二、阅读理解
Any diet on which you eat fewer calories than you need to get through the day, like an 800-calorie-per-day diet, can be dangerous.Diets that don't allow any fat also can be bad for you.Everyone needs a certain amount of fat in their diet,up to 30% of total calories,so no one should eat a completely fat-free diet.
Don't have diets that restrict certain food groups, either. A diet that requires you to say no to bread or pasta or allows you to eat only fruit is unhealthy. You won't get the vitamins and minerals you need. And although you may lose weight, you'll probably gain it back as soon as you start eating normally again.
Some people start dieting because they think all the problems in their lives are because of weight.Others have an area of their lives that they can't control, like an alcoholic parent,so they focus on something they can control, their exercise and food intake (摄入).
People who diet may get lots of praise from friends and family when they start losing pounds, which makes them feel good. But eventually a person reaches a weight level and doesn't lose as much weight as before because the body is trying to keep a healthy weight,so they aren't any happier.
Some people may find it hard to control their eating,so they stick with an__extreme__diet for a little while, but then eat tons of food.Feeling guilty about the binge, they use laxatives(泻药).Eating too little to maintain a healthy weight or eating only to throw up the calories are both eating disorders, which are harmful to a person's health.

Many years ago,an experiment in education was carried out in secret at a school in England. The school had two classes for children of the same age.At the end of the school year an examination was held,in order to select the children for the classes of next year. However, the results of the exam were never made known. In secret, based on their performance in the exam, the higher-performing and lower-performing children were divided equally between the two classes.Only the headmaster and the psychologists knew the truth.Teachers for the next year were carefully selected for equal ability and experience.Even the classrooms were chosen with similar facilities (设备).Everything was made as equal as possible, except for one thing:one was called “Class A”,the other,“Class B”.
In everyone's minds the children in Class A were the clever ones, and the kids in Class B were not so clever. Some of the parents of the Class A children were pleasantly surprised that their children had done so well and rewarded them with presents and praise, while the parents of some of the Class B kids complained that their children did not work hard enough and took away some of their rewards.Even the teachers taught the Class B kids in a different manner, not expecting so much from them. For a whole year the illusion existed. Then there was another end-of-year exam.
The results were not surprising. The children of Class A performed so much better than those of Class B.In fact, the results were just as if they had been the top half chosen from last year's exam. They had become “Class A” children. And those in the other group, though equal the year before, had now become “Class B” kids. That was what they were told for a whole year, that was how they were treated, and that was what they believed—so that was what they became.

Six Ways to Improve Reading Comprehension
Help your child improve reading comprehension—a crucial skill, especially as he gets older and needs to gain important information from textbooks.
Have him read aloud. This forces him to go slower, which gives him more time to process what he reads.__1__ Provide the right kinds of books.Make sure your child gets lots of practice reading books that aren't too hard.__2__ Stopping any more often than that to figure out a word makes it tough for him to focus on the overall meaning of the story.
__3__ To gain meaning from text, your child needs to read quickly and smoothly—a skill known as fluency.Rereading familiar, simple books gives your child practice at decoding words quickly so he'll become more fluent.
Talk to the teacher. If your child is struggling hard with comprehension,he may need more help with his reading—for example, building his vocabulary or practicing phonics skills.
Supplement class reading. If his class is studying a particular theme, look for easy-to-read books or magazines on the topic. Some prior knowledge will make his way through tougher classroom texts.
Talk about what he's reading. This “verbal processing” helps him remember and think through the themes of the book.__4__ For example:
●Before:“What interests you in this book?What doesn't?”
●During:“__5__ Is it turning out the way you thought it would?”
●After:“Can you summarize the book? What do you like about it ?”
A.Reread to build fluency.
B.What's going on in the book?
C.Look up new words in the dictionary.
D.Do you know all the characters in the story?
E.Ask questions before,during,and after a reading session.
F.Plus,he's not only seeing the words, but he's also hearing them.
G.He should recognize at least 90 percent of the words without any help.

Cleveland was an industrial boomtown in the years after World War Ⅰ. The city was growing very fast, thanks to the steel industry, the automobile industry and other big businesses. And along with a growing population, there was also a growing number of cars.
Garrett Morgan was the first African-American man in Cleveland to own one. One day,Morgan was at a busy Cleveland intersection when he witnessed a particularly bad collision. As he analyzed what had happened,he realized what the problem was.
Back in those days, traffic signals were just “stop” or “go”. And a lot of times, the sign would switch while a car was in the middle of the intersection—with no time to get out. That gave Morgan an idea. He created a traffic signal that had a third fun_ction—the warning sign that had been missing up until that point. And on November 20th,1923,the US Patent Office officially recognized his new invention.
Originally, the traffic signal that Morgan invented had to be operated manually instead of auto-switch. Eventually,he sold the rights to his traffic signal to General Electric Company, which led to the creation of the modern traffic light—the lights we see today at intersections all over the world.
Morgan was born in Kentucky in 1877. As a teenager,he moved to Ohio to find a job. At first, finding a job was difficult because a lot of businesses would not hire a black man. But Morgan was determined and he became a successful businessman himself and a newspaper publisher as well. He also invented a number of other products in addition to the traffic signal including a gas mask that became the model for the protective masks worn by soldiers during World War Ⅰ. Garrett Morgan died on August 27th,1963.
And his determination to be somebody—despite the racial discrimination he faced—helped open new roads to success for the generations that have followed him. “If a man puts something to block your way,the first time, you go around it,”he once said.“The second time, you go over it. And the third time, you go throught it.”

We spend two weeks in London last year.We went there in autumn. We think it is the best season to visit England. The weather is usually good but there aren't too many tourists in October.
We stayed in a small hotel in the West End.It was convenient as we did most of our traveling by foot.We went to look at the places where all tourists see.We saw Buckingham Palace and the National Gallery.
We went to shopping in Oxford Street and spent too many money. What we liked most, though, was going to theatre. We don't have the chance to see so wonderful plays at home.A lot of people say English food is very badly. We didn't think so.It's true that most of the restaurants are French or Italian or Chinese, but we had some very good meal.

Kids can be taught valuable lessons on nature from the time they are old enough to observe their surroundings. With the help of a parent, grandparent or caregiver,a small child can learn to explore parks, wooded areas and gardens.Parents and caregivers should take every available opportunity to introduce them to plant life, beneficial insects, wildlife and more. These types of lessons are important.
One of the best ways to explore nature with a small child is on their level.Look for wild flowers, and point out their beautiful colors and patterns.Even a very small child can learn to recognize wild flowers. However,it is also important to teach a small child the importance of leaving nature untouched for others to enjoy.Leaving wild flowers alone will allow them to spread and continue their life cycle. They look beautiful in a vase, but they are even more lovely in their natural habitat.
The world in between blades (叶片) of grass and under the leaves of flowers is seldom seen by human beings. When looking for ways to explore nature with a small child, take the time to get down on the ground and look for insects including ants, fireflies, ladybugs, earthworms and caterpillars.A child should be taught that living beings are not toys. They have feelings and needs.A small child should be taught that life is valuable to every living creature.Kids that are taught to respect nature will grow to be more caring adults.
Plant life is also an important part of our environment, and it is fun to explore with a child of any age.Plant some vegetables or flower seeds when seeking additional ways to explore nature with a small child. If space is lacking, start a small container garden.Fill a pot with rich organic soil, and have the child help plant the seeds and care for the seedlings (幼苗) as they grow. Not only is it fun and educational, but it is also a great bonding experience and a way to positively influence a small and impressionable child.

Eleven-year-old twins Luke and Ryan Novolsel of Wilmette,Illinois, had a goal. The fifth-graders wanted to set a Guinness world record.
Ryan Novolsel and his twin brother Luke hope that Guinness World Records will recognize their school for having the most sets of twins in a single grade. Some of their friends had already tried to jump on a pogo stick longer than anyone else. One even attempted to produce the loudest burp(打嗝). But none of them came close. Then Luke and Ryan realized that there were lots of other twins in their grade at Highcrest Middle School. They did a full count, and were amazed to discover 24 sets of twins in all.
“We were absolutely shocked,”Luke and Ryan's mother,Nancy Fendley, told the Associated Press. The boys figured they now had their Guinness record:most pairs of twins in one grade. The current record is 16 pairs, and is shared by Valley Southwoods Freshman High School in Iowa,Staples High School in Connecticut, and Maine South High School in Illinois.
Earlier this year,Luke and Ryan—with help from their parents—sent an application to Guinness. They added birth certificates, photos, and proof that all of the sets of twins attend Highcrest Middle School. They expected to hear back in several weeks on whether they actually set a new world record.
Since 1980,twin birth rates have more than doubled in the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control(CDC). The age of mothers has gone up over the years, and women in their 30s are more likely to give birth to twins. In 2009,one in every 30 infants was born a twin, compared with one in 53 infants in 1980.
For Highcrest Middle School, the rise in twin births could be a ticket into the record books. Dave Palzet, the school's principal, said he is proud of his students' effort.“I think it is wonderful that they have taken it on themselves to research and work with the world record officials to obtain this great honor for Highcrest Middle School,”he said.

On Friday June 21st,2013,the folks at the annual Sonoma County Fair in California celebrated the 25th anniversary of a rather unusual contest—one that crowns the “World's Ugliest Dog”! And while in most settings a title like this would be considered insulting (无礼的) here,it is liked by both the dog owners who come from all over the world and the visitors that come to cheer the contestants.
To mark this special anniversary, this year's fair that was themed “Dog Days of Summer” featured among other things, including an exhibit featuring the contestants and winners from the last 25 years.
As for the winner? Unlike last year, when he had flown in all the way from London,England, this year's title winner was Chico,California resident Walle, who beat out 29 other equally “ugly contestants”. The refreshing part was that Walle, who happened to be a last minute entrant(参赛者),is not a nearly hairless,Chinese Crested Chihuahua or a mix of both breeds, which have been dominating the contest for many years now. Instead,he is a mutt mix—part beagle, part basset and part boxer.
The four-year-old impressed the judges with his giant head and humped back. As one of them put it,he looked as though he had been photoshopped with pieces from various dogs and maybe a few other animals. It exactly represents the kind of natural “ugliness” they were looking for!
Along with the title, the first time entrant received a cash prize of $1,500 as well as scheduled appearances on NBC's weekend Today on Sunday, the Today Show on Monday and the Jimmy Kimmel Show on Wednesday.
Though the competition may seem unbelievable to some people,it is held just for fun and organized by an animal psychiatrist who not only vets the dogs before they enter the competition to ensure they are healthy, but also has a “pet” talk with them to ensure they are also happy. It is also important to remember all the contestants come from homes where they are loved because of their rather unusual looks. After all, beauty is in the eye of the beholder!

(2013·新课标全国卷Ⅱ)In 1947 a group of famous people from the art world headed by an Austrian conductor decided to hold an international festival of music, dance and theatre in Edinburgh. The idea was to reunite Europe after the Second World War.
It quickly attracted famous names such as Alec Guinness,Richard Burton,Dame Margot Fonteyn and Marlene Dietrich as well as the big symphony orchestras(交响乐团).It became a fixed event every August and now attracts 400,000 people yearly.
At the same time, the“Fringe”appeared as a challenge to the official festival.Eight theatre groups turned up uninvited in 1947,in the belief that everyone should have the right to perform, and they did so in a public house disused for years.
Soon, groups of students firstly from Edinburgh University, and later from the universities of Oxford and Cambridge,Durham and Birmingham were making the journey to the Scottish capital each summer to perform theatre by little-known writers of plays in small church halls to the people of Edinburgh.
Today the“Fringe”,once less recognized, has far outgrown the festival with around 1,500 performances of theatre, music and dance on every one of the 21 days it lasts. And yet as early as 1959,with only 19 theatre groups performing, some said it was getting too big.
A paid administrator was first employed only in 1971,and today there are eight administrators working all year round and the number rises to 150 during August itself. In 2004 there were 200 places housing 1,695 shows by over 600 different groups from 50 different countries.More than 1.25 million tickets were sold.

(2014·承德四校抽样检测)A group of eight public high school students in Massachusetts, aged 15 to 17,designed and ran their own school within a school. They named their practice the Independent Project. They represented the usual range:two were close to dropping out before they started the project, while others were honors students.
Their guidance teacher was their adviser, consulting with them when the group encountered difficulties.Though they sought advice from English, math and science teachers, they were responsible for monitoring one another's work and giving one another feedback. There were no grades, but at the end of the term, the students wrote evaluations of their classmates.
The students also designed their own course. In addition to some regular courses, they each took on an “individual project”,learning to play the piano or to cook, writing a novel or making a video about domestic (国内的) violence. At the end of the term, they performed their new skills in front of the entire school. The last part of their self-designed course was to do a “collective project” that had social significance.Because they felt the whole experience had been so life-changing,they ended up making a film showing how other students could start and run their own schools.
The project was a success. After returning to their traditional study, the students have high motivation and are doing well. One student who had failed all of his previous math courses spent three weeks teaching the others about probability. The lesson learned here is that if students are given the opportunity to take control or contribute significantly to their own learning they will become more accomplished, more engaged and more knowledgeable.
The students in the project are remarkable because they demonstrate the kinds of learning and personal growth that are possible when teenagers feel ownership of their high school experience, learn things that matter to them and learn together.

There is a proverb that went “Honesty is the best policy”.I still remember the day that I was left alone at home.I broke a vase by chances, which was quite treasured by my father. When he came back,I was too fearful that I didn't tell the truth. The cat was his excuse. My father said nothing, and I could read his distrust. The next morning, after a restless night,I admitted to my father that it was my fault.I saw relief in his eyes.He smiled at me.From now on,I never told lies.My honesty won me great trust from others, which benefited from my growth a lot.It is the “crack” that is reminding me all the time that I have long way to go.With the light through the crack I can see the road ahead clear.

The National Post reports that for three days during finals week, students at Dalhousie University can spend some time with lovely dogs, which are being brought in by Therapeutic Paws of Canada.“It is something that people need right now because students are superstressed,”Michael Kean,an environmental science student who first proposed the idea, told the Post.
After the Student Union first advertised the event on its Facebook page, the news of the Puppy Room spread quickly across social networking sites.“Our expectations are pretty high right now,”Gavin Jardine, vice president of student life at Dalhousie told the Post.“We had 1,800 shares, thousands of ‘likes'.It attracted a lot of attention on Twitter as well.It spread as quickly as a virus.”
Don LeBlanc of Therapeutic Paws of Canada said all the dogs attending the event come from loving homes and enjoy the company of people.A number of different breeds will be on hand to interact with students who sign up to visit the Puppy Room. And buzz from the Dalhousie Puppy Room has spread so quickly that LeBlanc says a half dozen universities have already called about staging similar events for their students.
So,is there any actual evidence to support using guest dogs to reduce the stress of busy college students?“If you do any research at all about the benefits of using pets, you'll find out quite quickly that it lowers blood pressure,”LeBlanc said.“It certainly made a huge difference in my life when I got a dog.”

How many people write letters nowadays?I mean the good old fashioned kind complete with the salutation, body and closing.I got to thinking about that today as I was visiting a wonderful website that my friend Bernie had posted on Facebook. It was an awesome link to a website entitled Letters of Note. The letter that she posted was one from Richard Feynman to his dead wife.
The letter that is posted on the blog is sweet—telling of his undying love for his dead wife.It touched me and I am sure if you venture over there it will touch you, too. The great thing is that there are thousands of really awesome letters to explore and read on that site.I got caught up in the letters for an hour or so.
When I went to college, the only thing that my parents really asked of me was that I write home once a week.Of course this was in the dark ages when computers were not the standard household item,so that meant a physically written letter. To this day I write home to my mom weekly as I have got used to it.The method has changed as she has a computer. But I kind of miss those letters and when I do get one of her handwritten letters,I get excited.
Chris and I wrote many letters to one another when we were dating and I still have all of those letters. They are part of my life. Those words we wrote to one another were the basis for our marriage of almost 30 years.I know that they have no significance for anyone other than us,but they are a piece of history—our history. And I'll never weed them out.
Do you have any letters that you are reluctant to part with?

Using tablet computers like Apple's iPad and Samsung's Galaxy Note just before bed can lead to a poor night's sleep, according to research.
More and more people are taking their tablet computers to bed with them to surf the Internet, check Facebook or email before switching off the light.__1__
That is because this type of light is like daylight, convincing the brain that it is still daytime.
Blue light suppresses (抑制) the production of a brain chemical called melatonin, which helps us fall asleep.__2__
By contrast, the light which is orange or red in tones does not suppress the melatonin production, perhaps because our brains recognize it as a signal that the day is ending.
__3__ Whether they are television screens, computer screens or mobile phone screens.
However, because mobile phones and tablet computers are by nature portable, not to say addictive, more people are taking them into the bed room.__4__
Researchers at the Lighting Research Centre,at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in New York, are warning that looking at tablet computers' displays for more than two hours “leads to the suppression of our natural melatonin levels as the devices give off optical radiation at short wavelengths”.__5__
A.In other words, they give off bluer light.
B.But researchers are warning that the bluish light their screens give off can stop users getting a good night's sleep.
C.Users also tend to hold them much closer to their eyes than a computer or television screen.
D.It is not just a good night's sleep that could be damaged by too much late night screen time.
E.Neurologists have known for years that staring at screens late in the evening can disrupt sleep.
F.This is because our brains have evolved to be wakeful during daylight hours.
G.Researchers know that persistent damage to sleep patterns can lead to an increased risk of obesity, and even breast cancer.

I get off a 15-hour flight from North America and turn on my cellphone at an Asian airport.Instead of focusing on the ride into town,I am busy with several dozen e-mails that piled up while I was on the plane,a third of which require a quick response, and some of which pass worrying news. Each morning in Asia,I begin something like this. The media tell us how lucky we are to live in the Information Age.But I believe we have created a very unpleasant situation on Earth for ourselves.
In the early 1980s,nobody had advance notice of my arrival anywhere.I'd fly to Addis Ababa to cover an earthquake,or to Sarajevo to cover the preparations for the Winter Olympics, armed with only about eight names and telephone numbers. Now,after calling for days with someone just to arrange a meeting, when you arrive,he answers some of your questions and then asks you to turn to a website.
Travel is like a good, challenging book:it demands the ability to live completely in the moment, and it demands to focus on the words or vision of reality before you.And like serious reading itself, travel has become an act of opposition to the distractions of the electronic age.A good book needs to be finished, just as a beautiful landscape tempts further experience of it,and further research into it.During that summer in Eastern Europe almost 40 years ago,I found myself in a small lodge in a Romanian forest during two days of rainstorms.I read Turgenev's Fathers and Sons there. And so I experienced solitude rather than loneliness.Nothing existed for me except the worlds of 19th-century Russia and late-20th-century Romania.
My friend now plans to sail the Northwest Passage in a small boat, which means being essentially out of electronic contact for about four months in the High Arctic.I can't go along. But I know there are people like my friend whose circumstances are different, who will choose actual experience, who will resist.Only because of them, the art of travel lives on.

My parents were all standing there, shouting at each other. The word "divorce(离婚)" was repeated and broke my heart each time. I had trapped between them and didn't know what to do. A million thoughts rushed into my mind, but nothing of them could ease my feelings. I rushed back to my room, seated down in silence and stared out of the window. The leaves were floated in the air. They struggled trying to catch the wind and finally they had to fall on the ground.I knew I was not the only one had gone through this. But I must learn to fight against this. The baby is just one day old and has not yet left hospital. She is quiet but alert(警觉).Twenty centimeters from her face researchers have placed a white card with two black spots on it.She stares at it carefully.A researcher removes the card and replaces it by another, this time with the spots differently spaced. As the cards change from one to the other, her gaze(凝视)starts to lose its focus—until a third, with three black spots,is presented. Her gaze returns;she looks at it for twice as long as she did at the previous card. Can she tell that the number two is different from three, just 24 hours after coming into the world?
Or do newborns simply prefer more to fewer? The same experiment, but with three spots shown before two, shows the same return of interest when the number of spots changes.Perhaps it is just the newness? When slightly older babies were shown cards with pictures of objects(a comb,a key,an orange and so on),changing the number of objects had an effect separate from changing the objects themselves.Could it be the pattern that two things make,as opposed to three? No again.Babies paid more attention to squares moving randomly on a screen when their number changed from two to three,or three to two.The effect even crosses between senses.Babies who were repeatedly shown two spots became more excited when they then heard three drumbeats than when they heard just two;likewise(同样地)when the researchers started with drumbeats and moved to spots.

Dear editor,
In the past my hometown was used to be a beautiful place. Thick trees and green grass can be seen everywhere. In order to build house and grow more crops, people cut down more and more trees. With time went on, the whole forest was almost destroyed. Gradually the green hills have changed into wasteland. As a result, sandstorms struck us now and then, from that we suffer a lot. However, I do hope all the people should realize the terribly result of not caring about our environment. What's more, they should take good care of the forests and plant trees instead cutting them down to improve our living conditions.

I remembered that cloudy day when I was 17 and ran barefoot down the path to the mailbox. When I saw my SAT score,I sank into the grass and cried.I got a 1,090.Back then,in 1985,the highest score was 1,600.All of my friends—the smart kids—got somewhere around 1,400.
I had thought I was one of the smart kids.In the fifth grade,I was put in Miss Thweat's Language Arts class, which I knew was the hardest. In junior and senior high,I took honors classes and graduated from Palmetto High in the top 10 percent.Being smart meant getting into a good college, then becoming a brain surgeon,or a Supreme Court Justice or winning a Nobel Peace Prize by ending world hunger. These were on my list of things to do when I grew up.Until I took the SAT and I found out I was average.
I took the test again. And again. And again.1,090 was my best.I'm no genius, except at tennis,so I got into the University of Pennsylvania,an Ivy League school, because I was recruited by the tennis coach. My SAT score didn't kill my opportunities. It killed my confidence.Once at Penn,I felt outclassed. There were no dumb kids, except me.And that one girl who scored a 1,010 was the US backstroke champion. Before the SAT,I'd done well in school, but at Penn I panicked over exams.I couldn't focus in class.I got C minuses.
When my tennis coach sent me to a counselor,I said,“I don't need a counselor.I need a tutor.”But my coach was right. My problem was psychological.I know this because after spending my junior year in Spain, something shifted.I wasn't the same average Andrea.I was Ahndrreeah.I read “Cien A?os de Soledad,”conquered Ferdinand and Isabella, and mastered subjunctive verbs.I remember thinking,“If I can get A's in Spanish,I can get A's in my own language.”When I went back to Penn my senior year,I did get A's.So,friends, don't lose confidence and believe in yourselves.

We bought our new house that afternoon, and I was in the workshop of the garage.I noticed a part of a carpet sticking out of the ceiling of an attic (阁楼) that was strange.I found a ladder and headed up.
I climbed into a space above the workshop that was walled off from the rest of the attic. As my eyes adjusted to the dark,I saw a metal container.I opened the lid and was shocked by what I saw:several rolls of money tied up in orange string.Holy cow,I thought,I've found, like $800.Awesome!
But there was more than one box of money.I found another seven boxes full to the top, plus two big black bags full of cash.I won't lie.My first thought was that this was a blessing from God—the means to fix up this run-down house; to adopt a child, something we'd talked so long about doing;or just to use to make life easier for our two young sons, who were seven and four. But I knew as soon as I had those fantasies that the right thing was to return the money to the previous owners. So I called them and asked them to drop by.
They were shocked,of course, not only about the money but that I was returning it.They had recently got the house from their dad and said it must have been their dad who had hidden the money. What made him do it?I thought about the hundreds of times he had gone to his shop, cut off a length of orange string, and bound up a roll of money.I like to think he did it for his children.
There were balls of that orange string still hanging on the wall of the workshop when we moved in.I used them to tie up Christmas presents last year, for my kids.I hope it reminded them of the gift greater than money that my wife and I gave them by returning the money. We did the right thing, and our children will never forget that.

The earliest development of silk painting took place in India around 200 AD,and it was shortly after that when similar techniques were developed in China.Japanese art was heavily influenced by Chinese culture. The earliest complex art from Japan came between the seventh and eighth centuries.Early Japanese silk paintings were done with black ink or paint, and were generally monochromatic.Entering the 14th century Japanese artists began using a range of coloring matter, adding color to paintings.
Between the 16th and 18th centuries silk painting began to spread from its origins in Eastern Asia across the continent and eventually worldwide as intercontinental trade began to take place. In the 18th century, with the rise of the industrial revolution, silk became a readily accessible canvas (画布) and silk painting was popularized with European countries.Today the art of silk painting continues to develop and Japan ranks top as one of the cultural originators(发明者)of the tradition, says silk-painting expert Gill Kitchen.
The production of silk has taken place for more than 3,500 years.Although Chinese people originated the practice of silk harvesting in Eastern Asia, the Japanese got hold of silkworm eggs and began the production of silk.So Japanese had the opportunity of using silk canvases for artistic means. The largest influence for Japanese silk painting from its origin was Buddhism. It was with Buddhism that Japan originated its cultural and artistic identity. One common theme among early Japanese silk paintings was about historical events or heroes. The other common theme in Japanese art is that many Japanese paintings describe nature. Some common natural elements in Japanese silk paintings are birds, flowers, wildlife, mountains, trees and bamboo.
Until the 14th century, the Japanese used a brush rather than a pen for writing,to which their perfected skill in painting can be owed.Japanese artists have been using fine strokes (笔画) and accurate details to compose complex paintings.Another common practice in early Japanese art is the incorporation of written poetry into art to help convey the message of the painting.

Honey(蜂蜜)from the African forest is not only a kind of natural sugar,it is also delicious. Most people, and many animals, like eating it.However, the only way for them to get that honey is to find a wild bees' nest(巢)and take the honey from it.Often, these nests are high up in trees, and it is difficult to find them.In parts of Africa, though, people and animals looking for honey have a strange and unexpected helper—a little bird called a honey guide.
The honey guide does not actually like honey, but it does like the wax (蜂蜡) in the beehives (蜂房).The little bird cannot reach this wax, which is deep inside the bees' nest. So,when it finds a suitable nest,it looks for someone to help it.The honey guide gives a loud cry that attracts the attention of both passing animals and people.Once it has their attention,it flies through the forest, waiting from time to time for the curious animal or person as it leads them to the nest. When they finally arrive at the nest,the__follower reaches in to get at the delicious honey as the bird patiently waits and watches. Some of the honey, and the wax, always falls to the ground, and this is when the honey guide takes its share.
Scientists do not know why the honey guide likes eating the wax,but it is very determined in its efforts to get it.The birds seem to be able to smell wax from a long distance away. They will quickly arrive whenever a beekeeper is taking honey from his beehives, and will even enter churches when beeswax candles are being lit.

(2013·重庆卷)The morning had been a disaster. My tooth was aching, and I'd been in an argument with a friend. Her words still hurt:“The trouble with you is that you won't put yourself in my place. Can't you see things from my point of view?”I shook my head stubbornly—and felt the ache in my tooth.I'd thought I could hold out till my dentist came back from holiday, but the pain was really unbearable.I started calling the dentists in the phone book, but no one could see me immediately. Finally,at about lunchtime,I got lucky.
“If you come by right now,”the receptionist said,“the dentist will fit you in.”
I took my purse and keys and rushed to my car.But suddenly I began to doubt about the dentist. What kind of dentist would be so eager to treat someone at such short notice? Why wasn't he as busy as the others?
In the dentist's office,I sat down and looked around.I saw nothing but the bare walls and I became even more worried. The assistant noticed my nervousness and placed her warm hand over my ice-cold one.
When I told her my fears, she laughed and said,“Don't worry. The dentist is very good.”
“How long do I have to wait for him?”I asked impatiently.
“Come on,he is coming.Just lie down and relax. And enjoy the artwork,”the assistant said.
“The artwork?”I was puzzled.
The chair went back.Suddenly I smiled. There was a beautiful picture, right where I could enjoy it:on the ceiling. How considerate the dentist was! At that moment,I began to understand what my friend meant by her words.

Some people prefer to do almost everything over the Internet. To them, dealing with an actual human is like an evolutionary step backward. It feels very slow because humans don't work at 4G speeds. When you have dinner with friends, you will often notice someone paying more attention to his mobile phone. We have programmed ourselves to think that every new message brings life-changing news,so taking calls and checking our texts are more important than talking to the people we are with. What is worse, some people even tend to send anonymous(匿名的)rude messages by email.
However, rudeness is never acceptable.Don't assume it is OK to be rude if the person you're in touch with won't recognize you.If you have something awful to say, have the courage to face the person and say it,write a letter or email and sign it,or forget it.Upsetting people with unsigned messages is cruel and disgusting.

In 1999,Paula Lucas stood before an officer at the American Embassy in Abu Dhabi and detailed the abuses she and her three children had suffered at the hands of her Lebanese-born husband. But she was trapped:In the United Arab Emirates (UAE),beating up your wife and kids is not illegal. To her horror, the officer told her the embassy could not protect her.“I was naive (天真的),” says Lucas, who grew up in California.“I thought my American freedoms would travel with me.”
Facing huge difficulties,Lucas plotted her and her sons' escape. While her husband was out of town, she forged (伪造) his permission for their travel (a requirement) and a check in his name (she had no access to her own money) and stole back to the States. She settled in Oregon, living off welfare checks, and, after her husband tracked her down, fought a long battle, which she won.
All the while, she nursed a dream:to help other battered women living overseas. In 2001,she started AODVCC with help from a few small contributions from donors. In 2010,the Department of Justice stepped up with funding. With a free hotline in 175 countries, the organization now supports hundreds of American families in more than 67 countries.Today,at least one family returns safely to the United States each month with Lucas's help.
“We need to make women aware of the problems if they find themselves in an abusive situation,” says Lucas, now remarried.“I was one of the lucky ones.”

(2013·辽宁卷)Here is an astonishing and significant fact:Mental work alone can't make us tired. It sounds absurd. But a few years ago, scientists tried to find out how long the human brain could labor without reaching a stage of fatigue(疲劳).To the amazement of these scientists, they discovered that blood passing through the brain, when it is active, shows no fatigue at all!If we took a drop of blood from a day laborer,we would find it full of fatigue toxins(毒素)and fatigue products. But if we took blood from the brain of an Albert Einstein,it would show no fatigue toxins at the end of the day.
So far as the brain is concerned,it can work as well and swiftly at the end of eight or even twelve hours of effort as at the beginning. The brain is totally tireless. So what makes us tired?
Some scientists declare that most of our fatigue comes from our mental and emotional(情感的)attitudes. One of England's most outstanding scientists,J.A.Hadfield,says,“The greater part of the fatigue from which we suffer is of mental origin. In fact, fatigue of purely physical origin is rare.”Dr.Brill,a famous American scientist, goes even further. He declares,“One hundred percent of the fatigue of a sitting worker in good health is due to emotional problems.”
What kinds of emotions make sitting workers tired? Joy? Satisfaction? No! A feeling of being bored, anger, anxiety, tenseness, worry,a feeling of not being appreciated—those are the emotions that tire sitting workers.Hard work by itself seldom causes fatigue. We get tired because our emotions produce nervousness in the body.

It is known to all that nothing is much precious than time.A famous saying goes,“Time is money”,which shows that time is invaluable. When time is gone,it will never return back. But it is pity that some people didn't make full use of their time. They spend a lot of time sleep, chatting or playing computer game. They don't realize that wasting time is actual equal to killing themselves. We always regret not having made great achievements. However,to be successful, they should first form the habit of being on time.Don't put down what can be done today until tomorrow.Being lazy will eventually lead to failure.

I was 15 when I met my first real teacher,Mrs.Geurin.I didn't know her well at the time but I thought I hated her.
In her first class, she asked us to write a piece about an influential person, place or memory.I chose to write about my lake house,a topic I had already written about and received a vast amount of praise for.Put simply,it was the place that my parents met and fell in love. This teacher knew about my original piece and she was not happy.Throughout the school year,we would pass each other in the hall, never saying a word to each other.
It was not until February of 2012 that we spoke at the most unusual of places,my father's funeral. At first,I was angry that she showed up.Did she even care? She didn't even know him!I stood, watching her give a deep bow to my father's coffin, completely confused! It was not until she approached me that I realized she was crying even harder than I was.
“Kali,”she said,“I am so sorry. My own father passed away just three weeks ago,and I completely feel your pain.”I was shocked.I understood that she had also lost her father, but I didn't see the connection between us just yet.She had rejected my writing. That was not something that I was willing to so easily forgive.
A couple of weeks later, she went into my study hall and placed an envelope on my desk.In the letter, she told me that her father, also had cancer, also passed away in six months' time and he was her best friend too.It was not just this letter, but this act of kindness that taught me my greatest life lesson.Losing has taught us both how to appreciate life. For that lesson,I am always grateful.

Grown-ups are often surprised by how well they remember something they learned as children but have never practiced ever since.A man who has not had a chance to go swimming for years can still swim as well as ever when he gets back in the water. He can get on a bicycle after many years and still ride away.He can play catch and hit a ball as well as his son.A mother who has not thought about the words for years can teach her daughter the poem that begins“Twinkle, twinkle, little star”or remember the story of Cinderella or Goldilocks and the Three Bears.
One explanation is the law of overlearning, which can be stated as follows:Once we have learned something, additional learning trials increase the length of time we will remember it.
In childhood we usually continue to practice such skills as swimming, bicycle riding, and playing baseball long after we have learned them.We continue to listen to and remind ourselves of words such as“Twinkle, twinkle, little star”and childhood tales such as Cinderella and Goldilocks. We not only learn but over learn.
The multiplication tables(乘法口诀表)are an exception to the general rule that we forget rather quickly the things that we learn in school, because they are another of the things we overlearn in childhood.
The law of overlearning explains why cramming(突击学习)for an examination, though it may result in a passing grade,is not a satisfactory way to learn a college course.By cramming,a student may learn the subject well enough to get by on the examination, but he is likely soon to forget almost everything he learned.A little overlearning,on the other hand,is really necessary for one's future development.

Trash Island is the name given to a large area of floating trash in the Pacific Ocean. Most of it is made up of plastic garbage or plastic particles. The problem is that it is damaging the environment.
Trash Island lies between Hawaii and Japan, but that doesn't mean that the trash only comes from those two places. It can come from Asia, the United States and Canada. Approximately 75% of the plastic comes from sources on land, while the other 25% comes from ships at sea. Tons of the plastic produced yearly throughout the world ends up in the ocean. Since this plastic has been beaten by the waves, much of it has been broken down into small pieces that marine life often thinks of as food.
Nurdles are the raw material that is used to make plastic products. Millions are spilled into the ocean every year, which make up about 10% of all the marine plastic pieces. Nurdles are bean-sized pieces of plastic. When these nurdles float in the ocean, they pick up the DDT and the PCBs that are already in the ocean. When plastics break down, chemicals that are not found in nature are released. These become deadly to marine life. They are also harmful to their growth and development.
Thousands of wildlife die every year because of the trash. Many marine animals eat pieces of plastic trash and die. Others eat things like small plastic toys. Birds and fish often mistake the brightly colored nurdles for fish eggs. The toxins(毒素) may cause genetic problems in the wildlife when they gather in their bodies, and the toxins can even poison them.
You can help by cutting back on the amount of plastic you use in your home and in your business. Pick up trash when you see it lying around and deal with it properly. Recycle as much plastic as possible. Help clean up beaches, rivers and streams. When trash collection day comes around, make sure your trash won't be blown away.

In all the world's cultures, people sing, play instruments, and celebrate with music. It plays such an important role in our lives that all fields focus on its study, including one looking at the biology of music.Experts are finding that because of the way our brains process music, learning to play an instrument or just listening to music can have a wide range of benefits.
Music education has received a lot of attention.Learning to play an instrument can help children improve math, science, and language skills. One study in Canada tracked children's IQ scores for nine months, discovering that children who studied music had the biggest test score improvements. The secret may lie in the way reading music and playing notes uses several areas of the brain, increasing our ability to learn school subjects. For example, reading notes improves spatial reasoning skills, which are helpful in solving math problems like fractions.
Music is also used for medical purposes, such as the treatment of diseases which affect memory. The secret lies in the way the brain processes music. One area near the forehead, the medial prefrontal cortex, connects music with memories stored in two other areas:the amygdale and hippocampus. That's why an old song can remind you of something that happened years ago.For patients suffering from diseases like Alzheimer's,listening to music can help unlock buried memories by strengthening musical pathways to memories.

Hong Kong is the world's shark fin capital. But a backlash(强烈抵制) from environmentalists and consumer groups is pressuring restaurants to stop serving dishes containing the shark fin.
Around 50 percent of all shark fins worldwide are traded through Hong Kong. In 2008,around 10,000 tons of fins from 87 countries passed through the city's ports. For environmentalists like Stanley Shea of French-founded Bloom Association, that must change. He is trying to raise awareness in Hong Kong. Shea and his fellow activists have been quite effective. Over the last two years governments in Hong Kong and mainland China,as well as big corporations and hotel chains, have announced they will take shark fin soup off their menus and banquets.
It is in Hong Kong's Sheung Wan District that a lot of the shark fin trade happens. Here the local marine-product industry is suffering. Inside the small shops merchants talk freely about shark fins they sell these days. But in front of a camera nobody wants to mention shark fins;it is just too sensitive, they say. Not far away,at restaurant Lin Heung Kui,shark fin soup is a common dish on the menu. Around lunchtime,it is mostly the elderly and tourists who visit the place.
Shark fin soup has been the food of the rich and wealthy for hundreds of years in China. But times are slowly changing, said Veranica Mak,an anthropologist(人类学家) at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, who researches eating habits.“Not consuming shark fins becomes a kind of signifier to show you are a socially responsible person. In the past, when you wanted to show your social status, people made shark fins a signifier in a banquet, but nowadays this signifier changes,”she said.
Stanley Shea said young people were increasingly interested in social responsibility. He said that helped make his campaign a success in Hong Kong.

If you know how to study wine, it can tell you about its history and qualities. Studying a wine involves using several senses, not just taste.
First, pour the wine into a glass and look at it.It might help to put a piece of white paper behind the glass so you can see the color clearly.Color can tell a lot about the kind of grapes, where the wine is from and its age. A white wine might be almost colorless.White wines go darker with age. White wine made from grapes grown in a cool climate is often paler, with more acid (酸).A white wine from grapes grown in a warmer climate is often yellower, with less acid. Red wines often become paler with age.Red wines grown in warmer climates often have deeper color than those grown in cooler climates.
Next, turn the glass so that the wine moves around inside. This brings air into the wine, so that it gives off its smell.Smell the wine deeply.A wine's smell is actually more telling than its taste. What can you learn about the wine from your“nose”? Is the wine fruity? Do you smell grass or maybe honey? Maybe the smell is like butter or a mineral.
Now it is time to taste the wine.Move it around in your mouth. You may recognize some tastes because you identified (识别) them while smelling the wine. You can also consider the wine's sweetness and its acidity (酸性). You may note the taste of tannin.Tannins are chemicals that are found in the skin and seeds of grapes.Tannins taste bitter. To make a good wine requires a balance between sugar, acidity, tannin and alcohol.

Parents often believe that they have a good relationship with their teenagers. But last summer,Joanna and Henry noticed a change in their older son:suddenly he seemed to be talking more to his friends than to his parents.“The door to his room is always shut.I don't know what he's doing inside,” Joanna noted.
Tina and Mark noticed similar changes in their 14-year-old daughter.“She used to cuddle up(蜷伏) with me on the sofa and talk,” said Mark.“Now we joke that she does this only when she wants something.Sometimes she wants to be treated like a little girl and sometimes like a young lady.”
Before age 11, children like to tell their parents what's on their minds.“In fact, parents are first on the list,” said Michael Riera, author of Uncommon Sense for Parents with Teenagers.“This completely changes during the teen years,” Riera explained.“They talk to their friends first, then maybe their teachers, and their parents last.”
Parents who know what's going on in their teenagers' lives are in the best position to help them.To break down the wall of silence, parents should create chances to understand what their children want to say, and try to find ways to talk and write to them. And they must give their children a mental (精神上的) rest, for children also need freedom, though young.Another thing parents should remember is that to be a friend, not a manager, with their children is a better way to know them.

More men are finding their calling as nurses.
A new study from the United States Census Bureau reports the number of male nurses has doubled since the 1970s.Back then, about 2.7 percent of registered nurses were men.The new study, which tracked data through 2011,finds that men now make up 9.6 percent of all employed nurses in the United States—about 330,000 men in total. Recent years of shortages have led to increased efforts, according to the report, which included recruiting men into the field.
Men,in fact, had been largely kept out of nursing in past decades because nursing schools often refused to admit men.The Supreme Court ruled that practice unconstitutional in 1981 after a case involving a state nursing school.
“The relatively high wages and expanding job opportunities make this field attractive, offering stability even during recessions(经济衰退),”wrote the report's author,Liana Christin Landivar of the US Census Bureau.“And because of high demand, nursing has low unemployment rates compared to other fields.”
Men were found to be more likely to become nurse anesthetists(麻醉师),which is the highest paid nursing occupation, and were found least likely to become licensed practical or licensed vocational nurses, the lowest paid types of nursing. Nurse anesthetists are required to get graduate education, and are certified to give anesthetists and monitor patients recovering from anesthesia.Licensed practical and licensed vocational nurses provide patients with care and may work under the supervision(监督)of a registered nurse. Registered nurses assess patients' health problems and needs, develop and carry out nursing care plans, maintain medical records, and administer care.
For all types of nursing, men earned,on average,$ 60,700 per year, while women earned $51,100 per year.“Even among men and women in the same nursing occupations, men outearn women,”wrote Landivar.

Every morning a woman baked Chapati,an Indian flatbread, for her family and an extra one for a hungry passer-by.She always placed the extra Chapati on the windowsill, for whoever needed to eat it.
She noticed an old man came every day and took the extra Chapati.Instead of expressing gratitude,he would say:“The evil you do remains with you.The good you do comes back to you!” as he went on his way.
This went on day after day.The woman got very angry.
One day she decided to do away with him.So she added poison to the Chapati she prepared for him!

As usual, the man came, picked up the Chapati, saying:“The evil you do remains with you.The good you do comes back to you!”
The old man continued on his way happily, unaware of the anger in the mind of the woman.
Every day,as the woman placed the Chapati on the windowsill, she prayed for her son who had gone to a distant place to seek his fortune. For many months she had no news of him and she always prayed for his safe return.
That night, there was a knock on the door.As she opened it,she was surprised to see her son standing outside. His clothes were torn.He was hungry and weak.
He said,“Mom,while I was a mile away,I was so starved that I collapsed. But luckily an old man passed by.I begged him for some food and he gave me a Chapati, saying ‘This is what I eat every day.Today,I shall give it to you!'”

It was then that she realized what the old man had meant.

There is no question that teenagers need rules, which is often not a difficult thing for parents to give. What can be more challenging is giving teenagers their freedom. It can be difficult to draw the line between the two. However, some issues cannot be changed by discussion and require firm rules. For instance, rules should be established concerning driving the family car.
I will admit that I have no problem coming up with rules. To me they make life easier and they leave no room for questioning. What can be more difficult, however,is giving my teens their freedom.I guess there are really two primary reasons for this. One is that sometimes I am afraid to give them freedom. The second is that I'm not always so sure what the freedom should be.
It helps that I have a husband with whom I can discuss these problems. We talk about them, give our thoughts and then we come up with an agreement.Sometimes one of us might be more unwilling but we know that there comes a time when we really do have to learn how to let go of the reins (缰绳) a bit.
If we try to make life have nothing but rules,we are more likely to see our teen's rebelling (反抗).They need to know that while we do have certain expectations,we also trust them to begin making their own choices and decisions. How else can they do that unless they are given the space and room to do it?
It's really all about balance and I will be the first to admit that it can be a challenge to carry out. However,it is a necessary part of growing up.Yes,teens definitely need rules but they also need freedom.

The strong earthquake on March 11 was the first major test of the nation's earthquake early-warning technology. The quake is the most powerful on record ever to hit Japan. But because of the warning technology, the quake was not as deadly worldwide as some in the past.
A quake in Kobe in 1995 killed 6,400 people.Since then, the Japanese have decided to make their fragile(易受伤害的) islands the place most prepared for an earthquake.
The technology performed well this time.Warnings were broadcast by television, radio and cell phone eight seconds after the quake was first detected on Friday.
The system left some people with the idea that the Japanese predicted an upcoming quake. However, the early warning system is unable to predict quakes. It is based on thousands of sensors across the nation. The system works like an information collection center. It can sense the earliest shake. Then, the system sends out national warnings to all outlets(出口)that connect to a pre-recorded TV broadcast, prewritten text messages and e-mails.
As many quakes happen deep in the ground or far in the sea,the system can usually warn people about 15 seconds before they feel the earth shake. That is to say,the farther you live from the epicenter(震中),the earlier you'll get the warning. However, even 15 or 20 seconds can be enough time for people to make life-saving decisions.
The early-warning systems require many sensors over a wide area. The greater the number of sensors, the more exact the calculation, and the earlier the warning. But it all takes money.Building the network has cost Japan some $1 billion since 1995.

答案 B [推理判断题。根据the farther you live from the epicenter, the earlier you'll get the warning可知你离震中越远,你得到的预警就越早。反向推理,你住得离震中越近,你对地震的反应时间就越短。其他各项没有推理依据。]
4.What is the best title of the passage?
A.Quake tests Japan's systems
B.Quake damages the warning system
C.The early warning system is deployed in Japan

“When I grow up,I want to be...”
Almost all of us have thought about,or been asked to think about our future careers. Our answers may differ greatly.Even now your aspirations may have changed from when you were in primary school.
However,it seems career options aren't only based on personal taste. In a survey carried out by Teens, doctors, lawyers, and bankers were some of most popular careers that people said they hoped to follow. This is in line with a similar survey carried out in the UK in May 2011 by job website monster. co.uk,in which medicine was the top choice among UK teenagers aged between 13 and 17.
Medicine and law are two of the oldest and best known professions.Their prestige may come from the fact that doctors and lawyers are some of the most esteemed members of society, and they make good money.Joining these high-profile professions is often seen as a sign of upward social mobility.
It is equally unsurprising that banking is now one of the most common career choices.Youngsters worldwide think of banking and see the money rolling in.Wealth is increasingly becoming one of the most important indicators of a successful career.British young men list the UK tycoon Alan Sugar,Microsoft founder Bill Gates and Facebook chief Mark Zuckerberg as their top role models “for their wealth”.Just as Chinese teenagers see being a banker as a good and fun pathway to “wealth”.
However, not every child has the makings of doctor, lawyer,or banker. They are those who see fulfillment and happiness in other areas, and many teenagers dare to ink more individuality into their career options. As the Teens' survey discovered,a variety of unconventional jobs—coffee shop owner, gourmet(美食家),waiter at a fast food restaurant—are among teenagers' career choices. They can be equally interesting and rewarding jobs.
With every choice comes responsibility and challenge, and all career paths require specific education and training, you have to learn to balance optimism and confidence with being realistic about your particular talents and skills.

Tarangire National Park is a park in Tanzania. The park itself covers an area of around 2,850 square kilometers making it the sixth largest park of its kind in the country.I recently visited the park to see what it was like.
One of the first sightings upon entering the park I found was a huge herd of elephants. Our guide told us that Tarangire was probably the best place in Tanzania to find large herds of elephants. We continued to watch the elephants as they stood under trees and scratched themselves against the trees to hit the spot of an itch(痒).
To the right of the elephant herd,we noticed a big tree! Our guide informed us this was a Baobab tree and that Tarangire was one of the best national parks in Africa to see so many Baobab trees.
As we continued our drive through the park,we finally reached a watering hole. Our guide warned us that there were lions all around us.Most of them were resting in the shade under bushes, but there was one that was drinking from the watering hole directly in front of us.We then noticed there were a couple of fresh zebra corpses(尸体)—it seemed as if the lions which were resting had killed them!
Our final big sighting was one that none of us were expecting to see.We pulled over to where there was a large gathering of cars, with a sleeping leopard(豹) there! We took photos happily and excitedly and observed its surprising body before returning to our hotel as it was getting late.
So,I hope you enjoyed my description of Tarangire, and that I have inspired you to add this amazing park to your very own Tanzania travel route.

The deadliest hurricane in U.S. history was not Hurricane Katrina. It was the storm that hit Galveston that had been the largest city in Texas,in 1900.That storm killed about 8,000 Americans. It was a heavy storm with 130 mph winds. But,like Katrina,it needn't have been as deadly as it was.
What was different in 1900?For one thing, the storm was stronger than Katrina. For another, the government's attitude towards such storms was far more arrogant(傲慢的) than it is today. The U.S. Weather Service did not even like to use the words “hurricane” or “tornado,”as Erik Larson details in his book about the disaster,Isaac's Storm.Officials did not want to panic anyone. It is a problem that still exists today in other forms—even though they now name our storms well in advance but spend days warning people to prepare for the worst.
Forecasters were overly confident in their primitive technology, which did not yet include satellites. And they were doubtful of Cuban(古巴的) forecasters;before the 1900 storm,U.S. forecasters had a policy of ignoring warnings from Cuba. When the storm was landing, many members of the public had been warned to get to high ground. But too many did not or could not get high enough in time.On the beach, where St.Mary's Orphanage had once stood, rescuers found the bodies of some of the 93 children who had never left.
Afterwards, engineers built a sea wall to protect Galveston—and even raised the entire city, using mud from the Gulf of Mexico. But it remained weak.Partly because of the storm and partly because oil was discovered in Houston soon afterwards,Galveston never really recovered.Texas' economic momentum(势头)shifted, and Galveston became a beach town—with a history and future hit by wind and rain.

A.It happened in the largest city in America.
B.It wasn't as deadly as Hurricane Katrina.
C.Many citizens hadn't had got to places of safety before it came.
D.Advanced technology played a great role in preventing this disaster.
But too many did not or could not get high enough in time 可知C项正确。根据第三段的primitive technology可知D项错误。]
2.What can best describe the government's attitude towards the storm before it came?
A.Indifferent. B.Cautious.
C.Panicked. D.Concerned.
答案 A [细节理解题。根据第二段the government's attitude towards such storms was far more arrogant than it is today.可知政府的态度非常高傲,完全不重视这次飓风的到来,他们以为这只是一次小的风暴,因此indifferent,表示“漠不关心的”,符合题意。]
3.What can be inferred from the text?
A.Hurricane Katrina didn't cause great damage.
B.St. Mary's Orphanage saved 93 children during the hurricane.
C.The citizens didn't get enough warning from the goverment.
D.There were advanced technologies to forecast disasters in 1900.

A.the city was safe because of the sea wall
B.the discovery of oil helped with the recovery of the city
C.the city's economy recovered quickly after the disaster
D.Galveston is a city that has suffered and will suffer storms
答案 D [细节理解题。根据But it remained weak.可排除A。

When it comes to friends,I desire those who will share my happiness and who will fly with me.I seek friends whose qualities illuminate (照亮) me and train me up for love.
When I was in the eighth grade,I had a friend. We were shy and “too serious” about our studies when it was becoming fashionable with our classmates to learn acceptable social behaviors. We said little at school, but she would come to my house and we would sit down with pencils and paper, and one of us would say:“Let's start with a train whistle today.” We would sit quietly together and write separate poems or stories that grew out of a train whistle. Then we would read them aloud. At the end of that school year,we,too, were changing into social creatures and the stories and poems stopped.
When I lived for a time in London,I had a friend. He was in despair and I was in despair. But our friendship was based on the idea in each of us that we would be sorry later if we did not explore this great city because we had felt bad at the time.We met every Sunday for five weeks and found many excellent things. We walked until our despairs disappeared and then we parted.We__gave__London__to__each__other.
For almost four years I have had a remarkable friend whose imagination illuminates mine.We write long letters in which we often discover our strangest selves. Each of us appears, sometimes in a funny way,in the other's dreams. She and I agree that,at certain times,we seem to be parts of the same mind.
It is such comforting companions I wish to keep. One bright hour with their kind is worth more to me than the lifetime services of a psychologist, who will only fill up the healing silence necessary to those darkest moments in which I would rather be my own best friend.
