Sitting on the edge of the world, Sydney is considered as one of the world’s beautiful cities. Here are some things you should do and see in Sydney.
Explore Sydney’s hottest neighborhood
Many big-ticket attractions can be found in or around the Circular Quay area, right by the port. Here, you can get on ferries ( 轮 渡 ) to faraway islands or go exploring on foot with the Sydney Opera House, Royal Botanic Gardens and Museum of Contemporary all nearby.
Take side trips
Popular among outdoor types, the rough Blue Mountains—about two hours by train west of the city—promises winter skiing, excellent hiking and kangaroo sightings. Walking through the national park, travelers will watch forests, waterfalls, natural caves, small villages and rock formations.
The Hunter valley, just a two-hour drive north of Sydney, is Australia’s oldest wine region. Most vineyards(葡萄园) are family-owned, focusing on small production. Wine is more personal here.
Stay in style
The classic Langham Hotel is located just west of Circular Quay, offering easy access to the famous port.
As you explore its beautiful corridors ( 走廊), look for contemporary artworks from around the
world—The Langham Hotel has the largest art gathering (more than $1 million worth) in Australia. Meanwhile, those looking for a more relaxed experience can go camping on Cockatoo
Island—just a quick boat ride from Circular Quay.
Travel tips
Leaving tips at the bar or for a taxi isn’t expected, but it’s appreciated.
When riding in a taxi alone, it’s traditional to sit in the front seat.
Bring sun cream, sunglasses and hat—whatever the season.
On Sundays, families enjoy discounted fares on Sydney’s ferries and trains.
What can you do in the Blue Mountains
A. Explore the artificial caves. B. Watch the lovely kangaroos.
C. Taste locally produced wine. D. Enjoy the unique corridors.
What makes the Langham Hotel special
A. Its ideal location. B. Its first-class service.
C. Its big collection of artworks. D. Its modern architectural style.
Which of the following is strongly suggested about touring Sydney
A. Ensure sun protection. B. Offer bar tips.
C. Sit behind the driver in a taxi. D. Travel by train.
B
Marathon is one of the most difficult races in track and field, at a little over 42 kilometers. To be a world-class marathoner, you must run that distance in two and a half hours. But for some, completing a marathon race is a lifelong dream.
Jacqueline’s dream of being a world-class runner began when she was a child in Kenya. She soon realized she had the talent and the willpower to compete. She also knew she would have to train full-time, which meant not being able to work to help support her family. But she was confident that she could bring home prize money.
Jacqueline traveled to China to compete in the Zheng-Kai marathon knowing she had a good shot at winning the race, but more importantly, the $10, 000 prize that went with it. She was leading the women’s division when a male runner arrived at the water station. The man had trouble drinking water because a birth defect(缺陷)had left him without hands, and he struggled to drink from a plastic bottle. But any assistance from fans or race officials would result in his disqualification. Jacqueline noticed the man and immediately knew that he needed help. She grabbed a water bottle and helped him get the water his body needed to complete the race.
Runner after runner passed Jacqueline. Her hopes of winning were getting lost in numerous runners ahead of her. With only 4 kilometers left in the race, and certain that the male runner would now finish, Jacqueline picked up her pace and finally finished second.
That day, Jacqueline missed out on first place, but she finished something more important: humanity. She returned home with the smaller prize of second place, but to her family, she brought home something much more valuable to home: the right example.
What can we know about Jacqueline from paragraph 2
A. She was born with little sports talent. B. Her goal was to win a championship.
C. Her family opposed her going for a run. D. She had to train full-time to achieve her dream.
Why did the male runner struggle to drink from a plastic bottle
A. He was disabled. B. No assistance was allowed.
C. He had no access to the water station. D. He competed with other runners for water.
What happened after Jacqueline helped the male runner
She won second place at last.
She was criticised by her family.
She was disqualified for going against rules.
She fell behind several runners and gave up.
What is the attitude of Jacqueline’s family towards her deed
A. Cautious. B. Approving. C. Indifferent. D. Disappointed.
C
Are you the kind of person who hate school Or are you more like Michael Nicholson, who can’t stop learning He currently has 30 degrees including 22 master’s and a doctor’s degree! If you’re also crazy about studying, you might be a philomath — a person who loves to learn and study. The word comes from Greek with “phil” meaning “a lover of” and “math” meaning “learning”.
Humans are all philomaths to an extent — our brain is born to be curious. We want to learn and understand, partly to make sense of the world but also because of something called neoteny. This is a term that refers to the youthful characteristics of humans being remained into adulthood. One of these characteristics is neuroplasticity, which helps our brains stay flexible — this gives us the ability to learn throughout our lives. Many creatures which are close to us, like primates (灵长类), can’t do this and only learn during their youthhood.
But for every person who loves learning, there are plenty who can’t stand it. Lots of people remember their school days as being boring or even pointless. Why is this Educational experts have suggested that if an idea is too dull or too difficult to understand, it becomes harder to connect old and new ideas together. If that is the case, we lose interest and take in less information. This negative experience of education at school may lead to people avoiding learning opportunities in later life.
So, don’t let a negative educational experience prevent you learning something new as an adult. Take advantage of your biology and discover your inner philomath. Who knows what you could achieve
Why does the author mention “Michael Nicholson” in paragraph 1
A. To lead to a topic. B. To introduce a figure.
C. To present a rule. D. To raise a question.
What is paragraph 2 mainly about
A. Humans can be lifelong learners. B. Creatures like primates can’t learn.
C. Humans are born to know the world. D. Creatures have different learning abilities.
What may kill humans interest in later learning according to the text
A. Less learning opportunities. B. Old memories of school days.
C. Ways to connect old and new ideas. D. Bad education experiences when young.
What does the author intend to do by writing this text
To praise people who can’t stop learning.
To make it clear to people what is a philomath.
To explain why some people don’t like studying.
To encourage people to be passionate in learning.
D
Time to load up some popular games: new research indicates pigs have the mental capability
(能力)to play video games. The study tested the ability of four pigs (Hamlet, Omelette, Ebony
and Ivory) to play a simple joystick(操纵杆)game with their noses, moving a curso(r 光标)to four
targets on the screen. Although the animals didn’t demonstrate the skills to win a round any time, they did show an understanding of some elementary games. Performing well not by chance, the pigs appeared to recognize the movement of the cursor which was controlled by the joystick. The fact that they did so well despite a lack of flexible fingers is “extraordinary”, according to the researchers.
“It is no small achievement for an animal to grasp the concept that the behaviour they are performing is having an influence elsewhere. That pigs can do this to any degree should give us pause as to what else they are capable of learning and how such learning may influence them, “said the study’s lead author.
Researchers also noted that while the pigs could be taught to play the game using food as positive motivation ( 动力), they also responded well to social interaction. In fact, when the game was made more challenging and the pigs became unwilling to participate in it, “only word encouragement by the experimenter” would see training continue.
These findings are the latest to highlight the intelligence of pigs. Not only have they been shown to use mirrors to find hidden food, but studies have also demonstrated how pigs can be taught to “come” and “sit” after oral commands.
As with any sentient(有感觉力的)beings, how we interact with pigs and what we do to them
impacts and matters to them. We therefore have a moral duty to understand how pigs acquire information, and what they are capable of learning and remembering, because it ultimately offers the potential for how they understand their interactions with us and their environments.
What can be learned from Paragraph 1
The pigs sometimes won the video games.
The pigs operated joysticks with their noses.
The pigs competed with each other in the games.
The pigs sometimes performed well accidentally.
What does the underlined phrase “give us pause” refer to
A. Stop us from advancing. B. Affect us in learning.
C. Make us think seriously. D. Force us to receive training.
What made researchers believe pigs socially interacted well
Their being inspired by human words.
Their being driven by food.
Their being willing to keep trying.
Their being motivated by challenges.
Which of the following could be the best title
A. Smart pigs: best animal players B. Flexible noses: fun games
C. Oral commands: pig learners D. Pig players: learning potential

Lots of people find it hard to get up in the morning, and put the blame on the alarm clock. In fact, the key to easy morning wake-up lies in resting your body clock. 36 Here’s how to make one.
37 In order to make a change, you need to decide why it’s important. Do you want to get up in time to have breakfast with your family, get in some exercise, or just be better prepared for your day Once you are clear about your reasons, tell your family or roommates about the change you want to make.
Rethink mornings. Now that you know why you want to wake up, consider re-arranging your morning activities. If you want time to have breakfast with your family, save some time the night before by setting out clothes, shoes, and bags. 38 That’s a quarter-hour more you could be sleeping if you bought a coffee maker with a timer.
Keep your sleep/wake schedule on weekends. If you’re tired out by Friday night, sleeping in on Saturday could sound wonderful. But compensating on the weekends actually feeds into your sleepiness the following week, a recent study found. 39
Keep a record and evaluate it weekly. Keep track of your efforts and write down how you feel. After you’ve tried a new method for a week, take a look at your record. 40 If not, take another look at other methods you could try.
Get a sleep specialist.
Find the right motivation.
A better plan for sleep can help.
And consider setting a second alarm.
If the steps you take are working, keep it up.
Stick to your set bedtime and wake-up time, no matter the day.
Reconsider the 15 minutes you spend in line at the cafe to get coffee.

Eric was working in a selling business. He had been on the road visiting people for more than a month without going home. He couldn’t wait to get back to see his wife and children. It was coming up on Mother’s Day,and he usually tried to make it “back home”,but this year he was just too busy and too tired. The day when he was driving in a small town, he saw a flower shop. He said to himself,“I know what I will do. I’ll send my mother some roses.”
He stopped and went into the flower shop and saw a young man talking to the girl in it. “How many roses can I get for five dollars,Miss?” the young man asked. The girl was trying to explain that roses were expensive. Maybe the young man would be happy with something else.
“No. I have to have roses,” he said. “My mom was badly sick last year and I didn’t get to spend much time with her. I want to get something special. It has to be red roses, because that is her favorite.” He was stubborn.
The girl in the shop looked up at Eric and was just shaking her head. Something inside of Eric was touched by the boy’s voice. He wanted to get those roses so badly. Eric had been lucky in his business, and he looked at the girl and silently said that he would pay for the young man’s roses.
The girl looked at the young man and said,“OK, I will give you a dozen red roses for your dollars.” The young man almost jumped into the air. He took the flowers and ran down the store. It was worth more than fifty dollars just to see that kind of excitement.
Eric ordered his own flowers and asked the girl to have it delivered to his mother. After that, with a relief he drove down the road. Not long after his driving,he saw the young man walking to a graveyard(墓地).

Dear Frank,
It’s amazing that you’re interested in the popular Chinese Poetry TV Competition and want to
take part in it. I’m more than delighted to offer you some tips.
First of all, you should surf the Internet to learn about the brief history of Chinese poetry to get
a better understanding of it. The resources are available on many relevant websites. Additionally,
you had better recite as many poems as possible and seek help from teachers, which will enable you
to enlarge your knowledge about Chinese poetry. More importantly, watching previous events will
make you get familiar and well prepared so that you will not feel stressed or anxious during the
fiercely-competitive process.
Hope these suggestions will help you get started. Good luck in the competition.
Yours,
Li Hua

M: Good idea. I could always use a new friend.
Text 4
W: Are you worried about the test today I’ve been studying all week for it.

with my eyes closed. (4)
Text 5
W: This is where we store everything before they get sent out to one of our five branches. (5)
If you have any questions, I’ll be in my office on the third floor.

Huacachina is a remote village in the country of Peru. After flying into the capital of Lima,
you need to take a bus to Ica. If you like visiting ancient temples, you can go to Comatrana instead.
It is nearer to Huacachina than Ica. (17) Keep in mind that taxis here will charge you more money,
