Paragraph 1:
This time I would not hide my desire any more. Determined to follow my heart, I explained to my father how
I felt. I told him that I wanted to go to a college to learn to fly instead of being a farmer. After saying this, I waited
nervously for his reaction. To my surprise, he approved my request, and he told me he was moved by my
perseverance. With his support and my efforts, I was admitted into my ideal college.
At the graduation ceremony, with my father present, I, as “Best Pilot”, had to deliver a speech. In my speech,
I shared with the audience my story about how a teenager realized his dream. Faced with difficulties, I took a path
that led me do something that needed passion, training and practice. I also owed my success to my father’s support.
Without his understanding, I couldn’t have pursued my dream. At the end of my speech, I spotted my father’s
watery eyes, and said, “Dad, I made it!” His face lit up with pride.

fear of the unknown, and finally, become more confident.

Summer is right around the corner and vacation is top of mind. We’ve rounded up destinations where you can have a great vacation with your kids at a great price.
Fort Myers, Florida
If you can handle the heat, head to Florida. The white-sand beaches of Fort Myers and Sanibel offer plenty of free, outdoor fun. When it gets too hot, you can compare your shell findings to those found at the Bailey-Matthews National Shell Museum, the only museum in the U.S. entirely for seashells.
Mackinac Island, Michigan
In the summer, there’s no place like Mackinac Island, a National Historic Landmark free from chain hotels and cars. Instead, your family will be treated to an old-time experience filled with world-famous Mackinac Island Fudge and days spent biking around the island or cruising (航游) along the coast. Kids can head to the large pool or spend the day playing games and mini golf.
Rincón, Puerto Rico
The surf town of Rincón on the western side of the island is perfect for families, with its beautiful beaches and great waves. You can book a room at the Rincón of the Seas Grand Caribbean Hotel, or save on food by reserving a villa with a kitchen.
Winter Park, Colorado
If you’re looking to escape the heat, Winter Park is a great destination in the summer. In a single day, families can enjoy hiking, ropes courses, and climbing walls. Tickets are $10 for kids at and under the age of 4 and $59 for people aged 5 and over.
21. What do the four destinations have in common

B. They are all favored by surfers.

Mark Smith and Jarryd Haines are good friends. The two boys from Sydney have known each other for most of their lives. Both of them enjoy playing Australian football.
A few years ago, when Mark was nine, he developed brain cancer. The disease robbed the boy of his sight, part of his hearing and his ability to play his favorite sport. However, throughout the years, Jarryd remained his closest friend. They still share their love of Australian football. And they still enjoy talking about the Sydney Swans, their favorite team.
Two weeks ago, I took my seat at Sydney Cricket Ground to watch the Swans. The old stadium was crowded with fans. Shortly into the second quarter, I heard some great commentary(实况报道) from a boy. Play by play, Jarryd was bringing the game to life. I turned and saw him. Mark was sitting next to him.
Although he cannot see anymore, Mark still loves the Swans very much. Usually, he goes to the stadium and listens to the commentary on the radio. However, in the second quarter of that match, the radio system broke down. That was when his friend Jarryd stepped in.
I hardly looked at the Swans and Buddy, the team’s star player. Instead, I was focusing on Jarryd and Mark. “What’s happening now, mate ” Mark asked. “Don’t worry. Mark,” Jarryd replied. “Okay. Buddy’s got it. Will he go for it He’s going for it! It’s his tenth goal! Buddy is on fire!” Mark listened carefully. He was lost in the magic of Australian football brought to life by his friend.
Sports can be competitive. However, they can also allow us to share wonderful moments with others, may they be close friends or perfect strangers. Here, Jarryd and Mark have moved me, and perhaps some other spectators, with the best commentary.
24. Why didn’t Mark play Australian football any longer
A. He took up new hobby.
B. He lost his sight and hearing.
C. He was unable to play it because of his disease.
D. His favorite team-the Sydney Swans lost the game.
25. What did Jarryd do for Mark at the stadium
A. He helped him step into the stadium.
B. He made Buddy score his tenth goal.
C. He was lost in the magic of Australian football.
D. He provided commentary for him when the radio system failed.
26. Which of following words best describe Jarryd
A. Humorous and ambitious. B. Considerate and patient.
C. Generous and active. D. Competitive and talkative.
27. What is the text mainly about
A. A live commentary. B. The Swans and Buddy.
C. An Australian football match. D. The precious friendship between two boys.

Every year, millions of birds fly between Mexico’s Sierra Madre Oriental mountains and the Gulf of Mexico from August to November to escape cold temperatures, giving rise to an event known as the “River of Raptors”, which brings hundreds of foreign birdwatchers to the coastal area of Veracruz.
“Many of my customers have been at other famous bird migration sites but say they have never seen anything as grand as the ‘River of Raptors’ in Veracruz,” said Steven Koevoet, a birdwatching guide who has shown visitors places in Yucatan and Veracruz for over 25 years.
Yet the yearly event has not led to a large increase in ecotourism (生态旅游). Critics suggest the lack of increased ecotourism is mainly caused by the Mexican government’s failure to encourage tourism away from its beach resorts. Environmentalists believe high levels of violence and environmentally unfriendly practices are also problems for developing ecotourism in the states of Chiapas and Veracruz. Violence has stopped birdwatching for years in some places, where the activity was an important source of income for local communities.
But, environmental groups, universities and farmers in Veracruz are trying to change this. Angel Viveros, a rancher (大农场主), uses land owned by his family for activities including birdwatching, horse riding, skydiving and hiking. Supported by the non-profit group Pronatura Veracruz, which studies and counts the birds in the yearly migration, he is now receiving hundreds of visitors yearly. Local coffee producers organize coffee tastings and educational talks about the importance of birds in spreading seeds. A green, bird-friendly stamp for those producers could be the next step. One retiree who has been visiting Veracruz since 2002 had this to say, “Apart from feeling the physical relaxation, it is like something spiritual ... there are no words to describe what it feels like to see the river of birds.”
28. What is the “River of Raptors” known for
A. The rich variety of birds. B. The long distance of migration.
C. The size of birds’ migrating. D. The number of birdwatchers.
29. Why is Steven Koevoet mentioned
A. To highlight the popularity of the event. B. To explain his intention to be a guide.
C. To show his devotion to local tourism. D. To prove the impressiveness of the event.
30. What prevents the development of ecotourism in Mexico according to critics
A. The lack of government support.
B. High levels and frequency of violence.
C. Disagreement among local communities.
D. The adoption of not eco-friendly methods.
31. What can be inferred about ecotourism from the last paragraph
A. People hold different attitudes to it.
B. Joint efforts are made to develop it.
C. It has an uncertain future in Veracruz.
D. It is a major source of income for the locals.
D
Research has shown that people tend to get more happiness from spending their money on experiences, such as travel and entertainment (娱乐), than on things like clothes and electronic products. But are people happier during the purchased (购买的) experience itself Or does the happiness come more from expecting or remembering the experience
A new study, published in the Journal of Experimental Social Psychology, offers an answer. Our experimental purchases not only bring us greater pleasure in terms of expectation and remembrance than do our material (物质的) purchases, but they also bring us greater in-the-moment enjoyment, the study found.
For the study, the researchers recruited (招募) 2,635 adults who agreed to receive texts at any time during the day. The texts began with a happiness question, which asked the participants (参与者) to tell how they felt “right now”, ranging from very bad to very good. Half of them were then asked if they had made a material purchase within the past hour, such as clothing or electronic goods. The others were asked if they had made an experimental purchase within the past hour, such as eating in a restaurant or attending a concert.
The researchers found that the purchasers of the experiences express higher levels of happiness than the purchasers of the material goods, no matter how much the purchases cost.
To deal with possible differences in types of purchasers, the researchers carried out a second study in which they researched more than 5,000 adults. “We still found the same result,” said Amit Kumar, the study’s lead author (发起人).
“If you want to be happier, it might be wise to shift some of your spending away from material goods and a bit more towards experiences,” Kumar said. “That would probably lead to greater happiness.”
32. Why does the writer come up with two questions in paragraph 1
A. To explain a fact. B. To introduce a new study.
C. To compare different researches. D. To doubt the view of researchers.
33. What did the researchers text the participants for
A. To ask them about their spending plans.
B. To understand their needs and spending habits.
C. To find out their purchasing behavior and feelings.
D. To know the change in their purchasing choices.
34. Which has the similar meaning to the underlined word “shift” in the last paragraph
A. change. B. apply. C. increase. D. satisfy.
35. What does the new study find about people’s purchases
A. People prefer to purchase material goods instead of experiences.
B. People get more happiness from spending money than earning money.
C. The level of happiness from purchases depends on how much they cost.
D. Experimental purchases bring people greater happiness than material ones.
