Fraser Island, off the east coast of Australia, is an amazing sight. Waves of clear water crash onto the white sandy beaches. The people who first lived there called it K’gari. It means paradise(天堂), and that’s exactly what it is.
Fraser Island is the World Natural Heritage(世界自然遗产)because of its unique natural surroundings. 1 It has more sand than the Sahara Desert. Huge sand dunes(沙丘) move slowly across the island with the wind. In the valleys between the sand dunes are freshwater lakes. 2

There are no roads on Fraser Island. 4 Even airplanes land on the sand. It’s described as one of the most beautiful drives in the world. If you plan on staying overnight, you must camp out in a tent, as there are few places to stay on the island. 5

Antiquities(文物) are ancient objects and artworks. Many people visit museums to view antiquities. They enjoy seeing these relics of the ancient world as a way of understanding past cultures and sometimes connecting with their own heritage.
Museums get works to show from many different sources. Sometimes they buy them. Other times they receive donations. Today there are strict guidelines forbidding art that has been stolen from other countries. However, antiquities that have been at museums for many years or even centuries may have arrived there by dishonest means. Now, some countries say that museums have a duty to return these antiquities to their original locations.
Should museums return the antiquities Experts disagree. Malcolm Bell says yes. Bell is a professor of art at the University of Virginia. He says, “Many antiquities and works of art have special cultural value for a particular community or nation. When these works are taken from their original cultural setting, they lose their context and the culture loses a part of its history.”
According to Bell, a country’s request for the return of an antiquity “usually has a strong legal basis.” “It was exported (出口) illegally, probably also dug out illegally, and is now stolen property (财物).” He called the return of antiquities “an expression of justice”.
James Cuno says not always. Cuno is the president of the J. Paul Getty Museum, an art museum in Los Angeles. Cuno agrees that museums have a legal duty to return illegally exported antiquities. However, he doesn’t support the return of works which were got legally. “Land held today by a given nation-state(单一民族独立国家) in the past likely belonged to a different country...even if one wants to return those stolen works of art, where will one do so Which among the many countries, cities, and museums that own parts of a work of art should be the home of the returned work ” Cuno believes that museums should collect art from the world’s various cultures. This should be done “through buying or long-term loan (长期借用) and working together with museums and nations around the world.”
This debate is far from over. As a complex question with no easy answer, the issue requires more study.

The Archaeological Ruins of Liangzhu City(良渚古城遗址) in Hangzhou, pointing to an established Chinese civilisation 5,000 years ago, have been added to the World Heritage List. Every Chinese child is taught at school that the country’s civilisation is 5,000 years old, but proving this beyond doubt has been a problem.
Now, a jade artifact(玉器)named “King of Cong”, found in the Liangzhu City ruins in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, has provided an answer. According to Radiocarbon Dating(放射性碳定年法),the 6.5kg object is 5,300 years old. It is one of the largest objects among all Cong from Liangzhu. The piece has now won greater global recognition.
However, the site has far more than just things made of jade. The main area, spreading over 14.3 square kilometers in the Yuhang area of Hangzhou, includes not only a city’s ruins but 11 dams and several cemeteries(墓地), all about 5,000 years old. Archaeological facts show that people lived in Liangzhu for about a thousand years.
“The Archaeological Ruins of Liangzhu City(3300—2300 BCE) show an early state with a unified belief system based on growing rice in the late Neolithic Age in China(中国新石器时代晚期), ”the UNESCO World Heritage Committee said. “These ruins are an extremely good example of early city civilisation expressed in town planning, a water conservation system and a social order which can be seen in where and how people were buried in cemeteries within the ruins.”
According to studies led by Liu Bin, director of the Zhejiang Provincial Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology, the inner part of the ancient city ruins covers 2.8 square kilometers, about four times the area of the Forbidden City in Beijing, and the outer city spreads over 3.5 square kilometers. Liu said it was the biggest city ruins site of its time found in China, and was also one of the largest cities of its day in the world.

How does a place become a World Heritage Site (世界遗产保护区) It takes a lot of people to decide.
First, if a country wants one of its places to be on the World Heritage List, it has to ask the UNESCO. The place must be important and special. The UNESCO put the Great Wall on the list in 1987 because, it said, it was a great part of Chinese culture and beautifully made to go with the land. When a country asks, it must also make a plan for taking care of the place.
Second, the UNESCO World Heritage Committee talks about different places and decides whether to put them on the list. The committee meets every June. Many experts help the committee to decide.
Third, after a new place goes on the list, the UNESCO gives money to help keep it looking good. If a place is in serious danger, it may be put on the List of World Heritage in Danger. The UNESCO gives special care and help to those places.
Then, countries have to give the UNESCO regular reports about places on the list. If the UNESCO thinks a country isn’t taking good enough care of a place, the site will be taken off the list.
