Living and doing experiments in space, exploring the moon and Mars, reaching out into deep space with giant telescopes... These space missions may no longer be surprising. What are the next steps for space exploration NASA’s recent announcements may give us a hint.

In late January, NASA announced that it had partnered with another US agency to build nuclear thermal rocket engines (核热火箭引擎).
With the current technology, a trip to Mars will take about seven months – the journey is about 480 million kilometers, according to NASA.
“Reducing transit time (航程时间) is a key component for human missions to Mars, as longer trips require more supplies and more robust (稳健的) systems,” NASA said in a press release.
…released on Jan 10 also revealed some exciting plans. As the agency’s lunar operations proceed, scientists wish to build an oxygen pipeline at the moon’s South Pole.
The agency also aims to explore other places in the solar system.

What advantage would nuclear engines have over the current technology
A. They would be more eco-friendly.
B. They would shorten travel time.
C. They would be more cost-effective.
D. They would be safer and more stable.
Para 3: With the current technology, a trip to Mars will take about seven months – the journey is about 480 million kilometers, according to NASA. Although there is no estimated time for a trip with nuclear engines, such rockets would lead to a shorter time for space travel, thus reducing risk for astronauts, according to The Guardian.
2. What is the purpose of building an oxygen pipeline at the Moon’s South Pole
A. To explore sources of oxygen. B. To reduce oxygen consumption.
C. To carry oxygen to the lunar base. D. To produce oxygen for astronauts.
Para 5, line 3: The 5-kilometer pipeline is designed to transport oxygen from a production source on the moon to the future lunar base where astronauts live. It would be both constructed and repaired by robots.
3. What do we know about Titan
A. Its surface temperatures are high.
B. It has seas and lakes of methane.
C. It has a thin atmosphere and low gravity.
D. It’s the largest moon in the solar system.
Para 6: The agency also aims to explore other places in the solar system. Designs for a space plane called TitanAir have recently been unveiled. It aims to investigate Saturn’s largest moon Titan – an icy world whose surface is completely obscured (遮蔽) by a golden atmosphere. The plane will “land on the seas of Titan like a flying boat – except ‘boat’ implies water, and on Titan the lakes are made of methane (甲烷)”, announced NASA. The agency added that flying on Titan would be relatively easy thanks to its low gravity and thick atmosphere.
