Michele Gentile, an Italian bookseller, is offering free books to children in exchange for plastic bottles to recycle. Gentile owns Ex Libris Cafe in Polla, a small town in southern Italy. He said he thought of the recycling program, because he wanted to inspire children in the small town to read and pay attention to the environment.
“My goal is to spread the passion and love for books among those people in Italy who do not usually read while at the time helping the environment,” Gentile explained.
The idea for the initiative came after Gentile cooperated with a nearby middle school on an aluminum recycling project. Working together, the schoolchildren and Gentile collected enough cans to buy books for an entire class. His new program took off from there and has already spread into northern Italy. Gentile hopes his work will continue to make headlines and become a worldwide initiative.
The free books come from customers in Gentile's shop who have donated money to buy a “suspended” book. The idea comes from a World War Ⅱ practice in which customers would buy two coffees: one for themselves and the other for the next person in line. Gentile has been using the extra books as part of his recycling initiative. While Gentile's program is a great way to recycle waste and get kids to read, it also brings attention to the growing problem of plastic waste. Single-use plastics make up around 26 percent of all the plastics in the world, only 14 percent of which are recycled. Plastics that end up in landfills take around 500 years to decompose (腐烂), which is a major concern for environmentalists.
Cutting down on plastic waste is important if we want to better the environment for future generations, and recycling programs like Gentile's book giveaway are a great way to meet that goal.
24.What is the purpose of Gentile's book program
A.To sell more books. B.To attract more customers.
C.To collect money for a new project. D.To inspire reading and recycling.
25.How did Gentile come up with the idea
A.Working with a school to recycle cans. B.Seeing school kids don't like reading.
C.Donating books to a local school. D.Buying a “suspended” book for a child.
26.Who pay for the books in the project
A.The government. B.Gentile himself.
C.Some publishers. D.His customers.
27.What's the best title for the text
A.An Italian's Reading Initiative B.Recycling Cans Gets Kids Free Books
C.Gentile's Way of Doing Business D.A New Way to Deal with Plastic Waste
C
If I scratch your back and you scratch mine, then we're both better off as a result — so goes the principle of reciprocity. As humans, we are familiar with the concept, whether it is by buying rounds of drinks or expelling diplomats. But do animals also help those who help them The answer may be yes. A paper by Dolivo and Taborsky shows that Norway rats will only give as good as they get.
In their laboratory, Dolivo and Taborsky first trained rats to pull a stick that provided a food item within the reach of a rat in a neighboring cage separated from them by wire mesh (铁丝网).
They then introduced a further treatment in which an experimental rat was placed in a cage with other caged rats on either side. On one side the rat pulled a stick that provided pieces of carrot to the rat in the central cage, while the other pulled a stick that produced banana pieces.
In the following trials the focal rat(the one in the central cage) had the opportunity to repay the other rats using the same stick tool to deliver food items.
Now, the rats had typically turned their noses up at the carrot and showed a strong preference for the more desirable banana. On the basis that the banana providing rat should be therefore remembered as the superior partner, the authors predicted that in the test phase (阶段) the focal rat would more readily provide help for banana-offering rats than for carrot-offering rats. This proved to be the case: the rats that had provided better help in the past received greater rewards — it seemed that they were behaving reciprocally.
Dolivo and Taborsky's experiments show that rats can recall the quality of help provided and by which rat, and adjust their behavior so as to invest more time and energy in helping those that helped them. It is apparent that we shouldn't undervalue the ability of animals to engage in reciprocity.
28.What does the underlined word “reciprocity” probably refer to
A.The act of being kind to other people. B.A cooperative exchange of favors.
C.A positive attitude to everything. D.The quality of being generous.
29.What would happen if a rat pulled the stick
A.It would find some food in its own cage. B.Other rats would be able to enter its cage.
C.Another rat in another cage would get food. D.It would be able to enter a neighboring cage.
30.Which got more benefit from the focal rat
A.The rats that preferred carrot pieces. B.The rats that preferred banana pieces.
C.The rats that had provided carrot pieces. D.The rats that had provided banana pieces.
31.Which of the following might Dolivo and Taborsky agree with
A.Some animals may return others' help. B.Norway rats have very poor memories.
C.It is hard to explain the ability of animals. D.Rats' behavior is very uncommon.
D
Antarctica remained largely untouched by humans for thousands of years, allowing an ecosystem to develop independently. However, since the 1990s, the last wild land on the planet is becoming an increasingly popular destination for adventure-seeking tourists. Now, a study newly conducted shows the visitors may be leaving behind harmful bacteria which could destroy that area's bird population.
We mainly hear about zoonoses (动物传染病) — diseases like Ebola and pig flu — that are spread from animals to humans, yet humans can also infect animals with illnesses such as the flu. Researchers, however, believed that Antarctic animals, which had no recorded reverse (反向的) cases of zoonoses, were not affected by the danger due to the extreme environment. But microbiologists Marta Cerdà-Cuéllar at the Research Center for Animal Health, was not convinced this was true.
So she and some colleagues decided to examine waste samples from Antarctic birds for evidence of human bacteria. To ensure the waste was not polluted, the scientists had to collect it from the birds themselves. This was no easy task. It took the scientists four years to collect waste samples of 666 adult birds from 24 local species. However, it was well worth the effort. The results of their study showed the presence of several types of human bacteria in the bird waste.
“The bacteria, which are a common cause for infections in humans, don't usually cause death in wild animals,” says Cerdà Cuéllar.“However, the pathogens (病原体) that arrive to highly sensitive populations could cause extinction of some populations and destroy the local ecosystem.” The researcher also fears the presence of these bacteria could foresee the arrival of other, more deadly, pathogens as the number of people visiting the area increases. While the best solution would be to prevent tourism, Cerdà-Cuéllar,who believes it is because of efforts from tourist and scientific groups that Antarctica remains largely protected, says that's impossible. “While we should do as much as possible to reduce the spread, it's hard to believe we'll stop tourism and science at these sites, and so it is hard to believe that humans won't continue to pass on pathogens.”
32.Which of the following will the new study support
A.The Antarctic becomes popular with tourists.
B.The Antarctic ecosystem is destroyed by outsiders.
C.Zoonoses are spread from animals to humans.
D.Tourists expose Antarctic birds to human bacteria.
33.Why did researchers think Antarctic animals were free from human diseases
A.The Antarctic weather is extraordinarily cold.
B.The number of tourists to the Antarctic is small.
C.There was no recorded case of reverse zoonoses.
D.An independent ecosystem was in place in Antarctica.
34.What advice might Cerdà-Cuéllar give
A.Strengthen researches into Antarctic animals.
B.Stop tourism and science in Antarctica.
C.Restrict the number of visitors to Antarctica.
D.Monitor the presence of other pathogens.
35.In which section of a magazine might the text be found
A.Health. B.Science. C.Tourism. D.Geography.

Four simple ways to stay positive
Trying to stay positive, both in good times and bad times, is a great way to improve your quality of life. Try these four methods on a daily basis.
Don't think a lot about negativity.
Of course, staying positive 24 hours a day, seven days a week is a bit difficult. Letting things get to you is normal. In fact, it's just healthy to cry or express frustrations once in a while. It's when those negative moments control your life that your emotional balance is at risk. __36__ However, don't give that sadness another second in your day.
__37__
According to psychology, what you put into your body directly affects how you feel on the outside. Fill yourself with good, healthy foods like nuts, fruit and vegetables and limit snacking. Exercise is equally of great importance. Take a few days out of your week for at least half an hour of activity, and try to stick to a routine. __38__
Be kind to others.
__39__ Making someone's day a bit brighter not only puts a smile on his or her face, but also yours as well. Remember to smile and treat each person with respect. Good deeds are contagious (有感染力的), and your positive attitude may spread among others.
Take it one day at a time.
Being positive and keeping away from feeling pessimistic isn't an easy thing. It's a steady effort that we follow every hour of every day. __40__ Instead, focus on living in the moment and doing what you can to make each moment better.
A.Eat healthily and stay fit.
B.Take your lunch breaks outside.
C.Don't worry about what the future may bring.

Last Christmas my older sister Jane got a unicycle (独轮脚踏车) she had requested. I thought it kind of strange, wondering why she would want something like that. She did ride and practice for a while, but eventually stopped.
Curious, I tried it, finding it very hard and thinking it impossible for a weak girl like me to learn. Since our dining room of our old house had low beams (屋梁), I used them like monkey bars to practice riding, which helped a lot. Because I thought it was really fun, I practiced every spare moment I had, teaching myself to go forwards, backwards and to turn. Practicing was something I loved to do in my spare time, but it did get discouraging when I fell. After months of practicing. I finally made it.
One morning, our teacher Maria excitedly announced that a school talent show was to be held to raise money for charity. She encouraged my classmates to sign up for it. I'm not always the best in front of a crowd, which was why I was very nervous when I meant to put on my performance by doing a hula hoop (圈) and riding a unicycle on stage. But I overcame my fear and entered myself for the talent show, for which I practiced a lot in case I should mess up.
My routine (整套动作) was to do the hula hoop from my neck, down to my stomach, then to my knees. After that, I was to ride my unicycle forwards and backwards on stage. Lastly I would do the hula hoop while riding the unicycle. I was to do all this accompanied by my carefully selected music. I wondered what people from my seventh grade would think of my performance. With my friends inspiring me, I built up my confidence. On the night of the show, many people found out there was going to be a unicycle performance, so more came, even the headmaster.

Text 10
London's Chinese community dates back to the 18th century, when a small number of Chinese sailors moved to the city to work in the dock area of Limehouse, east London. As time went on, Chinese people came to this area, mainly to open shops and cafes, and Limehouse began to known as “Chinatown”. However, London's Chinese community remained very small for many years. At the start of the 20th century, there were just 545 Chinese people in Britain.
This situation changed after World War Ⅱ.At that time, many farmers in Hong Kong lost their jobs, and decided to immigrate to London. As Limehouse had been destroyed during the war, these new immigrants lived in a different area — a part of central London near Leicester Square. This area is now what Londoners call Chinatown.
At first, the new settlers found it difficult to get jobs. In the 1950s, however, a small Chinese restaurant opened in central London. Many British people visited it and praised that Chinese food was wonderful! Suddenly, Chinese restaurants started opening in every part of the city. This raised a question: instead of too little work, the new Chinese immigrants now found that they had too much! They worked very long hours as cooks, managers or waiters. Most of the people enjoyed their lives and the chances they were offered. Many arranged for their friends and relatives to join them from overseas, and a lot of families were reunited at this time.
As time went by, London's Chinese community became more and more successful. The sons and daughters of the restaurant workers, encouraged by their parents, studied very hard at school and university, and most went on to get highly paid jobs. As a result, a large number of Chinese families left Chinatown and moved to the more expensive places. Chinatown, however, is still as lively as ever.

Iwasbothnervousandexcitedwhenitwasmyturn. I had a deep breath and then rode my unicycle towards the stage. When I heard the music, I started to put the hula hoop in my neck. Carefully, I moved it down to my stomach. Everything seemed good. The audience applauded for me when the hula hoop was about to my knees. And then, an unlucky thing happened. I didn't ride backwards firmly so I tumbled. At that moment I felt my heart was broken. However, after a very short rest, I stood up with my red face. I tried again and finally, I made it. Seeing this, all the audience cheered and applauded happily.
