Roughly the size of a soda can, sitting on a bookshelf, a relatively harmless device (设备) may be turning friends away from your home. The elephant in your living room is your Internet connected camera, a device people are increasingly using for peace of mind in their homes. But few stop to think about the effect these devices may have on house guests. Should you tell your friends, for instance, that they're being recorded while you all watch the big game together
“It's certainly new territory, especially as home security cameras become easier to fix,” says Lizzie Post, president of the Emily Post Institute, America's distinguished manners advisors. “I think it will be very interesting to see what manners appear in terms of whether you tell people you have a camera or not, and whether guests have a right to ask that it be turned off, if it's not a security issue.” Post wants to make clear that she's not talking about legal rights, but rather personal preference.
When it comes to security cameras, Post says it's a host's responsibility to make sure guests feel comfortable within their home. If the host casually acknowledges that there is a camera in the room by telling a story about it, that may be enough to provide an opening for a guest to say if they are uncomfortable.
However, if a contractor (合约工) is working in your home, you don't need to tell them that there are cameras watching. Then again, the camera can also work in contractors' favor. “If anything does go wrong while they're in the house, they don't want to be blamed for it,” she says. In fact, the camera could be the thing that proves that they didn't steal the $20, or knock the vase off the table.
24.The visitors are concerned that the security camera may ________.
A.threaten their health B.spoil their peace of mind
C.disturb their privacy D.affect their preference

A.It can prevent the accidents happening. B.It can prove their innocence.
C.It can record their working progress. D.It can make their work more enjoyable.
27.What's the author's attitude towards the security camera
A.Negative. B.Pessimistic. C.Favorable. D.Objective.

My school appeared on the news last week because we had made an important change in our local area. Our class had planted a large garden in what was once only a vacant lot. It was a lot of work but it was all worth it. I got blisters (水泡) from digging, and we all got insect bites, too.
I learned a lot about gardening and collaboration (合作), and then I learned about the media. Our teacher telephoned the TV station and informed them of what we had accomplished. She spoke with the producer. The producer checked with the directors, but they said there were plenty of stories similar to ours. They wanted to know what was special about our particular garden, since many schools plant them.
The teacher explained that, after going on the Internet to learn about the prairie (大草原), we had made a prairie garden. We had gone to a prairie and gotten seeds from the plants, and then we planted them. We did not water the garden, but we did weed it. We decided to let nature water it with rain, since that was how prairies grew in the past. We sent a picture of the garden to the news station. In the picture, the grass was so high that it stood taller than the fourth grade students.
As a result, the producer sent a reporter to our school. He interviewed the headmaster and asked him many questions about the garden. After that, they interviewed us, and we explained to them what we had learned through this project.
That night, we watched the news, and there we were. The news reporter told our story. It was only two minutes long, but it was us. We were famous. All that work, all those blisters, it was worth it. We knew that when we saw the garden every day, but now we knew that the whole city thought so, too.
28.What seemed to be the TV directors' initial reaction to the garden
A.They were excited. B.They were surprised.
C.They were worried. D.They were uninterested.
29.What is special about the garden
A.Weeds were allowed to spread naturally.
B.The grass grew faster than common grass.
C.The seeds came from the plants of a prairie.
D.Underground water was used for the plants.
30.What does the underlined word “that” refer to in the last paragraph
A.We got blisters on our hands. B.Our hard work was worthwhile.
C.The garden would be famous. D.The project would be finished.
31.How did the author feel about the project
A.Annoyed. B.Curious. C.Proud. D.Regretful.

If you're a male and you're reading this, congratulations! You're a survivor. According to statistics, you're more than twice as likely to die of skin cancer as a woman, and nine times more likely to die of AIDS. Assuming you make it to the end of your natural term, about 78 years for men in Australia, you'll die on average five years before a woman.
There're many reasons for this — typically, men take more risks than women and are more likely to drink and smoke but perhaps more importantly, men don't go to the doctor.
“Men aren't seeing doctors as often as they should,” says Dr. Gullotta. “This is particularly so for the over 40s, when diseases tend to strike. According to a recent survey, 95% of women aged between 15 and early 40s see a doctor once a year, compared to 70% of men in the same age group.”
“A lot of men think they're unbeatable,” Gullotta says. “They only come in when a friend drops dead on the golf course and they think, ‘Geez,__if__it__could__happen__to__him...’”
Then there's the ostrich (鸵鸟) approach. “Some men are scared of what might be there and would rather not know,” says Dr. Ross Cartmill.
“Most men get their cars serviced more regularly than they service their bodies,” Cartmill says. He believes most diseases that commonly affect men could be addressed by preventive check ups. “Prevention is cheaper in the long run than having to treat the diseases. Besides, the final cost is far greater, it's called premature death.”
32.Why does the author congratulate male readers at the beginning of the passage
A.They can live longer than they expected.
B.They are sure to enjoy a longer and happier life.
C.They have lived long enough to read this article.
D.They are more likely to survive serious diseases now.
33.Which of the author's statements is the most important reason that men die five years earlier on average than women according to the passage
A.Men drink and smoke much more than women.
B.Men don't seek medical care as often as women.
C.Men are more likely to suffer from deadly diseases.
D.Men aren't as cautious as women in the face of danger.
34.Which of the following best completes the underlined sentence “Geez, if it could happen to him...” in Paragraph 4
A.it could happen to me, too. B.it would be a big misfortune.
C.I should avoid playing golf. D.I should consider myself lucky.
35.What does Dr. Ross Cartmill mean by“the ostrich approach” in Paragraph 5
A.A casual attitude towards one's health conditions.
B.A new treatment for certain psychological problems.
C.Refusal to get medical treatment for fear of the pain involved.
D.Unwillingness to find out about one's disease because of fear.

第二节 概要写作(满分25分)
阅读下面短文,根据其内容写一篇60词左右的内容概要。
A class pet can be an invaluable experience for elementary school children. The pet can teach responsibility, build a connection to the classroom, serve as a motivator, and be something for children to love. If the teacher is willing to take on the added responsibility of caring for an animal in addition to all of children in the classroom, a class pet can be a wonderful addition to a class.
Many factors need to be taken into consideration when choosing a class pet. It cannot be too big, as classrooms generally have limited space. Cost should also be considered since the teacher will likely have to pay for the pet, its food and its habitat. It must also be somewhat hardy (耐寒的). Each particular type of animals has its advantages and disadvantages, and a teacher must weigh these and make a decision about which one is right for his or her class.
Birds are physically more delicate (娇养的) than many other animals. They will not survive in drafts (冷空气) and need a somewhat regulated temperature in their environment. Many birds are quite social and do best with other birds or when being handled routinely by people who can be appropriate with them. Young children are not likely to have the skill to handle a bird without harming it, making it a poor choice for a class pet.
Some reptiles are beautiful to look at but are delicate, afraid of cold, light sensitivity or poisonous and shouldn't be handled by children. Others are more hardy but require expensive habitats. Most snakes eat rats and mice, which may be a frightening thing for small children to witness.
A hardy fish, such as a betta, is a good low-cost option for a class pet. They are obviously not huggable or able to be caught by children. Besides, they are inexpensive, have relatively long life spans, and can be kept in a simple fish bowl.

Text 10
Hello, everybody. Today I'll introduce when and how the supermarket came into being. The first supermarket was opened about 80 years ago. It was opened in New York by Michael J.Cullen.
Cullen was born in 1884 and died in 1936. He had worked as a shop assistant in a store for nearly 30 years. Then he thought of a better way of selling things. In 1929, he wrote a letter to his boss, the owner of the company he worked for.
In the letter, the 45 year old sales manager thought of the idea of creating supermarkets. In the supermarkets, prices were reduced on some products to encourage buying. Goods were to be placed on open shelves so that they could easily be reached. The advantages of the supermarkets could be advertised on radios and newspapers.
He never received a reply. He left the company and moved to New York. In the summer of 1930 he opened the nation's first supermarket in somebody's old garage. Its name was King Kullen. It had everything modern supermarkets have: separate departments, self service, discount pricing, and chain marketing.
Other King Kullen stores soon followed and in 1936 sales had reached $6 million from 17 stores.
Today,King Kullen remains a family owned business with 47 stores.
