The Hot Technology Products at CES 2020
The consumer electronics show, or CES, presents new technology developments annually. Here are some latest products launched at CES 2020.
The Sero TV
Samsung introduced a TV that can be used to watch video designed for a smartphone. The Sero TV does this by turning itself from the normal TV position to an upright position that looks like the shape of a phone. The TV can connect to mobile devices to play video directly from the phone.
Smart waste can
A company called TOWNEW presented a waste can designed for the home that does a lot of the dirty work on its own. When the can is full, the user touches a button to activate the machine's smart abilities. The device then completely closes off the waste bag inside, puts a new one in place, all by itself, and raises its top so the user can pick up and throw away the bag.
Invisible car hood (引擎盖)
Automobile industry company Continental showed off a new technology that seems to make the front end of a vehicle disappear. The technology, called “Transparent Hood,” aims to make driving safer and easier. Cameras provide video of the area underneath the vehicle, permitting the driver to see objects and road conditions that might present danger.
Wearable air purifier
A company called Aō Air introduced a wearable air purifier. Born in Ayrshire, in 1759 to William Burness, a poor farmer, Robert Burns was the eldest of seven children. He spent his youth working on his father's farm, but in spite of his poverty he also read a lot — at the insistence of his father, who employed a teacher for Robert and his younger brother Gilbert. At 15 Robert was the principal worker on the farm and this inspired him to start writing. It was at this age that Robert penned his first verse MyHandsomeNell.
When his father died in 1784, Robert and his brother became partners on the farm. However, Robert was more interested in the romantic nature of poetry than the hard work of farming.
However, at the point of giving up farming, his first collection Poems, ChieflyintheScottishDialect was published and received much praise from critics. This, together with pride of being a parent, made him stay in Scotland. He moved around the country, eventually arriving in Edinburgh, where he joined the circles of the artists and writers who were called the “Ploughman Poet”.
In a matter of weeks he was transformed from a local hero to a national celebrity (名人). The fame did not bring a fortune and he took up a job to make additions to the low income. While collecting taxes he continued to write, contributing songs to the likes of James Johnston's ScotsMusicalMuseum and George Thomson's ASelectCollectionofOriginalScottishAirsfortheVoice. In all, more than 400 of Robert's songs are still in existence.
The last years of Robert's life were devoted to penning great poetic masterpieces such as TheLeaRig, Tamo'ShanterandARed, RedRose. He died aged 37 of heart disease caused by the hard physical work he did when he was young.
On the day of his burial more than 10,000 people came to watch and pay their respect. However, his popularity then was nothing compared to the heights it has reached since. On the anniversary (周年纪念) of his birth, Scots both at home and abroad celebrate Robert Burns with a supper — a celebration which would undoubtedly make him proud.
24.What can we know about the childhood of Robert Burns
A.He was born to a wealthy family. B.He was lucky to receive education.
C.He worked in a factory at an early age. D.He was taught by his parents and brothers.
25.What was people's reaction to his first collection
A.Doubtful. B.Favourable. C.Critical. D.Uncaring.
26.What did Robert Burns do after becoming famous
A.He went on writing while working. B.He helped other writers create poems.
C.He moved abroad and lived a hard life. D.He became the richest writer in Scotland.
27.What does the text mainly talk about
A.The history of Scottish poetry. B.The introduction of Scottish culture.
C.The life story of a Scottish poet. D.The development of English arts.

From Mozart to Metallica, tons of people enjoy listening to various types of music while they paint or write. Many believe that music helps boost creativity, but an international study conducted by British and Swedish researchers is challenging that belief. Their findings indicate that music actually stymies creativity.
To come to their conclusions, researchers had participants complete verbal insight problems designed to inspire creativity while sitting in a quiet room, and then again while music played in the background. They found that background music “significantly damaged” the participants' ability to complete tasks associated with verbal creativity. The research team also tested background noises such as those commonly heard in a library, but found that such noises had no impact on subjects' creativity. The tasks were simple word games. For example, participants were given three words, such as dress, dial, and flower. Then, they were asked to find a single word associated with all three that could be combined to form a common phrase or word. The single word, in this case, would be “sun”(sundress, sunflower, etc). Participants completed the tasks in either a quiet room, or a room with three different types of music: music with unfamiliar lyrics, instrumental music, or music with familiar lyrics.
“We found strong evidence of damaged performance when playing background music in comparison to quiet background conditions,” says co-author Dr. Neil McLatchie of Lancaster University.
Dr. McLatchie and his colleagues theorize that music interferes with the verbal working memory processes of the brain, blocking creativity. Also, as far as the library background noises having seemingly no effect, the study's authors believe that was the case because library noises create a “steady state” environment that doesn't disrupt concentration. It's worth mentioning that even familiar music with well known lyrics damaged participants' creativity, regardless of whether or not it caused a positive reaction, or whether participants typically studied or created while listening to music.
“To conclude, the findings here challenge the popular view that music strengthens creativity, and instead demonstrate that music, regardless of the presence of the semantic (语义的) content(no lyrics, familiar lyrics or unfamiliar lyrics), consistently disrupts creative performance in insight problem solving,” the study reads.
28.Why are Mozart and Metallica mentioned at the beginning
A.To prove they are very creative. B.To introduce the topic of the text.
C.To show the importance of music. D.To offer some background information.
29.What does the underlined word “stymies” in the first paragraph probably mean
A.Blocks. B.Boosts. C.Inspires. D.Strengthens.
30.If the participants were given the words fire, place and book during the game , a proper answer could be ________.
A.man B.store C.work D.birth
31.What do we know about the study
A.The tasks were very difficult for participants to finish.
B.All participants were exposed to two different types of music.
C.Music with famous lyrics didn't harm participants' creativity.
D.Library background noises hardly affected participants' creativity.

Mars (火星) appears to be flowing with small streams of salty water, at least in the summer, scientists reported Monday. “It suggests that it would be possible for there to be life today on Mars,” NASA's science mission chief, John Grunsfeld, said at a news conference on September 28, 2015.
“The streams are about 12 to 15 feet wide and 300 feet or more long,” scientists said. “What we're doing with is wet soil, thin layers of wet soil, not standing water,” said Aifred McEwen of the University of Arizona at Tueson, the principal scientist for the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter's high-resolution imaging experiment.
Because liquid water is essential to life, the findings could have major implications for the possibility of Martian life. The researchers said further exploration is needed to determine whether microscopic life exists on the planet.
The presence of liquid water could also make life easier for astronauts visiting or living on Mars. Water could be used for drinking and for creating oxygen and rocket fuel. NASA's goal is to send humans there in the 2030s.
The evidence of flowing water consists largely of dark, narrow streaks (条痕) on the surface that tend to appear and grow during the warmest Martian months and fade the rest of the year.
Mars is extremely cold even in summer, and the streaks are in places where the temperature is as low as minus 10 degrees Fahrenheit. But salt can lower the freezing point of water and melt ice.
The source of the water is a mystery. Scientists noted it could be melting ice. It could be an underground aquifer, which is rock or sand that can hold water. It is possibly water vapor from the thin Martian atmosphere. Or it may be a combination Michael Meyer, lead scientist for NASA's Mars exploration program, said the only definitive way for now to determine whether there's life on Mars is to collect rocks and soil for analysis on Earth — something a U.S. lander set for lift-off in 2020 will do.
32.What seems to be on Mars according to John Grunsfeld
A.Salty water. B.Standing water. C.Rocket fuel. D.Human beings.
33.Which of the following scientists are uncertain about the water on Mars is
A.State. B.Source. C.Temperature. D.Taste.
34.What matters to the existence of liquid water on Mars
A.The distance from the sun. B.The favorable climate.
C.The gravity of the earth. D.The salt in it.
35.What would be the best title for the text
A.Streams of Water Spotted on Mars B.Astronauts will Land on Mars
C.NASA's Mars Exploration Program D.A Breakthrough in the Exploration of Mars

Justin and his younger sister, Lily, lived with their parents in a poor neighborhood. Their mother was very sick and their father was struggling to find a job, and they had only a little money to buy food. As they had not paid the rent for several months, the landlord was breathing down their necks.
One day, Justin took Lily's shoes to a shoe repairman to have them fixed, but he lost them on the way home. It wasn't until he got home that he realized he had lost the shoes. He was afraid that his parents would be angry and disappointed, so he begged his sister to keep it secret. Lily agreed and the two decided to share Justin's running shoes. Lily's school hours were in the morning, so she would wear them first. After school, she would rush back and give them to Justin. He could then run to his school, which began in the afternoon. Although he ran as fast as he could, Justin often arrived late and was warned by the school.
A long distance race was going to be held for the boys in the city. When Justin learned that the third prize was a new pair of shoes, he decided to take part. He ran home excitedly and promised his sister that he would win her the new shoes.
The day of the race arrived. Justin had a strong start, but halfway through the race he began to get tired and his legs began to ache. Getting more and more exhausted, he thought only of Lily and his promise to her. Dreaming of the new shoes he would win for his sister gave him strength, and he stayed right behind the two fastest runners, determined to finish third. Suddenly, as the finish line drew near, another runner collided (碰撞) with Justin from behind and Justin crashed to the ground.

Dear Jim,
I'm very glad to hear that you will come to visit China. There is no doubt that a Chinese name will help you better fit in with the culture in our country.
A Chinese name usually consists of two or three characters, which often carry some special significances or expectations. Unlike an English name, the family name is usually put first. And then a given name follows. As you're kind, smart and energetic, I think Li Yang is most suitable for you. The family name is one of those shared by the largest number of Chinese. The given name means the sun in Chinese.
I hope you will like your new name and have a really good time in China.
Yours,
Li Hua
