For the past few months, my three-year-old daughter has spent an hour
every week learning a foreign language. She walks into a small room in a local
school, where she and a handful of three and four-year-old spend the next hour
dancing to “La Vaca Lola”, a song about a Spanish cow, creating finger
puppets(木偶) to voice what they like and
don't like (me gusta, no me gusta) and shouting out which animals are big
(grande) or small (pequeno).
She tells us little about the classes. In fact, for the first few weeks,
nothing at all. I begin to wonder if it was a huge mistake (each lesson works
out at about 9) but then I show her “La Vaca Lola” on YouTube. She shouts vaca
with enthusiasm and with what I hope is a Spanish accent.
The wish to enroll(使……加入) her in language lessons
came, like most things, gradually and then in a sudden rush. In my day job, I
read and edit stories about the Chinese economy. For a long time, I felt that
it would be good for her to learn another language but I had no great plan as
to when.
Then I read Edward Luce's The
Retreat of Western Liberalism and all my thoughts and worry about the
economy combined into a panic. Waking in a sweat, it seemed obvious that if my
daughter was to have any kind of future, she would have to learn another
language. Ideally (理想地)
immediately.
I thought about Mandarin Chinese, one of the top 10 languages most
important for our future, according to the British Council (others include
Arabic, French, German, Portuguese, Italian, Russian, Dutch and Japanese). But
there were no classes for young children nearby. There were, however, local
Spanish classes—the number-one language on the list. When she started to sing "Incy
Wincy Spider" in Spanish and English—helped by a Spanish nursery
worker-our
decision was made.
(1)What can we learn about the author's daughter from the first paragraph
A.She uses finger puppets to make her voice heard.
B.She is the oldest student in her Spanish class.
C.She learns Spanish by dancing to songs.
D.She has learnt Spanish for one month.
(2)How did the author feel about her daughter's class at first
A.Proud. B.Surprised. C.Delighted D.Doubtful.
(3)Why did the author ask her daughter to learn a foreign language
A.To prepare her for the coming school education.
B.To equip her for her future.
C.To encourage her to have belief in herself.
D.To develop her interest in singing.
(4)What made the author decide to enroll her daughter in Spanish lessons
A.Her performance. B.Her great interest.
C.The nursery worker's suggestion. D.The fast-growing economy.

Traditionally, profiting from forests often meant capitalizing on timber (木材)——choosing commercial timber. Yet increasingly, there is an understanding that it's of greater significance to keep trees standing than cut them down for financial profit. Money is not everything. We have to recognize real and lasting value is from natural resources. But money is a fact of life.
Good news is that we can expect entire natural woodland is left undamaged and still provides a revenue (收益) stream. Leaving woodland complete does not necessarily mean that we do not touch it at all. Conservation work may involve building back biodiversity or the removal of foreign plant species.
A healthy woodland system can provide a range of yields (产物). Besides eatable yields——top fruit, berries, and food crops, it produces substances for chemical use. The non-timber forest products provided by natural ecosystems will vary significantly depending on where they are. But there're almost always ways to explore to acquire revenue.
A project in the U.K. shows woodland is also a draw for visitors. It engages a community who creates a sustainable area of woodland. The sale of handmade wooden items and non-timber forest products is involved. But the community largely obtains revenue by opening up parts of the natural woodland to the public with an adventure playground and outdoor recreational activities on the site. It also offers courses on nest building, special wildlife events and more. The project is thought to have great uniqueness. In terms of revenue, it centers round the existing natural land; the yields woodland can provide become side products.
Recreational activities, tours, and classes are just the commencement. A rich and biodiverse woodland can be an ecosystem that draws in people looking for a beautiful place to stay. Woodland has great value in ecological and social terms. And when you nurse it, it could also add to the income from your land.
25.What do people increasingly think about forest conservation
A.It is difficult to carry out.
B.It means making full use of timber.
C.It outweighs financial development.
D.It should centre on building back biodiversity.
26.Why is the project considered unique
A.It makes woodland itself the main product.
B.It focuses on protecting natural land.
C.It aims to promote ecotourism.
D.It provides educational experiences.
27.What does the underlined word "commencement" mean in the last paragraph
A.Intention. B.Wish. C.Exception. D.Beginning.
28.Which is a suitable title for the text
A.Woodland Brings Profit While Staying Complete
B.A Project Creates Sustainable Woodland
C.Forest Conservation Has Been a Top Priority
D.Non-timber Products Help Gain More Revenue

A remarkable new study on how whales behaved when attacked by humans in the 19th century has implications for the way they react to changes caused by humans in the 21st century.
The paper is authored by Whitehead and Rendellt at Dalhousie University and their research addresses an age-old question: if whales are so smart, why did they hang around to be killed The answer They didn't. Using newly logbooks detailing the hunting of whales in the north Pacific, the authors discovered that within just a few years, the strike rate of the whalers' harpoons (鱼叉) fell by 58%. This simple fact leads to an astonishing conclusion: that information about what was happening to them was being collectively shared among the whales, who made vital changes to their behaviour. They learned quickly from their mistakes.
"Sperm whales have a traditional way of reacting to attacks from orca (杀人鲸)," notes Whitehead. Before humans, orca were their only predators (捕食者), against whom sperm whales form defensive circles, their powerful tills held outwards to keep predators at bay, "But such techniques just made it easier for the whalers to kill them," says Whitehead.
Sperm whales are highly socialized animals, able to communicate over great distances. Information about the new dangers may have been passed on in the same way they share knowledge about feeding grounds. They also possess the largest brain on the planet. It is not hard to imagine that they understood what was happening to them.
The hunters themselves realized the whales' efforts to escape. They saw that the animals appeared to communicate the threat within their attacked groups. Abandoning their usual defensive formations, the whales swam upwind to escape the hunters, ships, themselves wind-powered.
Now, just as whales are beginning to recover from the industrial destruction by 20th-century whaling fleets, whose steamships and grenade harpoons no whale could escape from, they face new threats created by our technology. "They're having to learn not to get hit by ships, cope with the depredations (劫掠) of long line fishing, the changing source of their food due to climate change," Whitehead says. "The same sort of urgent social learning the animals experienced in the whale wars of two centuries ago is reflected in the way they negotiate today's uncertain world."
29.What is the new study mainly about
A.Whales' social lives.
B.Whales' emotional intelligence.
C.Whales' reaction to climate changes.
D.Whales' behavior under human attack.
30.What caused Whales to make changes to escape the hunters' ship
A.The wind in their favor.
B.Their powerful physical strength.
C.The shared ship attack information.
D.Their usual defensive formations.
31.What does the author intend to do in Paragraph 5
A.To provide background information.
B.To summarize the previous paragraphs.
C.To introduce a new topic for discussion.
D.To add more related evidence for the study.
32.What's Whitehead's attitude towards whales' future survival
A.Pessimistic. B.Optimistic. C.Cautious. D.Unclear.

Football clubs have existed since the 15th century, but unorganized and without official status. It is therefore hard to decide which the first football club was.
Early clubs were formed by former school students. 33. In the beginning, football was dominated by public school teams. Later, teams consisting of workers made up the majority.
Another change took place when some clubs became willing to pay the best players to join their team. 34. In the 1880s, the interest in the game moved ahead to a level that tickets were sold to the matches. And finally, in 1885 professional football was legalized. Three years later, the Football League was established.
35. Football Association Challenge Cup (FA Cup) became the first important competition in 1871. The following year a match between England and Scotland was played for the first time. That was followed by 4,000 people at Hamilton Crescent.
Football was for a long time a British phenomenon. 36. The first game outside Europe occurred in Argentina in 1867. But it was foreign British workers who were involved and not its domestic citizens.
Then the Federation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) was founded. England and the other British countries did not join FIFA from the start. They had invented the game and saw no reason to obey an association. 37.
In 1908, football was included as an official sport in the Olympic Games. Until the first FIFA World Cup was played in 1930, the Olympic Games football tournament ranked as the greatest on a national level.
A.Other milestones were now to follow.
B.Still, they joined in the following year.
C.Thus, football was played all over the world.
D.But it gradually spread to other European countries.
E.Until now, FIFA still plays a major role in the world.
F.And the first of this kind was formed in Sheffield in 1855.
G.The motivation behind this was not only to win more matches.

I'm more than glad to receive your email, which tells me you have trouble remembering Chinese words. I have some advice on how to improve your vocabulary.
Firstly, you should read aloud as often as possible, for it can develop your language sense. Secondly, you must read more. Reading can certainly enlarge your vocabulary and you can1 easily find plenty of reading materials that interest you. Thirdly, every time you meet a new word, it's not enough to just write it down. The more you repeat it, the better you'll remember it. Finally, you need to put your words into practice. Only in this way can you use them skillfully.
I hope the above advice can give you some help.
Best wishes!

24.(2019·西安模拟)阅读理解
【答案】(1)C
(2)D
(3)B
(4)A
【知识点】推理判断题;细节理解题;故事阅读类;记叙文
【解析】【分析】本文是一篇记叙文,作者让自己的女儿学习一种外语的原因以及学习过程中出现的一些问题。
(1)考查细节理解。根据第一段中的“She walks into a small room in a local school, where she and a handful of three and four-year-old spend the next hour dancing to La Vaca Lola”可知,她和几个3、4岁大的孩子在一起通过唱歌跳舞学西班牙语。故选C。
(2)考查推理判断。根据第二段中的”She tells us little about the classes I begin to wonder if it was a huge mistake (each lesson works out at about 9)“可知,作者的女儿从来不会谈起她的西班牙语课,这让作者很怀疑自己是否该给女儿报班学习。故作者最初对女儿的课感觉是可疑的。故选D。(3)考查细节理解。根据倒数第二段中的"it seemed obvious that if my daughter was to have any kind of future, she would have to learn another language."可知,作者认为自己的女儿若想有一个美好的未来就必须掌握一门外语。故选B。
(4)考查细节理解。根据最后一段中的”When she started to sing 'Incy Wincy Spider‘ in Spanish and English-helped by a Spanish nursery worker-our decision was made.?“当她开始用西班牙语和英语演唱“Incy Wincy Spider”时,在一位西班牙托儿所工作人员的帮助下,我们做出了决定。可知,是女儿的表现使作者决定让女儿学西班牙语。故选A。
【点评】本题考点涉及细节理解和推理判断两个题型的考查,是一篇故事类阅读,要求考生准确捕捉细节信息,并根据上下文进行逻辑推理,从而选出正确答案。

I hope the above advice can give you some help.
