Why second best is best for my kids
“All I want for him is to be happy all his life," I said softly when my son Jack was born.
I probably followed it up with“I want only the best for him”.
I want my kids to be happy more than anything, and I've realized wanting the best for
them and treating them with “only the best" policy are not pathways to happiness. They
are pathways to rude kids and parental misery(悲惨).
I've accepted the “second best” belief of parenting.Actually, I may have invented it-or
given it a name, at least. It is a belief easy to get into but I see “only the best” parents all
the time. Some of them are my good friends. The problem is that I never get to talk to
them because they're too busy going to school on open days or racing from gymnastics to
guitar lessons to get together for coffee with me.
I say, “ Why don't you send your daughter to the gymnastics centre in the town ” and my friend Jen will say, “I would, but the one at Cleveland is so much better, The head
coach was a world champion.”
It’s on the tip of my tongue to tell my friend she treats her child like royalty, but I don't.
It is none of my business ( although it is) and I worry that that will influence our friendship.
Anyhow, I’m not the one driving a 40 km round trip for a nine-year-old’s gymnastics class.
Being satisfied with second best for your kids is quite different from expecting second
best from them. It's important that they try their hardest, use their best manners, and do what
they believe is right. What I doubt is parents sacrificing(牺牲) their happiness for their
kids’ happiness and the ones who are paying for things their child doesn't need and that they can’t afford. It’s a belief that everyone else is doing something and if they don’t, their kids will be let behind.
The happiest families I know are the ones with the most relaxed parents. And mostly,
they're happy with second-best children, because that's what's best for them.
24.What is the best for children according to the author
A.To feel happy all the time.
B.To be talented in many ways.
C.To be the best in any field especially at school.
D.To make their parents happy with excellent performance.
25.Why doesn't the author talk to“only the best” parents
A.They are too busy with their jobs and housework.
B.They are too busy making their children best.
C.They look down upon the author's opinion.
D.Their children are in different schools.
26.Why doesn't the author tell Jen her real opinion
A.She worries that that will influence Jen's daughter.
B.She knows the head coach was once a world champion.
C.She doesn't want their relation to be influenced.
D.She doesn't know anything about gymnastics classes.
27.In the author’s opinion, the happiest families are those with parents who are .
A.sacrificing their happiness for their kinds’ happiness
B.paying for things for their child even if they can’t afford
C.making every effort to avoid their children being left behind
D.satisfied with their second-best children with relaxed minds

Sixteen years ago, the wildlife documentary(纪录片)Planet Earth showed us an amazing journey from deep caves to the rainforests and then to the bottom of the ocean. Then the documentary Our Planet showed different animals and the influence of humans on the natural world.
The US entertainment company Netflix made the eight-episode(集)journey meet its audience on April 5,2019. The crew(工作人员)of the documentary covers 50 countries and areas to choose the best filming places, and it takes more than four years to produce it.It is the hard work of more than 600 crew members.
With the 4K video technology, the documentary allows audiences to have a sharp new look at nature. “People are given a chance to better get themselves into the lives of the animals,”said Fothergill, one of the documentary’s producers.
Apart from showing Earth’s beauty in new detail, the documentary also shows the planet’s poor climate conditions.“Our planet is here to say,‘The planet is dying and you’re killing it.’”Fothergill said. In one sad scene, hundreds of walruses(海象), half-blind when out of the water, fall down a rock to suffer a painful death on the beach below. It shows how man-made global warming has destroyed their natural habitat and explains why they’ve been forced to find a safe place on the rocks.
However, it’s not all about sadness. The documentary also talks about success stories, including Siberian tigers, blue whales and humpback whales. These species are protected thanks to international agreements on environmental protection. It reminds us that we can change the present bad condition of our planet through our joint effort.
Calling on more people to take action to protect our planet is the final goal of the documentary. What we do in the next 20 years will decide the future of all life on Earth.

When you visit Kinderdijk, one of the most visited villages in the Netherlands, you step right into the middle of Dutch history.
Kinderdijk lies in the Alblasserwaard, where the Lek and Noord rivers meet together. Much of the village is near or even below sea level. Although there are canals and dykes(坝),the lowlands of the village are still at risk of flooding. Among the most deadly floods was Saint Elisabeth’s flood in 1421, which killed thousands after the dykes broke in several places. To deal with this kind of problem, the Kinderdijk windmills(风车)were built around 1740 to move water from the lower areas to higher ground and into the canal.
Nineteen of the 20 Kinderdijk windmills remain and were named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997. Of the 19 windmills, 16 still have millers who live inside and control the huge sails in the wind. These windmills continue to help manage the Netherlands ongoing fight to stay above water.
For tourists, boat tours are offered along the canals and walkways lead from the visitor center to the windmills. Two windmills serve as museums, filled with old millers’ items and photos. You can climb up inside to see how the windmills work. The windmills are also working, so be prepared to feel the whole building shake when the sails turn in the wind.
Each year, about 500,000 people visit the Kinderdijk windmills and the buildings have become a must-see on any trip to the Netherlands.“There are some windmills north of Amsterdam that were built for tourists, but we’re a historical site where tourists come, so it’s the other way around,”says Kinderdijk communications manager Peter Paul Klapwijk. “Tourism is a good way to support our site.”
32.Why were the Kinderdijk windmills built around 1740
A.To protect dykes. B.To produce clean water.
C.To prevent floods. D.To keep the sea level from rising.

A.Most of them are working as before.
B.Most of them have become museums.
C.Several of them have been sold to millers.
D.Several of them were destroyed long ago.
34.How does Peter Paul Klapwijk feel about so many tourists visiting the windmills
A.Fearful. B.Worried. C.Excited. D.Surprised.
35.What does the text mainly introduce

C.An amazing village of canals. D.The traditions of the Netherlands.

She stood beside a stand for a while, watching the middle-aged seller busy doing his business. However, with no money in hand, she sighed and had to leave.
The seller behind the stand noticed the young girl and asked,“Hey, girl, you want to have the noodles ”
“Oh, yes…but I don’t have money on me,”she replied.
“That’s nothing. I’ll treat you today,”said the man.“Come in.”
The seller brought her a bowl of noodles, whose smell was so attractive. As she was eating, Jenny cried silently.
“What is it ”asked the man kindly.
“Nothing, actually I was just touched by your kindness!”said Jenny.“Even a stranger on the street will give me a bowl of noodles, while my mother drove me out of the house. She showed no care for me. She is so merciless compared to a stranger!”
Hearing the words, the seller smiled,“Girl, do you really think so ”I only gave you a bowl of noodles and you thanked me a lot. But it is your mother who has raised you since you were a baby. Can you number the times she cooked for you Have you expressed your gratitude to her ”
Jenny sat there, speechless and numb with shock; she remembered her mother’s familiar face and weathered hands.“Why didn’t I think of that A bowl of noodles from a stranger made me feel grateful, but I have never thanked my mum for what she has done for me.”

第一节
Dear John,
I’m sorry to hear that you are lonely in this new school. Now I’d like to offer you some suggestions.
It’s normal for you to feel lonely because you are living in an entirely new environment. To adapt yourself to the unfamiliar surroundings, you’d better take an active part in class and after-school activities. What’s more, don’t be afraid to show people what you are really good at. It’s easier to make friends when you have similar interests with others.
To be frank, I’d like to be your friend and I hope everything will be fine with you in the future.
Yours,
LiHua
第二节
Paragraph 1:
Approaching the doorway, Jenny took a deep breath. When she pushed the door open and entered the house, she found her mother was not in it. Tired and sad, she sank down noto the sofa.“Where could my mother be ”she wondered.“Was she still angry with me ”Again, the scene of the quarrel appeared in her mind. She remembered her rudeness to her mother. Realizing that all the scolding from her mother was due to the fact that her mother really cared a lot about her, she felt rather ashamed, and tears began to roll down her cheeks.
Paragraph 2:
A gentle touch on her hair called her mind back. She raised her head to see the familiar face and the worried eyes.“Here you come!I’ve been looking for you,”came the tired voice. Jenny couldn’t help but throw herself into her mother’s arms.“I’m sorry and thank you for all you have done for me.” She expressed the sincere apology and the great gratitude. Then she felt the hug tightened.
