Because after the outbreak of war he realized that China needed its own powerful air force to protect and defend the country.
China was poor and its rocket science was undeveloped. No institute or university in China offered rocket science as a major, and there were no talents or experts in this field in China.
Because much of the aerospace technology behind the Shenzhou rockets was based on his research.

A Great Scientist I Respect Most
Yuan Longping, known as the "father of hybrid rice", is one of China's most famous scientists. He devoted so much to agricultural science that I respect and admire him most.
Born in 1930 in Beijing, Yuan chose to study agriculture against his parents' will, because what concerned him most was farmers' poor harvests and food shortages. After graduating from Southwest Agricultural College, he worked as a researcher with the objective of developing hybrid rice, which was a challenging question at that time. Through intense effort and thousands of failures, he finally overcame enormous technical difficulties to develop hybrid rice. His innovation benefits not only Chinese farmers but also people all over the world.
Thanks to Yuan's devotion, the world hunger problem has been greatly alleviated. Besides being determined, diligent, patient and modest, it is his ongoing ability to fulfill his dreams that impresses me most. To pursue his dreams, he didn't stop working in the field until the end of life. On 22 May 2021, the whole country was saddened by Yuan's death, but his influence will last forever in our memory.
