第二部分 阅读理解(共两节,满分40分)
第一节(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C和D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。
A
July 21st,2007 was a typical English summer’s day — it rained for 24 hours! As usual,I rushed home from work at midday to check on the house.Nothing was amiss.By the time I left work at 5 p.m.,however,the road into our village was flooded. Our house had never been flooded but,as I opened the front door,a wave of water greeted me.Luckily, the kids weren’t with me,because the house was 5 feet deep in water. We lost everything downstairs.
At first we tried to push on through. We didn’t want to move the children out of home,so we camped upstairs. We put a sheet of plastic across the floor to protect us from the damp(潮湿).But after three months,we felt very sick,so we moved to a wooden house in a park. The house was small, but at first we were all just pleased to be in a new place.Unfortunately, things took longer than expected and we were there for 10 months. The life there was inconvenient. What surprised me most was how much I missed being part of a community(社区).We had lived in a friendly village with good neighbours, and I’d never thought how much I’d miss that.
Although our situation was very bad,it’s difficult to feel too sorry for yourself when you look at what’s happening elsewhere.I watched a news report about floods in Northern India and thought,“We didn’t have a straw hut(茅草房)that was swept away, and our house is still standing. We’re lucky.”
We moved back home in August. With December coming, there’s still reconstruction(重建)work to be done,so it’s difficult to prepare for Christmas. But I can’t wait — I’m going to hold a party for our friends in the village to say thanks for their support. This year,I won’t need any gifts — living away from home for months has made me realize how little we actually need or miss all our possessions(财产).Although we are replacing things, there’s really no rush — we have our home back, and that’s the main thing.
21.It can be inferred from the passage that the author .
A.was sick of staying upstairs
B.cared much about her children
C.could not stand living in a wooden house
D.did not deal well with her family affairs during the flood
22.Why does the author say that they were lucky in the third paragraph
A.Because her situation was not serious.
B.Because many other places were flooded.
C.Because she had been to Northern India.
D.Because some others suffered even more.
23.What does the author mainly want to express by telling her story
A.She valued human feelings more than before.
B.She realized she almost didn’t need possessions.
C.She found Christmas gifts no longer badly needed.
D.She thought her own home was the most important.
B
The other day,my friend Jane was invited to a 40th birthday party. The time printed on the invitation was 7:30 p.m.Jane went off with her husband David, expecting a merry evening of wine, food, and songs.
By 9:45,everybody was having great fun,but no food had appeared.Jane and David were restless.Other guests began whispering that they, too, were hungry. But no one wanted to leave, just in case some food was about to appear.By 11:00,there was still no food, and everyone was completely off their heads.Jane and David left hungry and angry.
Their experience suggests that the words on the printed invitations need to be made clearer.Everyone reads and understands the invitations differently. Most of us would agree that 6:30-8:30 p.m. means drinks only, that after 8:00 p.m. or 8:30 p.m. means possible dinner, and that 9:30 p.m. and any time thereafter means no food — eat beforehand and roll up late.
But this is not always the case.If asked to a students’ party at 6:30 p.m.,it is normal for guests not to appear before midnight,if at all,and no one cares.Being the first to arrive — looking eager — is social death. When my mother is asked to a party at 6:30,she likes to be there,if not on time, then no later than seven. My age group (late thirties) falls somewhere between the two,but because we still think we’re young,we’re probably closer to student time than grown-up time.
The accepted custom at present is confusing, sometimes annoying, and it often means you may go home hungry, but it does lend every party that precious element(要素) of surprise.
24.The underlined words “off their heads” probably mean “ ”.
A.tired B.crazy
C.curious D.hot
25.Jane and David’s story is used to show that .
A.party invitations can be confusing
B.party-goers usually get hungry at parties
C.people should ask for food at parties
D.birthday parties for middle-aged people are dull
26.For some young people, arriving on time for a students’ party will probably be considered .
A.very difficult
B.particularly thoughtful
C.friendly and polite
D.socially unacceptable
27.What is the main idea of the passage
A.It’s safe to arrive late just when food is served.
B.It’s wise to eat something before going to a party.
C.It’s important to follow social rules of party-going.
D.It’s necessary to read invitations carefully.
C
Teens and younger children are reading a lot less for fun, according to a Common Sense Media report published Monday.
While the decline over the past decade is steep for teen readers, some data in the report shows that reading remains a big part of many children’s lives, and indicates how parents might help encourage more reading.
According to the report’s key findings,“the proportion(比例) who say they ‘hardly ever’ read for fun has gone from 8 percent of 13-year-olds and 9 percent of 17-year-olds in 1984 to 22 percent and 27 percent respectively today.”
The report data shows that pleasure reading levels for younger children, ages 2-8,remain largely the same. But the amount of time spent in reading each session has declined, from closer to an hour or more to closer to a half hour per session.
When it comes to technology and reading, the report does little to counsel(建议) parents looking for data about the effect of e-readers and tablets on reading. It does point out that many parents still limit electronic reading, mainly due to concerns about increased screen time.
The most hopeful data shared in the report shows clear evidence of parents serving as examples and important guides for their kids when it comes to reading.Data shows that kids and teens who do read frequently, compared to infrequent readers, have more books in the home, more books purchased for them, parents who read more often, and parents who set aside time for them to read.
As the end of school approaches, and school vacation reading lists loom(逼近) ahead, parents might take this chance to step in and make their own summer reading list and plan a family trip to the library or bookstore.
28.What is the Common Sense Media report probably about
A.Children’s reading habits.
B.Quality of children’s books.
C.Children’s after-class activities.
D.Parent-child relationships.
29.Where can you find the data that best supports “children are reading a lot less for fun”
A.In Paragraph 2. B.In Paragraph 3.

A.E-books are of poor quality.
B.It could be a waste of time.
C.It may harm children’s health.
D.E-readers are expensive.
31.How should parents encourage their children to read more
A.Act as role models for them.
B.Ask them to write book reports.
C.Set up reading groups for them.
D.Talk with their reading class teachers.

People were born in all shapes and sizes, colors and races. Some speak differently while others act differently.
My mother is in a wheelchair.I would like to say something about this special woman I call “Mommy”.
My mom does what a mom needs to do every day.She picks me up from school, drives me to meetings, cooks dinner, and helps me with my homework. This is just part of what makes her great, though.
She is my best friend and can immediately notice when I am unhappy. She helps me solve problems that my friends do not understand.Mommy makes me laugh when times are tough.I look forward to coming home because I know there is someone there who cares about what I have done.
Mommy has always tried to be like a “normal” mom.But I think my mother is a wonderful woman and she doesn’t need to change. She teaches me life lessons that no teachers or friends can.She shows me how to accept everyone for what is inside, rather than what is on the outside.
You may have realized that all the qualities I admire have nothing to do with what she looks like.Everyone could be the way she is,but most are not.
I want everyone to look beyond the surface and see what is inside others. You may fail to notice someone who is very special like my mom because you cannot accept their outside features.
32.What’s the function(作用) of Paragraph 1
A.To tell us that people were born to be different.

Dear Jack,
Thanks for your email.I’m glad to tell you something about China’s Spring Festival.
As you know, the Spring Festival is the most important festival in China, just like Christmas in your country. It falls on the last day of the lunar year and lasts until the Lantern Festival.
Before the festival comes, people clean and decorate their houses to welcome the New Year.On New Year’s Eve,people usually get together to watch annual Spring Festival Gala on TV while eating delicious food.During the festival, people go from house to house to pay a New Year visit to their relatives and friends.
As a teenager,I like the Spring Festival very much because I can set off fireworks and get pocket money from my parents and relatives.
How do you like the Spring Festival I look forward to hearing from you.
Yours,
Li Hua
