阅读下列短文,从每题所给的 A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳选项。
A
Donna Strickland was awarded the 2018 Nobel Prize in Physics jointly with Arthur Ashkin and Gerard Mourou. It was the first time in 55 years that a woman had won this famous prize, but why did it take so long We look at five other pioneering female physicists—past and present—who actually deserve the prize.
Jocelyn Bell Burnell
Perhaps the most famous snub(冷落): then-student Bell discovered the first radio pulsars in 1967, when she was a PhD student at Cambridge. The Nobel Prize that recognized this landmark discovery in 1974, however, went to her male supervisor, Antony Hewish. Recently awarded a 2.3 million Breakthrough Prize, which she gave away to help under-represented students, she joked to The Guardian, “I feel I've done very well out of not getting a Nobel Prize.”
Lene Hau
Hau is best-known for leading the research team at Harvard University in 1999 that managed to slow a beam of light, before managing to stop it completely in 2001. Often topping Nobel Prize prediction lists, could 2023 be Hau's year
Vera Rubin
Rubin discovered dark matter in the 1980s, opening up a new field of astronomy. She died in 2016, without recognition from the committee.
Chien-Shiung Wu
Wu's “Wu experiment” helped disprove the “law of conservation of parity”. Her experimental work was helpful but never honored, and instead, her male colleagues won the1957 Nobel Prize behind the study.
Lise Meitner
Meitner led groundbreaking work on the discovery of nuclear fission. However, the discovery was acknowledged by the 1944 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, which was won by her male co-worker, Otto Hahn.
21. When was the discovery of radio pulsars recognized by the Nobel
A. In 1944. B. In 1967. C. In 1974. D. In 1980.
22. Which woman is most likely to win a Nobel Prize later according to the text
A. Lene Hau. B. Vera Rubin. C. Donna Strickland. D. Jocelyn Bell Burnell.
23. What do we know about the five other females
A. The five female scientists did well in chemistry.
B. Vera Rubin had opened up a new field in geometry.
C. Lise Meitner's teacher won a Nobel Prize for her work.
D. The five female scientists haven't been awarded Nobel Prize.
B
Since I was born and brought up in a rural town, I have a great interest in nature. Having the chance of studying abroad in my second year at college, I decided to go to Canada just because I wanted to see the beautiful phenomena there. So after I finished the study, I went to Yellowknife in the Northwest. I clearly remember the sixth night in Yellowknife. Suddenly my host mother came to my room around 8 p. m. and told me to change clothes and go outside quickly carrying her camera.
The northern lights were flickering(闪烁) in the sky! I was amazed and just stood there with my mouth open. I forgot to take pictures of the mysterious lights.
Since that night, whenever it was sunny, I went outside at night and looked at the sky. It was so cold that my hands and feet were numb(失去知觉的) with cold. Actually, the time of my being able to be out was limited. I had to bring her camera back to the house in one hour at most, for the camera was going to be broken because of the cold temperature.
As I took pictures of the northern lights, I came to find a characteristic movement of the lights. They first appear in the north part of the sky and then they come down to the south. After that, suddenly, they come in the middle of the north and south only for a while, which is the time when the best northern lights can be seen. Since it is only a few seconds for the northern lights to come down to the middle of the sky, it is very hard to get good pictures.
The stronger the sun acts, the better and stronger northern lights flicker in the sky. That's because they occur from the collision(碰撞) between atmospheric gases and solar wind. Much more solar wind comes to the earth when the sun is active, leading to the best northern lights.
24. Why did the author forget to take pictures
A. His host mother didn't remind him. B. He was shocked by the wonderful sights.
C. He lost all the feelings in his hands and feet. D. The lights flickering disappeared after a while.
25. What can we infer from the text
A. The northern lights came out every night.
B. The author took lots of pictures with his camera.
C. The author could stay as long as he liked outdoors.
D. Cameras will be damaged if exposed too long to coldness.
26. When is the best time to see the northern lights
A. They are between the north and south. B. They rise in the east and set in the west.
C. They appear in the north part of the sky. D. They come down to the south part of the sky.
27. Why is it hard for the author to take good pictures
A. The lights of the sun affect the northern lights. B. The lights are caused by the collisions of gases.
C. The lights stay in the middle for a very short time. D. The colours of the lights are determined by the height.
C
New emojis(表情符号) appear every year. The updates come from a California-based non-profit committee called Unicode Consortium. Each year, the emoji committee releases new emojis that will update the existing keyboard.
Jennifer Daniel, chair of the committee, says that it's not the organization coming up with these new characters. It's the public.
The first emoji keyboard was created in Japan in the 1990s by mobile phone company designer Shigetaka Kurita. Kurita created emojis because the company offered email communications that were limited to 250 characters and an emoji is only one character each but can be used to say more. Emojis have become popular around the world—92 percent of the online population uses them.
“They aren't tied to any language. They aren't tied to any region of the world,” she says.
Anyone is allowed to submit(提交) new emojis, and if they make a strong enough case, Unicode will accept them. “We do get suggestions in lots of different languages from around the world,” says Daniel.
An emoji idea has to meet certain criteria(标准). These criteria include its clear differences, whether it can be used with existing emoji s and whether it can have multiple meanings. The popular face with “tears of joy” emoji, for example, is easy to identify, which makes it distinct. You can pair it with many other emoji s to convey how you are feeling. Additionally, this emoji has adopted many meanings.
Kids today are very familiar with emojis and how to use them. And the keyboard has got more than 3,600 emoji characters. “They became more and more comfortable and confident using emojis, which means they're more willing to take risks,” Daniel says of younger generations who grow up with the keyboard.
28. Which best describes emojis
A. They vary from place to place. B. They are more expressive than words.
C. They make daily talk more difficult. D. They are limited in computers.
29. What can we learn about Unicode Consortium
A. It gives emojis new meanings. B. It invents new emojis every year.
C. It created the first emoji keyboard. D. It judges the submission of new emojis.
30. Why is the popular face with “tears of joy” emoji mentioned
A. To prove its difference from others. B. To let the emoji be accepted by more people.
C. To make the criteria understood more easily. D. To show its popularity among young people.
31. What's the younger generation's attitude towards using emojis
A. Supportive. B. Indifferent. C. Cautious. D. Critical.
D
A handful of stencils(模板) and three pens sound like materials for a child's art project. But researchers have now used these tools to draw functional health monitors directly on human skin.
Wearable sensor technology, which helps doctors Check a variety of health indicators(指标), has in recent years advanced from heavy equipment to flexible patches(贴片). These sensors can be expensive, however. They also tend to follow skin imperfectly, making them sensitive to the wearer's move. Researchers say that a new drawn-on-skin electronics system could offer a solution to both problems.
A team led by biomedical engineer Faheem Ershad of the University of Houston first developed a conductive(导电的) ink that is safe to use on human skin. The researchers loaded the ink into ballpoint pens, then placed a stencil made of tape on a volunteer and followed within it to draw the simple circuit diagram(电路图). Within five minutes the ink dried to create a working sensor. The researchers then taped on an electrical line to provide power and send data to a computer.
Using just this type of ink, the team measured the electrical activity of heart and muscles. Because the sensor stuck perfectly to the skin, wearers could walk around without jarring it, which reduced data quality. The ink didn't take in sweat and was easily removed with a wet paper towel and soap.
For more advanced equipment, Ershad's team used two additional inks: one served as a semi-conductor(半导体), and the other acted as an object to prevent electricity. Zheng Yan, a biomedical engineer at the University of Missouri, and his colleagues have developed similar technology using pencils and paper, but their method is limited to passive conductors that cannot introduce energy into a circuit. Ershad says that he hopes to create high-tech sensors to discover health indicators ranging from elements in sweat to the brain's electrical activity.
The researchers plan to eventually make their sensors truly wireless by combining more advanced ink-based circuits. After that achievement, they say, people could use affordable sets of stencils and pens to carefully watch their own health at home.
32. How does the new wearable sensor technology work
A. By placing a stencil to send health data.
B. By applying a conductive ink to human skin.
C. By loading a safe ink to a working sensor.
D. By drawing simple circuit diagram with pens.
33. What does the underlined word “jarring” in paragraph 4 probably mean
A. Shaking. B. Accessing. C. Curing. D. Hiding.
34. What can be inferred from the last two paragraphs
A. Hospitals will increase the cost of testing health indicators.
B. Researchers aim to make advanced wireless ink-based sensors.
C. A safe sensor will be applied to make human skin less sensitive.
D. Yan's team has developed a technology to lead energy into a circuit.
35. What is the text mainly talking about
A. A child's art project helping check health indicators.
B. A conductive ink sensor sending data to a computer.
C. An electronics system checking brain's electrical activity.
D. A pen-and-ink method producing wearable health equipment.

How to Speak in Public
Many people have a fear of public speaking. They worry that they will lose their tongue, bore the audience or somehow make a fool of themselves. It is easy to try to avoid public speaking, but that usually doesn't work out. Everyone has to speak publicly at some point in their life. You may give a speech in a class or a meeting. Maybe you'll have to give a speech for some honor you've received. 36
Relax. 37 Your audience don't expect you to be perfect. They want you to succeed just as much as you do. If you're thinking you'll forget everything, remind yourself that you are prepared and knowledgeable. Imagine yourself doing well.
Be yourself. You are not Jack Canfield or Tony Robbins. Share your true personality with your audience, and they'll find you dependable. 38
Know your topic. Try to speak about the subject you know well. Research the topic to make sure that you are correct. Public speaking is easier when you don't feel like a fraud(骗子).
39 Choose your message for the group you are speaking to carefully. If you're giving a public speech, then rude jokes certainly won't be suitable.
Give value. Base your speech on 2 or 3 main points. 40 They'll be satisfied if they leave with something they can use, and that is what public speaking is all about.
A. Know your audience.
B. Choose a serious message.
C. Don't force yourself to be perfect.
D. Don't focus your attention on too many points.
E. Pretend to be someone that you're not, and they'll discover it.
F. Your audience will not remember every little de tail you tell them.
G. Follow these steps to satisfy your audience and overcome your fear of speaking publicly.

The handiwork(手工) class was over. Karl was delighted that he had created a satisfying work. So he walked to the back of the classroom to put his work away carefully. There, lying on the floor beside the classroom bookcase, was a golden ticket! Karl picked it up. His heart beat faster when he saw that the name line was blank(空白的). He couldn't believe his luck!
The boys and girls in Karl's class could earn golden tickets by doing well in their study or by being extra helpful or kind. Once a week their teacher drew the tickets out of a box on her desk and let the winner choose a prize.
Today was the golden ticket drawing, and here was another ticket, just for him! Karl looked around. No one else was near the ticket. All his classmates were at their desks, laughing and talking with each other. Miss Evans was engaged in grading the papers collected earlier in the morning.
Karl decided to write his name on the blank line. Then he could put it into the box with the six tickets he'd already earned. With so many tickets, he would most probably be the winner! Then he could choose the pink toy pig for his sister's birthday, just like he had been hoping.
He smiled and reached for the pencil. Suddenly his fingers stopped. There was a strange feeling in his chest, and it wasn't his heartbeat. “Finders are keepers, right ” he wondered. He looked out of the window and tried to figure it out. On the one hand, he did find the ticket, but he hadn't earned it. Somebody must have lost it. But on the other hand, he did need this extra ticket for his great plan!

M: You know I like Mexican food.
W: Yeah, but it does not like you.
(Text 6)
W: Sorry about the wait. I'm Doctor Green.
M: How do you do
W: Hi. I see that you're experiencing some back pain.
M: Yes, I am. My doctor's away on vacation. He always gives me this to reduce my pain, but I've run out of my pills. I wonder if, uh, you might be able to give me some.
W: You really should have a thorough checkup, but you're the most polite patient I've seen all week, so I'll break the rule for you.
(Text 7)
M: Hello, is that Annie
W: No, I'm one of her roommates. She's out, you know, shopping.
M: When will she be back, do you think
W: Oh, I don't know. Hang on a moment. I mean who wants her
M: I'm a friend of hers. Look, would you be so kind to give her a message
W: Hang on while I get a pen... OK. What's the message
M: My name is Kris Schuster, Room 688, the Terminal Hotel, Washington. I'll go to see her next week.
W: Does she know your phone number
M: It's 4934975. You won't forget to tell her it's urgent, will you
W: Don't worry. I'll tell her.
M: Thanks. Bye-bye.
(Text 8)
W: It's Jane's birthday today. We are going to the cinema after school. Want to go
M: After school I have got to study for the math test tomorrow.
W: Don't worry. The test will be easy.
M: Well, I don't know. When will the film start
W: At 4:45.
M: I think I'll stay back in school and do some review first, then I will join you.
W: OK. We’ll get the tickets first. You meet us at Kristy’s Corner a quarter earlier before the film starts. We’ll be having some ice-cream there before the film starts.
M: OK. But I still want to go to the bookstore before the film starts. There is a sale and I'd like to get a book.
(Text 9)
W: Have you finished the report on private schools
M: Not yet. You know, I have two other articles to write and the editor has just sent me out to report on the big fire. I have got to go slow.
W: Yeah. Speaking of the big fire, I'd like to know the exact number of victims.
M: Unfortunately, 5 people died. 28 people are still in hospital. Among the dead, 2 are children.
W: Oh... Poor kids! Didn't they call the firefighters to help
M: I'm not sure about that. They may have tried to put out the fire, but it was impossible to control it. With the help of the firefighters, the fire was finally brought under control, but had still caused great damage.
W: I'm wondering what caused the fire.
M: It was a cigarette end that burnt the carpet up when a man was sleeping soundly on the sofa. His son was playing with his cigarette end by the table. He threw the cigarette end on the carpet.
W: How could a kid get the cigarette!
M: That is the point. The man was drunk and he died in his dream.
(Text 10)
W: During the summer you should be even more careful than usual because food goes bad faster in hot weather than in cold weather. When you buy frozen and refrigerated foods, don't make long stops on your way home because frozen foods could become soft or warm. Using bags helps keep food cold until you can get home. Milk and milk products should be refrigerated immediately. When camping or picnicking or at any time when refrigeration can't be made use of, use special dry foods . Don't leave food in a hot car. Picnic favorites like meat, chicken and eggs should be kept in a cooler box. Above all, if the food doesn't seem to be normal in smell or appearance, throw it away immediately. Don't taste it.

31. A 态度判断题。 根据最后一段“Kids today are very familiar with emoji s and how to use them. And the keyboard has got more than 3,600 emoji characters. ‘They became more and more comfortable and confident using emojis, which means they're more willing to take risks,'Daniel says of younger generations who grow up with the keyboard.”可知,年轻一代支持使用表情符号。
32. B 细节理解题。根据第三段“A team led by biomedical engineer Faheem Ershad of the University of Houston first developed a conductive(导电的) ink that is safe to use on human skin. The researchers loaded the ink into ballpoint pens, then placed a stencil made of tape on a volunteer and followed within it to draw the simple circuit diagram(电路图). Within five minutes the ink dried to create a working sensor. The researchers then taped on an electrical line to provide power and send data to a computer.”可知,这种新的可穿戴传感器的工作原理是将一种可导电的墨水涂在皮肤上。
33. A 词义猜测题。根据第二段中“They also tend to follow skin imperfectly, making them sensitive to the wearer's move. Researchers say that a new drawn-on-skin electronics system could offer a solution to both problems.”及画线词前半句“Because the sensor stuck perfectly to the skin”及画线词后半句“which reduced data quality”可知,由于新的传感器可以完美地附着在皮肤上,佩戴者在走动时不会摇晃到它而导致降低数据质量。jarring为“摇晃;震动”之意,与动词 shake 意思相近。
34. B 推理判断题。根据最后一段中“The researchers plan to eventually make their sensors truly wireless by combining more advanced ink-based circuits.”可推断,研究人员的目标是制造先进的无线墨水传感器。
35. D 主旨大意题。根据第一段“A handful of stencils(模板) and three pens sound like materials for a child’sart project. But researchers have now used these tools to draw functional health monitors directly on human skin.”和最后一段中“After that achievement, they say, people could use affordable sets of stencils and pens to carefully watch their own health at home.”及全文可知,文章主要介绍一支科研团队研发出了一种新型的“电子穿戴设备”,它是直接画在皮肤上的,主要是用电子墨水笔在皮肤上画出专业传感器和电路来实现健康监测。所以“A pen-and-ink method producing wearable health equipment. (一种笔墨法生产可穿戴的健康设备。)”概括文章大意最为合适。
36. G 根据首句“Many people have a fear of public speaking.”可知,该段围绕这一主旨句展开。G项承上启下,既承接上文,又引出下文克服恐惧的方法。

写作
Karl looked at the blan k name line for a moment. He knew his plan wouldn't be so great if he won with a ticket that didn't belong to him. So he walked up to his teacher. “Miss Evans, I happened to find this ticket on the floor near the bookcase. I think the one who lost it will look for it. And these are mine,” he said, dropping his six tickets into the box. When he turned around to leave, the teacher stopped him.
“Karl, I intend to give you another ticket!” Miss Evans said. Karl was amazed and wondered why. Miss Evans smiled and signed to the class to quiet down, “Karl handed in the golden ticket he had just found. I think he is honest and deserves another one!” The class burst into loud applause. Karl happily went back to his seat, eagerly expecting the golden ticket drawing. He still wanted his name to be picked, but he would feel OK even if it wasn't. After all, making the right choice did make him feel great!
