How did Paul became a “big guy” from an underdog?
Paul was a basketball player on his school team. Although he knew quite clearly that being only 1.6 metres tall made him an underdog, he was still determined and hardworking. Instead of giving up,using Bogues as his inspiration, he worked so hard and kept practising jump shots even when the coach gave him no chance to play.
Later on, here was a chance for him. With his teammates’ recognition, support as well as his self-recommendation, he was allowed to play. In the game, Paul showed his real skills and helped the team win. The coach called him a big guy and told him that he had earned his place on the team. He became a top dog.

I think Paul was a dedicated player because he spent hours practising even though he was never chosen by the coach.
Activity 6. Group Activity
2 Why did the coach call Paul “big guy” What do you think the coach might have learnt from his experiences with Paul
Because Paul was the one who saved the game and helped the team win. The call of “big guy” forms a sharp contrast to his height (1.6 meters), which shows the coach’s trust, praise, encouragement, approval and appreciation of him.
He may have learnt that he should not have judged a person by his natural condition. He should have been more open-minded, instead of being confined by stereotypes.
stereotype: fixed idea or image that many people have of a particular type of person or thing, but which is often not true in reality.

Paul and I were on our school basketball team, The Lions. We loved basketball and were both huge (fan) of the NBA. My favourite player was LeBron James while Paul's favourite player was Tyrone Bogues. Paul was only 1.6 metres tall, as tall as Bogues. Paul knew that (be) shorter than other players meant that he had to practise (much). Paul always used Bogues as his (inspire). Our coach was not so sure. Trying out many times just making the team, Paul was still usually on the bench, being just replacement, which was really tough on him. Everyone knew Paul had real skills, (work) really hard and had a strong desire (play) for the team. However, Paul didn't get a chance. This week, The Lions were playing our main competitors, The Bears, a team
record this season had been perfect and who hadn't lost a single game. Paul didn't know he'd soon get himself (recognise).
