began playing football as a young child and he is known today as
one of England’s greatest players. But Bobby’s career was not

Read&answer
Why does the author say “at any sporting event, you face two opponents”
Why was Monti awarded the Pierre de Coubertin Fair Play Trophy
Would you do the same if you were Monti Why or why not
Answers:
Because on the one hand, sportspeople have to compete with their fellow players, and on the other, they must compete with themselves. But in both cases, they must make the right decisions to play fair and with dignity.
Answers:
Monti helped a British competitor who had broken a part of his bobsleigh by lending him the same part of his own. It was a remarkable, unselfish decision, which sets an example to us all.
Answers:
Yes, I would do the same as Monti because as an athlete, I would feel responsible to demonstrate good sportsmanship, which is also in the spirit of the Olympic Games. Besides, as I would have to live with my decision, I would feel good because I played fair and helped a fellow athlete.
We all know what it is like to want to win and most of us know what it is like to lose. More often than not, winning has the victor walking on air, lost in the glory of the moment, while the loser is left with a bitter taste and a feeling of failure. Almost nobody likes to come second, and sometimes it is difficult to keep everything in perspective. Modern society honours winners and successful sportspeople quickly become celebrities, admired by all.

However, there are ways to win and ways to lose. Whether you come first or last, it is important to remember that at any sporting event, you face two opponents:your fellow competitors and yourself. At the finish, your competitors will walk away but you will have to live with your decisions. A true sportsperson will make the right decisions for the right reasons and not worry about failure. There is an old and very wise saying, repeated many times, “Win with humility, lose with grace, and do both with dignity.”
In praise of such acts of sportsmanship, the International Fair Play Committee decided to award the Pierre de Coubertin Fair Play Trophy, in 1964. Providing clarification in conversation

Take …as an example.
Conduct a dialogue about sportsmanship. Remind them to read the tip of “Providing clarification in conversation” on page 24.
A: When it comes to sport, winning isn’t everything. It’s about two sides making sure they respect the rules of the game and each other.
B: Yes, playing by the rules shows great sportsmanship. But for me, sportsmanship covers one essential aspect—the spirit of friendship between players.
A: So, you feel that opponents should focus on being friendly
B: Not exactly. When I say that, I mean they must be respectful to each other before, during and after the game. How players treat each other not only reveals who they are as sportspeople, but also who they are in general. By treating other players with respect, it builds a positive spirit of friendship among them.
A: I see. In my opinion, working hard is certainly another important aspect. Take Hungarian swimmer Katinka Hosszu as an example. Although she did not manage to achieve very good results at the 2004 and 2012 Olympics, she never gave up but instead continued to work hard and improve at each competition. Then, at the 2016 Games she won three gold medals and broke two records—the Olympic record for the 200-metre individual medley and the world record for the 400-metre individual medley.
B: What an amazing story! Hosszu’s experience is a good example that illustrates the connection between hard work and good sportsmanship. It is through hard work that sportspeople improve their skills and inspire many sports fans, young and old.
What is good sportsmanship
Write an essay about sportsmanship. Use your ideas from part C and the information in parts A and B to help you.
Planning your writing
Learning about the structure
Introduce the topic of sportsmanship and state the main idea of your essay. Remember to take a clear stand on sportsmanship.
When writing an essay about sportsmanship, you can follow the structure below.
State the topic in 2~3 sentences. The last sentence of the paragraph should lead to the paragraphs below.
Develop the body of your essay by giving your understanding of sportsmanship in detail. Use examples to support your opinion where necessary. You can also include an opposing opinion and state why you disagree.
You can organize this part in two to three paragraphs to express your ideas. At the beginning of each paragraph you should write a topic sentence of the paragraph. Then complete the details.
Sum up your opinion by reminding the reader of what you have written. Rather than repeating the exact words, express your main idea in a different way.
Restate your ideas in other words. You also can show your wish.
Learning about writing techniques
Use transitional statements to conclude what you have written and introduce what you will write next, which will make your essay flow more smoothly. For example, after arguing that some people believe winning is all that matters, you can move on to an opposing idea: Though winning is very important in sport, I believe that …
Sport is not only about winning, but also about sportsmanship. People may have different understandings of sportsmanship, which covers several aspects. For example, one aspect of good sportsmanship expects that competitors will play by the rules of the game to achieve the goals they strive for. However, to me, sportsmanship is about the spirit of friendship between players as well as hard work.
The spirit of friendship between players is enhanced when they are respectful to each other before, during and after the game. It shows that they value their opponents more than winning against them. The way players treat each other not only reveals who they are as sportspeople, but also who they are in general. By treating other players with respect, both on and off the field, a positive spirit of friendship develops among them.
Furthermore, for athletes, sportsmanship also means they continue to work hard to improve and achieve sporting excellence.
One example of this is Hungarian swimmer Katinka Hosszu, who took part in three Olympic Games in 2004, 2012 and 2016. Although she did not achieve good results at the 2004 and 2012 Olympics, she didn’t give up. Instead, she worked harder after each setback and kept improving. Finally, at the 2016 Games she won three gold medals and broke two records—the Olympic record for the 200-metre individual medley and the world record for the 400-metre individual medley. Hosszu’s story has made her an example of how working hard in the face of challenges is an important part of sportsmanship.
In summary, winning in sport is not everything. It is even more important for sportspeople to treat their opponents respectfully and work hard. In other words, good sportsmanship is about being the best one can be, both as an athlete and as a person. This way sportspeople serve as role models and inspire millions of sports fans from across the world.
