that can burn. Climate change has increased heat and dryness. That means any spark (火花) at any time can cause a big fire.
As with many climate threats, wildfires put minorities (少数群体) at the greatest risk. By 2052, about 44% of all Native Americans will live in places at major risk from wildfire. Nearly 1 in 4 Hispanics will. People who don’t speak English or own cars will have a harder time learning about and getting away from a fast-moving fire.
11.What problem did Boulder have last year
A.Strange weather. B.Huge loss of forests.
C.Widespread wildfires. D.A rapid drop in populations.
12.What does the new data show
A.About 16% of Americans are safe now.
B.The risky areas of wildfire are increasing.
C.The risk of wildfire will be lowered in 2052.
D.Nearly 80 million homes are burnt down by wildfire.
13.Which of the following will be the most dangerous in 2052
A.Florida. B.South Carolina. C.California. D.New Mexico.
14.What is paragraph 4 mainly about
A.Reasons why wildfire risk is worse.
B.Dangers humans may face in the future.
C.Actions taken by humans to prevent fire.
D.Suggestions for self-protection in wildfire.
15.How many Hispanics will live in risky places by 2052
A.About 16%. B.About 21%. C.About 25%. D.About 44%.
第二节 阅读下列短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项
Advice for High School Students
As a person who is graduating from high school very soon, I have some suggestions for students in high school or students who are soon going to be high school students. 16 I am sure others can benefit from reading them and will not make similar mistakes like me.
17 Do not value first impressions highly. Don’t dismiss a person or an idea too early just because you immediately get a bad impression. You will miss many opportunities because of that. Although something seems bad at the first impression, it does not mean it is bad all the time. Try to give everything a fair chance.
Don’t try to please everybody. There is no way you can please everybody or get everybody to agree with you. 18 It is a huge waste of time.
Have respect for authority. No matter how much you may dislike them, just remember that teachers and parents care about you and they are only doing their jobs. 19 Don’t argue with them and just obey them.
Realize a high school is not the real world. The real world isn’t a closed environment. 20 What is rewarded in high school such as popularity and agreement is different from what is rewarded in the real world. If high school isn’t working out for you, you may find yourself better at handling the real world.
A. Do not be too quick to judge. B. It is a free society where people accept responsibility for their actions. C. Listen to their advice and consider it carefully. D. Many of these are based on regrets that I have. E. Don’t spend any effort trying to please others who will never like you.

When I first entered university, my aunt, who is an English professor, gave me a new English dictionary and advised me to use it. I was 21 to see that it was an English-English dictionary, also known as a monolingual(单语的) dictionary. Although it was a dictionary intended for non-native learners, none of my classmates had one and, to be honest, I found it extremely 22 to use at first. I would 23 words in the dictionary but still could not fully understand the meanings. I was used to the 24 English-Chinese dictionaries, in which the words are 25 both in English and Chinese. As I 28 ,there is, in fact, often no perfect equivalent(对应物) between two 29 in two languages. Therefore, she insisted that I read the definition of a word in a monolingual dictionary when I wanted to get a better 32 of its meaning. Gradually, I have come to see what she 33 .
Using a monolingual dictionary has helped me in another important way. This dictionary uses a(n) 34 number of words, around 2,000,in its definitions. When I read these definitions, I am 35 exposed to the basic words and learn how they are used to explain objects and ideas. Because of this, I can express myself more easily in English.

Ⅳ.语法填空(共10小题;每小题2分,满分20分)
阅读下列短文,在空白处填入1个适当的单词或括号内单词的正确形式。
There are different kinds of customs in the world, which can teach us about the cultures of different countries. For instance, if you are to attend a wedding ceremony in India, you are to have a 36 (complete) new experience different from that in China. One of the most 37 (impress) scene is the bridegroom's entrance on a beautiful white horse. Another is the part when the bride's father proudly led his daughter to her husband. 38 our two cultures are so different, the smiling faces are the same. The couple would join hands and walk around a small fire and make a different promise about 39 they were going to support each other and live together happily. If one day you go to Brazil, you simply must seize the chance 40 (take) part in the Carnival held annually. People in Brazil would take a week 41 for the happy occasion. A group of around 20 Brazilian dancers and a band in fancy costumes were standing in the street, some of whom 42 (carry) flags blowing in the wind. Then there was 43 explosion of bright colors and lively music, and the group jumped into action. The band started playing an 44 (energy) samba beat, the dancers twisted and turned, and the crowd began to cheer, clap and sing. The whole group would march down the road, 45 (dance) all the way. You would be so caught up in the party fever that you could hardly notice time fly by!

参考答案:

21. C解析考查形容词及语境理解。worried“焦虑的”;sad“伤心的”;surprised“吃惊的”;nervous“紧张的”。
difficult“困难的”;interesting“有趣的”;important“重要的”;practical“实用的”。作者开始使用英英词典,不习惯,且下文“but still could not fully understand the meanings”提到并不能完全理解意思,应是感觉用起来“很难difficult”。故选A项。

Dear friends,
I’d like to share my own learning experience with you, as I hope it can be useful to you.
First of all, do more reading and writing. Reading is the key to opening your eyes, while writing is a helpful way to make good use of what you have learned. Besides, make a reasonable study schedule. Though study comes first, you need relaxation as well. In order not to be tired, I have been actively taking part in after- school activities. By doing so, I can spare time to develop a strong social ability. Last but not least, I prefer studying by myself, which gives me the chance to succeed in solving hard problems.
In a word, just remember that developing your own learning style is the best.
Yours,
Li Hua
