In later life, Charlie Chaplin holidayed with his family in Nairn. Writer Stuart Price believes Nairn and its setting offered Chaplin greater relief than other places. The musical written by Price, TheCharlieChaplinStory, is touring UK theatres. The production will be at Eden Court Theatre in Inverness, just 16 miles from Nairn. Charlie Chaplin, who is best known as a silent movie actor and director, took his family on holidays to Nairn and stayed in the town's Newton Hotel.
Price and the musical's composer (作曲家), Jake Field, visited the Highland town during their Chaplin story re search work. “Jake and I wrote sections of this musical in France and Switzerland, visiting Lausanne and Nice on writing breaks. The peace Charlie clearly found in Switzerland and Scotland helped me to form a sense of relief for him to be away from the pressure, so it was inspiring without doubt.”
Arnold, who plays Chaplin's brother Sydney and Harry Weldon, a music hall comedian who worked with Chaplin, said: “Charlie and Sydney had a really hard childhood. Sydney was the one person who could get away with talking to Charlie the way he did — telling him the truth. They had a great respect for each other. Weldon, another role I played, and Chaplin did not see eye to eye at all. I think Weldon was very jealous (嫉妒的) of Chaplin and the two of them would fight. Being an artist is often like being chained to a madman. But it also takes you on incredible journeys into other people's lives and getting to know about Chaplin has changed me forever.”
21.Where will be the musical TheCharlieChaplinStory put on
A.In the Highland town. B.In the Nairn town.
C.In Inverness. D.In Newton Hotel.

D.He often got great pressure from Charlie Chaplin.
23.We can infer from the text that Arnold is ________.
A.also a gifted and mad actor B.very fond of taking journeys
C.quite familiar to Charlie Chaplin D.greatly influenced by Charlie Chaplin

A school in Sarajevo is making headlines for not only accepting a deaf student, but also teaching his entire class sign language to allow them to better communicate with him.
The heartwarming story began in September last year when Mirzana Coralic requested the primary school in her neighborhood to enroll her six year old son, Zejd, who has a hearing disability. The teacher, Sanela Ljumanovic, accepted almost immediately, but on the first day of school, she noticed Zejd sitting all by himself, unable to communicate with any of his school mates.
Sanela, determined to find a solution, tried developing a few tricks and signs of her own. But a parent of another child came up with an even better idea — getting the whole class to learn sign language along with Zejd. So they got sign language teacher Anisa Setkic Sendic on board, and three months later, Zejd was happily able to communicate to all his classmates about regular things like homework and games.
Now, sign language is getting quite popular at Osman Nakas primary school, with kids from other classes trying to learn as well.
Although Bosnia has laws in place that allow children with disabilities to attend all schools, full integration (融入) has been rather difficult in practice. There aren't many teachers like Anisa, mainly because the Ministry of Education does not pay for sign language classes. However, the parents of the children in Zejd's class offered to contribute money to pay for the lessons. Of course, not all parents can afford to, but Sanela maintains confidentially about which parents pay and how much.
“We are finding ways,” Anisa said. “The children are growing, we can't wait for better times to come.” Mean while, Sanela thinks the next goal is to teach Zejd to read lips. “He is a good kid, a smart kid,” she said.
24.Why did Zejd sit alone on the first day of school
A.He was in low spirits. B.He hated to talk with strangers.
C.His classmates looked down upon him. D.He had trouble communicating with others.
25.Who thought of getting the whole class to learn sign language
A.Mirzana Coralic. B.Sanela Ljumanovic.
C.Zejd. D.A parent of a child.
26.Why do disabled children have difficulty in attending schools
A.Schools can't take in so many children.
B.Teachers are unwilling to teach them.
C.Parents are against the full integration.
D.Schools don't get enough money from the government.
27.What will Sanela plan to do
A.Help Zejd buy a hearing aid. B.Seek for people willing to raise Zejd.
C.Make Zejd learn how to read lips. D.Inspire Zejd to speak.

Should you recycle the boxes from your takeaway pizza or throw it away Can you recycle cans Is all plastic recyclable
We probably all know that recycling is good for the environment. It saves energy and limits waste on Earth's resources. But do you know which items you should or shouldn't recycle
In the UK, there is a good system of roadside recycling. Most people expect to separate recyclable material from general refuse. A typical household recycles paper, cardboard, plastic and glass bottles and cans. Food and garden waste is now also collected. But in the last four years, the number of items rejected for recycling in England has gone up by 84%, mainly as a result of pollution. If your plastic milk bottle is empty, it's OK to recycle it, but if it contains a small amount of milk, it could result in pollution of the plastic recycling process.
Many items end up in landfills (垃圾填埋场) or being burned when, with more care, they could be recycled. The problem often results from confusion over what, when and how to recycle.
Across the UK the system of recycling differs between local governments, and different containers are used for different types of recyclables. In one area there may be some large bins for recycling all household items. A few streets away, another district may use different ones. Additionally, waste collection times vary — either daily or weekly. Each time, you have to remember which bin has to go out. It's all highly complex.
Responsible consumers are always faced with recycling puzzles. You've just finished a box of juice. Should you remove the plastic cap before recycling the box You feel the future of the planet lies in your hands. My advice: stop worrying and open a bottle of beer!... Hang on... what should you do with the bottle top
28.What does the underlined word “refuse” in Paragraph 3 probably mean
A.Goods. B.Waste. C.Resources. D.Food.
29.What will happen to items that have been rejected for recycling
A.They will be buried or burned. B.They will be sorted out.
C.They will be put into rivers. D.They will be delivered to other countries.
30.How does the author feel about recycling
A.Satisfied. B.Annoyed. C.Doubtful. D.Confused.
31.What can be the best title for the text
A.Various Ways of Recycling B.The Significance of Recycling
C.Recycling in the UK D.The Puzzles of Recycling in the UK

Next time you raise an eyebrow at the views of your partner, friend, brother, sister or colleague, remember they could be helping to make you smarter. New research shows that intelligence is not fixed but can be improved throughout adulthood by family members, bright mates and intellectually challenging careers. The study challenges the commonly held belief that intelligence is fixed by the age of about 18.
Scientific consensus (共识) suggests intelligence is controlled by genes, with environmental factors such as schooling and nutrition playing a part up to this age. After this point, IQ scores become steady. But James Flynn, professor at the University of Otago in New Zealand, argues that people can “upgrade” their intelligence throughout their lives. He believes intellectual stimulation (刺激) from other people is important as the “brain seems to be rather like a muscle — the more you use it, the stronger it gets”. However, the opposite is also true — so people who share a home or workplace with the intellectually challenged risk seeing their IQ levels nosedive as a result.
Professor Flynn analysed US intelligence tests from the last 65 years and created new IQ “age tables”. He found a bright ten year old with brothers and sisters of average intelligence will suffer a five to ten point IQ disadvantage compared to a similar child with equally bright brothers and sisters. However, children with a low IQ could gain six to eight points by having brighter brothers and sisters and special educational treatment to help pull them up.
Professor Flynn concluded that although genetics and early life experiences determine about 80% of intelligence, the remaining 20% is linked to lifestyle. This means people can raise their IQ, or allow it to fall, by ten points or more. He suggests the best way to improve IQ levels is to socialise with bright friends, and find an intellectually challenging job.
32.What can be learnt from the text
A.People's IQ levels fall as they age.
B.It is wise to share family members' views.
C.People can't improve their intelligence during adulthood.
D.Doing something challenging is good for one's intelligence.
33.What does the underlined word “nosedive” in Paragraph 2 most probably mean
A.Vary. B.Develop. C.Change. D.Fall.
34.Which of the following can help improve one's intelligence according to Professor Flynn
A.Making many friends. B.Staying with smart people.
C.Doing exercise every day. D.Learning from brothers or sisters.
35.What's the purpose of the text
A.To inform. B.To advertise. C.To entertain. D.To persuade.

阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
All I feel is the sensation of blood pumping under my skin, delivering the much needed oxygen to my burning muscles. All I hear is my heart, as if it were located at my temples and not in my chest, where my lungs are working furiously, sucking air in and pushing it out in great, loud gusts. My feet hit hard against the rough ground beneath me, propelling me forward. My eyes are open but I do not take in the scenery around me. There are just colors whizzing by, greens blend with browns, fall colors, yellow, orange, and scarlet red.
I am flying. These sensations are not possible any other way. I have to fly. I have to fly to feel this. I look back over my shoulder, my hair which had long ago fallen out of its messy bun whips against my flushed cheeks. I see no person behind me. I beg myself not to slow down because of this. There is a corner up ahead and I round it with speed comparable to a car being driven by a reckless yet skilled teenager.
Just as I suspect there is someone in front of me. I breathe in deeply and pump my legs faster. It's been a while since we all first bolt off from the starting line and I know the finish cannot be far. I can't give up now. And the nameless girl in front of me is the only one in my way.
The sound of cheering comes to my attention, Suddenly, I am no longer on a path in the woods. It is the nameless girl and me in a field. I see the finish line. Everyone lines up cheering us on.
“Come on, girls!”“You can do it!”“You're almost there!”
Yes, I have almost done it.
The voices of the crowd help me to gather up the rest of my strength and burst forward. My lungs are pumping so hard and my blood is flowing so fast that I don't even feel my body any more. It is as though I have exploded. And nothing even matters any more except for passing this girl and beating her. For then I will have won.

For eighty four days, an old Cuban fisherman named Santiago has had no luck. For eighty four days, he has prepared his bait, lines and boat and headed out to the big blue ocean, only to return tired and empty handed. Everything about him is old except his eyes, cheerful and undefeated, they are the same color as the sea.
While Santiago is preparing for his eighty fifth try, a young boy named Manolin brings him some food and helps him prepare his tools. Manolin used to fish with Santiago, but has been forced by his parents to fish instead with a luckier boat. His parents, like everyone else, think it's only a waste of time to go fishing with the old man. However, the boy believes in Santiago, who taught him how to fish with all his rich knowledge about the sea. For Manolin, Santiago is like a father and teacher. The boy loves and respects the old man, and tells Santiago that he is the best fisherman.

参考范文:
During this summer holiday, I made a wonderful trip to Hangzhou.
I spent three days there. On the first day, I went to the famous Su Dongpo Memorial Hall, where I enjoyed the charm of ancient Chinese culture. The next day, I went to the West Lake. It greatly impressed me with its beautiful scenery. On the last day, I visited the Qiandao Lake, where I took many beautiful photos.
This trip is of great benefit to me. For one thing, it broadens my horizons. For another, it makes me know more about the outside world.

Ihaveworkedsohardforthis, weeksandweeksoftrainingandsupportfrommyteamandfamily. I am not about to let them down now. I ran close to the girl in front of me. The finish line was so close, as if we could pass it in a step. But the girl faltered and fell down on the field unexpectedly, which caused the crowd to be surprised. “Oh, my God.” I stopped, a little hesitantly, but I helped her get up. Then several runners rushed to the finish line.

Then my team surrounded me, telling me what a good job I did and soon my parents came alone. My mother gave me a hug and my eyes were wet. So what does it really matter what place I came in It doesn't.
