Saber Hosseini, who teaches children in the city of Bamiyan, central Afghanistan, has converted his bicycle into a mobile library which he rides to remote villages.
“I came up with the idea for this project six months ago. I started alone with 200 storybooks for kids, and started riding to remote villages throughout Bamiyan province. Soon, I recruited more volunteers and we have a collection of about 6,000 books.”
Hosseini revealed that he chose to use bicycles for his mobile library project for a number of reasons. Many of volunteers simply cannot afford cars and most of the villages in his province are only accessible by bike.
Hosseini does more than just distribute books to children — he also stops to talk to them about topics such as peace, tolerance, and why they should stay away from drugs. “One time, I talked to children in a village about guns, using the slogan ‘say no to guns and yes to books’. The next time I went to their village, the kids had gathered up all of their plastic toy guns and handed them over to me — but they had one condition: they wanted their village to be the first in the next round of book deliveries so they could get first pick. It was the most joyful moment of my life!”
Sadly, Hosseini is forced to work with a limited budget and cannot always afford to get the kinds of books that the children request — mainly comics about Batman that they've seen on TV. There are other dangers associated with his work too — he sometimes receives phone threats warning him to only distribute religious books or face dire consequences.
“These kids live such stressful lives — they live in a society that is full of death and violence, and they often face violence from their parents at home, too. So we want to keep delivering a bit of joy and calm in their lives through books,” Hosseini said.
24.When Saber Hosseini first started, ________.
A.he was lacking in funds B.he didn't have enough books
C.he was unwilling to ride D.he appealed for more volunteers
25.Hosseini uses bicycles for his mobile library project, because ________.
A.he is in favour of environment protection B.he is fond of taking exercise by bike
C.the majority of villages have bad roads D.cars are too expensive for all of volunteers
26.Which word can be used to describe Hosseini
A.Generous but adventurous. B.Caring and talkative.
C.Easy going and generous. D.Great but particular.
27.What does the fifth paragraph mainly tell us
A.The difficulties Hosseini is facing. B.Hosseini knows little about comics.
C.Dangers keep happening to Hosseini. D.Hosseini might give up his project.

UPS (联合包裹) driver Ryan Arens was making his rounds near a pond in Bozeman, Montana, when he heard an unearthly sound. “Like a cry for help,” he told theDodo. It was December 2019, and about 15 feet from the frozen banks was the source of that cry — a half submerged brown and white wirehaired hound (猎犬), struggling to hold to a thin layer of ice. How she got there no one knows, but an elderly man was already on the scene. He'd entered the pond in a rowboat and was knocked at the ice with a rock to create a path to the dog. It was slow going, and Arens, 44, thought he stood a better chance.
“Animals are my weakness,” he told theGreatFallsTribune, explaining why he stripped (拆开) down to his boxers and socks, even though the temperature was in the 30s, and commandeered the rowboat.
His heart thumping, Arens slid closer to the dog and used the other man's rock to smash away at the ice. He gave one strong knock and slipped off the boat, crashing into 16 feet of freezing water.
He resurfaced in time to see the dog going under. Using nervous energy to keep warm, he swam about five feet toward her, grabbed hold of her collar, and pulled her to the ice. He then boosted the dog into the boat and slid it back to the shore, where anxious bystanders carried the dog to the home of the rowboat owner, a retired veterinarian. Once in the house himself, Arens jumped into a warm shower with the dog until they both defrosted (解冻). A few more minutes in the pond, the vet told Arens, and she would have likely suffered cardiac arrest (心脏骤停).
The next day, Arens was back working the same neighborhood when the dog's owner came over to thank him for saving Sadie. “Would you like to meet her?” he asked.
He opened the door to his pickup (皮卡货车), and Sadie rushed out. She made a beeline for Arens, leaping on him and bathing him in wet kisses. That special delivery, says Arens, “was the highlight of my UPS career.”
28.What does the underlined word “unearthly” most probably mean
A.Terrifying. B.Strange. C.Interesting. D.Pleasant.

In most Western restaurants and homes, people have different manners when it comes to talking, eating and sitting.
Usually dinner is enjoyed with quiet voices, and people are not allowed to bring up anything unpleasant. For example, if someone wants to leave the table to the toilet, he or she has to do so without mentioning what he or she is going to do.
Meals are always eaten quietly. No eating noises are allowed and therefore people chew with their mouths closed. While drinking soup, coffee or wine, slurping (出声地喝) is also highly impolite. How to sit at the table also has rules. Everyone should sit up straight with one hand (usually the left) on his or her lap holding a napkin while the other hand (usually the right) holds the fork or spoon.Only when using a knife to cut something should one have both hands on the table, but as soon as the cutting is done, the hand should go back to the lap. Also, elbows are not allowed on the table. People should never reach across the table for any reason. Instead they should ask someone sitting near to pass what they want to them. For example, “Would you please pass the potatoes?”
As soon as you are seated, remove the napkin from your place setting, unfold it, and put it on your laps. At formal occasions, all diners cannot place their napkins on their laps until the host or hostess places his or her napkin on his or her laps. If your napkin falls on the floor during a very formal event, do not pick it up. You'd better signal a waiter and ask for a new one.
32.Which of the following is considered to be bad table manners
A.Drinking soup noiselessly.
B.Eating quietly.
C.Eating with your mouth closed.
D.Asking the host directly where the toilet is.
33.Mary has both of her hands on the table. She is probably using ________.
A.a fork B.a spoon C.a knife and fork D.chopsticks
34.When you sit at the table to have dinner, which of the following is allowed
A.Put your elbows on the table.
B.Reach across the table to get whatever you want.
C.Place napkins on laps before the host or hostess does.
D.Signal a waiter to ask for a new napkin if yours falls on the floor.
35.The best title of this passage should be “________”.
A.How to Behave at the Table B.The Right Way to Drink

第二节 读后续写(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
I was angry on seeing Jane entering the class and even more angry when I saw she was getting full attention by guys of our class. Reason being simple, she was the most beautiful girl in campus. She had perfect figure and sharp features. Her innocent smile took heart of many people. Not only that, she did many modeling contracts as well.
I envied her but today I hated her the most. Today for the first time I heard none from Sunny. He is my best friend and he is the coolest guy of college. He always takes care of wishes and fulfills them. But today when I proposed him, he said no. The reason he gave was, he loves Jane.
I was not at all attentive in my favorite class. Professor Smith was surprised to see me not answering. Yes I am the topper of class. Apart from my teachers, no one likes me. Everyone loves Jane. Even Sunny loves her.
I was rushing towards canteen when I heard Johnson, my classmate, calling me. Once settling in canteen she started gossiping as usual. But I was not in mood. All of a sudden she said, “Did you read the newspaper of today Jane is in the photo advertisement of tooth paste.”
I took a glance at the paper. She really had sparkling smile and glowing face. Even in simple clothes she looked so pretty.
I couldn't sleep. I was thinking about Jane. She was not the topper but definitely she was the distinction holder. She always helped everyone and was not proud of her looks. She used to talk to them, share biscuits she brought from home, and she was quite extrovert (外向的). She never stayed after college hours. She never attended any annual functions.
I envied her a lot. She had everything in her life. She even rejected Sunny's proposal for whom all girls including me were crazy. The next day in college I found Sunny sad. He was looking so bothered. I could make out from his look.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式作答。
He was my best friend and I did have some feelings for him though he rejected me.

I'm glad to know that you will be an exchange student in our high school for a year!
Next, I'd like to introduce some differences between Chinese and American teaching and learning. First, we have more students in each class than you do. Second, we have different teaching styles .The teachers usually give lectures in the class and the students will take notes. Third, the time when we stay at school is much longer than yours. We may spend at least 8 hours at school each day.
That's all I'd like to share. I can't wait to meet you!
Yours,
Li Hua
