What is the sky How high is it What colour is it What birds can live above it These questions are difficult to answer, aren't they
In fact, the sky has no colour. Then why does the sky look blue
We know that there is air around the world. When planes fly, they need air to lift their wings.Planes can't fly very high. That is because the air gets thinner when they go higher.
The same will happen to us if we go high enough. If we go up about 1, 200 kilometres from the earth, we'll find no air there. Some birds can fly into the sky as high as a plane, but they cannot fly or live without air.
Looking up above us, you will see the blue sky with white clouds. It is usually light blue. The colour would be bluer when you see on the top of a high mountain. And you will see fewer clouds in the sky between you and the sun.
Sometimes the sky doesn't look blue. When the sun rises and falls, you will see red, orange, and other colours in the sky.Such are the most beautiful moments of the day.
Who can see the colours of the sky high above the earth The astronauts! They can see those beautiful colours of the sky from the outer space. However, before flying into outer space, they sit in a spaceship high above the earth, and there is no air at all.The sky would be that dark and its colour would be black.
Now you may understand that we see colours because the air scatters (使散射) the sunlight.Light travels through the air.Without air, there would be no light or colours.
1.Planes can't fly as high as possible because______.
A.the sky is blue
B.the wings are heavier
C.the sky has no colour
D.the air becomes thinner
2.When you stand on the top of a high mountain, you will see______.
A.more air B. bluer skies
C.more colours D. more clouds
3.We might see many colours in the sky at______ during the day.
A.6:00 a. m. B. 9:00 a. m.
C.1:00 p. m. D. 3:00 p. m.
4.The sky changes colours because______.
A.it's colourful itself
B.the world is colourful
C.the sunlight has colours
D.the air scatters the sunlight
5.What does the passage mainly talk about
A.Birds can fly without air.
B.Why does the sky look blue
C.The living of the astronauts.
D.Why can the plane fly very high

One day a teacher did an experiment his students would never forget.
As he stood in front of the students, he pulled out a very big glass cup and put it on the table.
He then took out some fist-sized (拳头大小的) rocks and carefully placed them, one at a time, into the cup. When the cup was filled to the top he asked, "Is the cup full "
Everyone in the class said, "Yes."
He replied, "Really "
He reached under the table and pulled out a bag of gravel (碎石), then put some gravel in and shook the cup, and the gravel went down into the space between the big rocks.
He asked the students once more, "Is the cup full "
"Perhaps not," one of them answered.
"Good!" he replied.
He reached under the table and brought out a bag of sand. He started putting the sand in the cup and it went into all the spaces left between the rocks and the gravel. Once more he asked the question, "Is the cup full "
"No!" the class shouted.
Once again he said, "Good!"
Then he took out a cup of water and began to pour it in until the cup was filled. Then he looked at the class and asked, "What can you get from this experiment "
One eager student raised her hand and said, "The point is, no matter how busy you are, if you try really hard you can always put some more things in!"
"Good answer, but no," the speaker replied, "that’s not my point. The truth this experiment teaches us is: If you don’t put the big rocks in first, you’ll never get them in at all.
