过去进行时和while/when/as 引导
过去时间状语从句连用,形成复合句。
意为“当....时候,.....”
when和while与过去进行时连用的情况
1.when 引导的时间状语从句可以指时间点,也可以指时间段。while只能指时间段。因此,when引导的时间状语从句,动词可以时终止性动词,也可以是延续性动词。而while必须是延续性动词。
eg:They arrived while we were having dinner.
They arrived when we were having dinner.
When he came yesterday, we were playing basketball.
2.由when 引导的时间状语从句,如果主句用过去进行时,从句用一般过去时。表示一个动作正在进行的时候另一个动作(突然)发生了,强调后一动作发生的突然性。
Eg: We were talking when the teacher came in.
我们正在讲话,老师(突然)进来了。 也可以用while表达,但有细微区别。
while we were talking , the teacher came in.我们正在讲话的时候,老师进来了。
3. 当主句和从句的动作都是延续或同时发生的,两句都用过去进行时的时候,多用while 引导。

The driver of the car drove away as quickly as possible. The woman on the motorbike was young from a foreign country. She fell down and hurt her leg badly.
I walked up to the woman and called the police at once. The police arrived a few minutes later, and then I gave the video of the accident to the police. Luckily, I took the number of the car in my video. Then I helped them send the woman to the hospital.
With the help of my video, the police caught the car driver soon. I was very happy to do a good thing.
