第三部分 阅读理解 (共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)

Rice is an important part of many people’s diets. Researchers from the Harvard School of Public Health in Massachusetts have released a report about rice. It shows that eating white rice increases the risk of Type Two diabetes (糖尿病). However, eating brown rice reduces the risk of the disease.
The World Health Organization says more than two hundred and twenty million people worldwide have diabetes. Type Two diabetes results when the body cannot effectively use the sugar it produces.
More than thirty-nine thousand men and one hundred and fifty-seven thousand women took part in the study. They were asked about their diet and day-to-day activities, as well as any pre-existing diseases. The study found that the people who ate five or more servings of white rice per week had a seventeen percent increased risk of developing Type Two diabetes. But those who ate two or more servings of brown rice a week had an eleven percent reduced risk of getting the disease.
Brown rice is the grain in its natural form. White rice results after it has been refined. This involves removing the outer cover. Only the inner white kernel is left. White rice is often enriched to replace some nutrients lost during the refining process.
Qi Sun is the lead writer of the report. He says the outer parts of brown rice slow down the work of the body’s digestive enzymes (消化酶) into starch. This means that the release of sugar into the bloodstream is slower after eating brown rice compared to white rice.
A diet of foods that quickly release sugar into the bloodstream has been linked with a greater risk of Type Two diabetes. The exact reason for this is not known.
Doctor Sun says less refined grains have more nutritional value than refined grains. He says replacing white rice with whole grains like whole wheat or barley could result in a thirty-six percent lower chance of developing Type Two diabetes. He says people should replace white rice and other refined carbohydrates with whole grains whenever possible.
However, brown rice does not last as long as white rice because of the oil-rich layer of bran. This makes it less usable in poor communities. The International Rice Research Institute is working to develop kinds of white rice whose starch is released more slowly.
51. What is the exact reason of Type Two diabetes?
A. Eating too much white rice. B. Sugar in the bloodstream.
C. digestive enzymes in the starch. D. It is still unknown to us.
52. What does the underlined word “refined” in the fourth paragraph mean?
A. Processed. B. Cut. C. Struck. D. Developed.
53. Which of the following is true?
A. White rice has more nutritional value than whole grains.
B. The oil-rich layer of bran can prevent the brown rice from going bad.
C. Eating brown rice may reduce the risk of developing Type Two diabetes.
D. The outer cover of brown rice will speed the release of sugar into the bloodstream.
54. What’s the best title of the passage?
A. The importance of rice B. Brown rice and white rice
C. Diabetes and rice eating D. Sugar and diabetes

Why texting harms your IQ
The regular use of text messages and e-mails can lower the IQ more than twice as much as smoking marijuana (大麻). That is the statement of researchers who have found that tapping away on a mobile phone or computer keypad or checking for electronic messages temporarily knocks up to 10 points off the user’s IQ. This rate of decline in intelligence compares unfavorably with the four-point drop in IQ associated with smoking marijuana, according to British researchers, who have described the phenomenon of improved stupidity as “infomania”. The research conducted by Hewlett Packard, the technology company, has concluded that it is mainly a problem for adult workers, especially men.
It is concluded that too much use of modern technology can damage a person’s mind. It can cause a constant distraction of “always on” technology when employees should be concentrating on what they are paid to do. Infomania means that they lose concentration as their minds remain fixed in an almost permanent state of readiness to react to technology instead of focusing on the task in hand. The report also added that, in a long term, the brain will be considerably shaped by what we do to it and by the experience of daily life. At a microcellular level, the complex networks of nerve cells that make up parts of the brain actually change in response to certain experiences.
Too much use of modern technology can be damaging not only to a person’s mind, but to their social relationship. 1100 adults were interviewed during the research. More than 62 per cent of them admitted that they were addicted to checking their e-mails and text messages so often that they scrutinized work-related ones even when at home or on holiday. Half said that they always responded immediately to an email and will even interrupt a meeting to do so. It is concluded that infomania is increasing stress and anxiety and affecting one’s characteristics. Nine out of ten thought that colleagues who answered e-mails or messages during a face-to-face meeting were extremely rude.
The effects on IQ were studied by Dr Glenn Wilson, a psychologist at University of London. “This is a very real and widespread phenomenon,” he said. “We have found that infomania will damage a worker’s performance by reducing their mental sharpness and changing their social life. Companies should encourage a more balanced and appropriate way of working.”
55. We can learn from the passage that “infomania” ______.
A. has a positive influence on one’s IQ
B. results in the change of part of the brain
C. lies in the problem of lack of concentration
D. is caused by too much use of modern technology
56. The research mentioned in the passage is most probably about ______.
A. the important fun_ction of advanced technology
B. the damage to one’s brain done by unhealthy habits
C. the relevance between IQ and use of modern technology
D. the relationship between intelligence and working effectiveness
57. The underlined word “scrutinized” probably means “______”.
A. examined carefully B. copied patiently C. corrected quickly D. admitted freely
C
Most of us long for relationships in which we are loved and accepted. Our hearts’ desire is to give and receive love in relationships that make us feel that even if others disagree with what we do or say, they still love us, accept us, and appreciate what we give to the world. While it would be wonderful to have these types of relationships with all people, we know that’s hard to do. However, we can have such relationships with some others, but only when we first have them with ourselves—and, strangely, this is often the hardest relationship of all.
?? Do you love yourself? You may think you do, but do you really? There’s only one way to find out---by taking a close look at what you think, say, and do. You may not like some of what you find, but if you are serious about really loving yourself, you can use this insight to do some positive inner work. Here’re three ways for gaining greater personal insight for deeper love:
Listen Closely to Your Thoughts
?? Your thoughts will determine your actions. One thing helping you to listen to your thoughts is keeping a journal. It is not necessary for you to write in it every day, but it helps to record various insights you gain as you go about your life. Instead of using a big notebook, you might use a small notepad that you can keep in your pocket for easy access to record your thoughts as they occur to you. Whichever method you choose, what’s most important is that you write your thoughts down. It will help you know what’s in your heart.
Be Honest with Yourself
?? To do this, you should pay attention to your actions. Actions speak louder than words, and they always tell the truth. If you say you love your job, but your actions say otherwise, which do you think is more reliable? On the other hand, if you say you’re not good at a certain job, but your actions say otherwise, that’s also important. What do you do with this insight? You can use it to make more positive choices in your life. By being honest with yourself, you will act according to truth instead of just what you tell yourself.
Take Quiet Time to Listen to Your Inner Voice
?? This is similar to the first point, but it takes a step further---beyond the natural mind to the heart that cannot be seen. You may want to use your quiet time to think deeply. However you use this time, the key is to shut out all of the noise around you by focusing deep within yourself. Breathing deeply during quiet time will also help you focus. I know it’s hard to find quiet time during a particularly busy day, but it’s so important---even if it’s just 10 minutes a day and you have to hide somewhere to get it. Quiet time can really make a difference in your life.
? ?Despite what your mind may be telling you, you can have love with no limits. The key is to unconditionally love yourself first.
58. By looking deep into what we think, say, and do, we can _____.
? A. know whether we really love ourselves
? B. appreciate what we give to the world
? C. realize what type of relationship we long for
? D. know whether we are loved and accepted by others
59. An important way for gaining personal insight is to _____.
? A. do some positive inner work B. keep a journal wherever you go
? C. look closely at what others say about us D. pay attention to our thoughts
60. The insight we gain from our actions can help us _____.
? A. focus our attention on our jobs B. make more positive choices in our life
? C. act according to the truth D. tell the differences between our words and our actions
61. It can be learned from the passage that if we want to have love without limits, we must first of all _______.
? A. be honest with ourselves anytime B. give our love to others generously?
? C. love ourselves unconditionally D. take quiet time and think deeply
D
The trip to the United Stated opened my eyes to the fact that there are a lot of similarities as well as differences between American youth and French youth.
The first difference is in appearance. Going around in the U.S., I found that American youth do not really care about their appearance. In the morning, they choose something in their closet and wear it with another thing, often of different colors and styles, without wondering whether their choices make them look strange. The reason behind this is that they don’t care what people look like, but are just interested in their ideas. I think it’s great, but it also causes problems. Since they don’t care about their appearance, they don’t really care about their weight. Often they get fat without realizing it.
There are differences in relationships too. When the American youth fall in love, they don’t really think of the future. Also, there are differences in the rules concerning behavior that is allowed. In some respects, the French are more accepting. For example, in America it is generally unacceptable to make physical display of love. Lovers, in theory, can’t kiss or hold each other everywhere they want. People think that not showing love in public places is a way to respect others. On the contrary, the French youth can do almost everything they want.
With regard to other types of relationships, there are also big differences. Americans act differently from French people in front of unknown people. When an American girl, for example, arrives in front of people she has never met before, she will talk with them, trying to create a kind of bond between her and this new circle of people. The French girls will just think about rather than really do this kind of thing because they are too shy and lacking in self-confidence.
To finish, I noticed that in American classes, when pupils want to say or ask something, they just do it. In general, they don’t really care how the others will judge them. In France, it’s not the same case. If somebody wants to ask something, he/she will think about it before speaking up. I appreciate the freedom in Americans’ behavior, ideas, and ways of expressing themselves.
62. American young people _______.
A. are just interested in people’s clothes????? B. show more interest in people’s ideas
C. care more about their weight???????????? D. are more concerned about appearance
63. When meeting with strangers, American girls will not _______.
A. try to establish a type of relationship with them B. have faith in themselves??
C. start to create a conversation D. behave in a way similar to French girls
64. It can be inferred from the passage that French youth may think more about ______.
? A. their relationship’s future ? B. their public images
? C. their physical displays D. their lover’s ideas
65. The passage is mainly about the______ between American youth and French youth.
A. similarities ?B. friendship ?? C. differences D. differences and the similarities
第二卷 (非选择题,共40分)
第四部分:任务型阅读(共10小题;每小题1分,满分10分)
请认真阅读下列短文,并根据所读内容在文章后表格中的空格里填入最恰当的单词。
注意:每个空格1个单词。
Time, a faithful company of our life, is a universal topic. People are always curious about what it is, how it travels and who it meets.
Stephen Hawking, one of the world’s smartest physicists, once said. “I’m fascinated by time.”
Many of us are, and the popularity of time travel novels, movies and TV series has proved that. After Palace and Startling by Each Step achieved astonishing ratings last year, Palace 2 aired on January 20, attracting time travel fans back to TV.
Woody Allen’s movie Midnight in Paris achieved great success. It was nominated for Best Picture, Directing, Original Screenplay and Art Direction for the 2012 Academy Awards.
Dream of heroism
Time travel TV series and movies connect both today and the past, thus offering room for imagination. Imagination creates a chance for the young to fulfill a dream that is hard to achieve in reality.
Chinese writer Xi Juan is a pioneer of time-travel stories in China. In 1993 she published a love story about a young woman time traveling to ancient times. The leading role’s modern personality and perception of love help her win the heart of a cool, handsome martial art master. Such a plot satisfies female fans’ love fantasy.
Starting from the late 1990s, novels about men traveling back to the past prevailed (盛行), with a Step into the Past as the most popular example. In these stories, the male leading roles accomplish great things with their modern skills and wisdom.
It is usually “a dream of heroism come true”, along with enviable romances.
Eye candy
“I’m hooked by the shows because they are characterized by dramatic and poetic love and have eye-pleasing actors,” Xia Xiaoyan, who works for a foreign-owned enterprise in Shanghai, explained her love for time travel TV series.
Her comment echoes a 2011 survey by Creat Marketing Research Co Ltd in China. When asked about what is so appealing about time travel TV series, 21 percent of respondents answered, “These attractive characters.”
A bigger reason behind the popularity of time travel stories, however, is the relaxation they offer, according to the survey.
Cai Yinong agrees. “Many people are facing tremendous pressure in their fast-paced lives, so this genre is more relaxing than other shows as it provides people with a terrific outlet to escape reality,” Cai told China Daily.
Cultural homesickness
“Which dynasty would you like to live in if you could travel to the past?” asked a survey launched by Shanghai University and Shanghai Social Sciences Association last December.
About 60 percent of the 2,543 respondents chose Tang Dynasty, while Qing Dynasty, and the Spring and Autumn and Warring States periods were the other top two destinations.
The survey results reflects people’s definition of the good days: prosperous economy and culture, steady society, fair and uncorrupted politics, and opening up to the outside world.
As for the movie Midnight in Paris, it features modernity versus cultural homesickness. The New York Times commented, “The past seems so much more vivid, more substantial, than the present. The good old days are so attractive because we were not around, however much we wish we were.”

Dear Lily,Very glad to hear from you. As for the campaign called Clearing Your Plate, it advocates
that people should eat up all the food in their dishes when having meals, aimed at building an environmentally-friendly society. The campaign is launched for several reasons. Firstly, while eating out in restaurants, we tend to order more food than we actually need, which leads to much waste and has aroused much concern. Secondly, with the saved food, we can help those starving people who live in poor areas. Besides, saving food is a traditional Chinese virtue we should never forget. In our city, people come to realize the importance of saving food. In restaurants, people order the food based on their needs and take away the leftovers. In the school canteens, less food is thrown away in the food waste collector. Local government officials stop having meals in expensive restaurants for no good reason. Personally, I’m strongly in favor of the campaign. We should save not only food but also other valuable resources like water and electricity. ( 共160 words )
