Dear Mr. Davis,
I am Lihua, a participant in you continuation writing competition. Having scored only 16 for my continuation writing, I felt it unfair, so I am writing to you to state my reasons.
For my writing, I felt it totally meets the requirement put forward in the contest. To begin with, the structure of my composition is definitely clear and the plot develops reasonably, no prolixity at all. Additionally, the words and sentences used are colorful, without repeatedly using the same word again and again. I even wrote some compound sentences to update my writing, such as attributive clause, the emphatic pattern, inverted sentence and so on. Finally, a well-known saying is used to end my article, which I think is a perfect highlight of the passage.
In a word, with the merits mentioned above, I wonder why I got such a low score. If it is convenient for you, please give me an explanation.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua

A few days later, I received a call from my school, saying my college acceptance letter had arrived. Then I hurried to the school with my parents. It was beyond my wildest dream till that moment. As a matter of fact, I doubted then whether I was in the dream. I normally dreaded the long walk to the school. But that day was different. There seemed to be something in the air, an electric current, connecting my body to the letter. When I got it, I was really afraid that the envelop was empty. But there was a white package inside. With my heart beating faster, I wondered whether it could really be what was expected.
My parents excitedly said behind me, “Well, open the envelop!” What I grabbed in my hands contained everything I had been waiting for. Slowly, I opened it and a flash of CONGRATULATIONS in bold bright letters caught my eyes. A feeling of happiness and relief rushed through my body. I was holding my first offer from a good college. Needless to say, it wouldn’t have been possible if it weren’t for the countless hours of studying and writing, but most importantly, my parents’ constant reminders, in fact, were the best form of education for me. “Thank you, Mom and Dad!” I said gratefully.石河子市2023-2024学年高三上学期11月月考

At the airport, one of my partners greeted me with a broad smile. “Welcome to Cuba!” he exclaimed in perfect English, giving me a strong handshake and a hug. The next day, we drove to the research center where he worked. In the conference room, each of us gave a presentation about science and what we hoped to learn from the study of Cuban rivers.
Then, we toured every lab in the building. I met scientists, technicians, secretaries, students, and the cook. Some spoke English, and others communicated with me in Spanish while my cooperator translated. I was introduced to each person in their center, and that was what I remembered most.
Then we met again to brainstorm. Together, we studied maps carefully to plan how we were going to collect samples. Had it not been for the Cubans, I would have been unaware that the maps I had were outdated and wrong. They left out reservoirs, which was a problem because had we sampled downstream of them, our results would have been misled.
On the last night of the trip, we searched for a restaurant that could seat all 14 of us at one table because that’s what teams do--sitting together. When a restaurant couldn’t seat the team without splitting us up, my partners insisted that we move on and find another restaurant with a large enough table.
In 26 years as a professor, I’ve always tried my best to treat my students as valued partners. I have never been a fan of the grade system in the academic world. I urge everyone working with me to feel as though they are part of a team. But my Cuban partners take teamwork to another level entirely. They make it clear--through actions, both big and small--that all team members are valued, that everyone is equal, and that true team work contributes to better science.
I returned to the United States as a changed scientist. Now, I spend more time listening and making sure that everyone’s voice is heard.

A. Honesty. B. Perseverance. C. Cooperation spirit. D. Scientific theory.
17. What can we infer about the author from the text
A. He used to treat his students unfairly.
B. He used to be misled by other scientists.
C. He focuses on the opinions of the masses now.

Robots have learned to drive on Mars, carry out brain operation and defeat master chess players. But when it comes to baking, making tasty desserts is far from a piece of cake. After many failed attempts, US researchers have successfully 3D printed a cherry cheesecake, although the outcome is unlikely to trouble the world's dessert masters.
In the latest experiment, researchers tried various cheesecake designs. In early attempts, which involved simply adding ingredients one by one, the team found that the cake quickly turned into a mixture. Through trial and error, they discovered that a more architectural solution was needed. Walls of biscuit base were required throughout the cake to hold the softer ingredients, while triangular (三角的) biscuit supports on the inside were necessary to keep the cake from falling apart. "To print the cake successfully, we need to put the ingredients together in a careful way," said the team leader Cooper.
Although much work is still needed to collect data and improve the designs, scientists are hopeful that once mastered, 3D printing could replace traditional cooking, allowing food to be adapted to different nutritional needs. "We have a huge problem with the low nutrition of processed foods," said Cooper. "3D food printing will still produce processed foods, but perhaps the silver lining will be, for some people, a better control of nutrition based on personalized needs."
The team said 3D printing could also allow chefs to create entirely new food experiences, with flavours and textures (质地) placed very precisely. "It is particularly practical for the plant-based meat market, where texture and flavour need to be carefully designed to taste like real meats," said Cooper. And, with more concern about food safety, food prepared with less human handling could lower the risk of food-related illness and the spread of disease. According to Cooper, this seems like a win-win solution for all of us.
18.Why does the author mention robots in paragraph 1
A. To show the disadvantages of 3D printing.
B. To introduce the popularity of using robots.
C. To stress the difficulty of 3D printing desserts.
D. To explain the function of robots in different areas.
19.What is the key to the success of the 3D printed cheesecake
A. The thickness of biscuit walls. B. The flexibility of inside support.
C. The unique taste of ingredients. D. The structural design of the cake.
20.What do the underlined words "the silver lining" in paragraph 3 mean
A. The side effect. B. The main reason. C. The positive aspect. D. The best solution.
21.What is the last paragraph mainly about concerning 3D printed food
A. Promising markets. B. Additional benefits. C. Practical concerns. D. Technical challenges.

As we all know, most animals only perform tricks when given treats. However, Kim, the world’s first spider to learn a skill, needs no stimulus (刺激物) to do what she loves—jumping from different heights and distances— upon the instruction of a team of scientists from the University of Manchester.
While the idea of training a spider might sound evil, the researchers’ motives were purely scientific. They are trying to unlock the secrets behind the jumping spiders’ extraordinarily high leaps to catch prey (猎物) or to escape their enemies. A better understanding of the spiders’ leaps would help experts develop more efficient flying and jumping robots.
The scientists found that Kim could gather enough force in her legs to jump more than six times the length of her own body from a stationary position. What was even more amazing was that she always landed perfectly. For shorter distances, Kim used a lot of energy, resulting in quick leaps, which the researchers believe probably increases her chances of catching fast-moving prey. The farther the distance, the less extra energy was used, resulting in slower but precise leaps.
Previous studies have indicated that spiders use both their muscles and hydraulic (液压的) pressure—a mechanism by which blood is transferred to their extended legs—to push them off the ground. However, in Kim’s case, her leg muscles alone appeared to be generating enough force for the liftoff. The researchers now intend to do further research to comprehend fully not just the spiders’ jumping technique, but that of other insects as well. “We are familiar with robots that are aimed at taking over human functions, but there are millions of insects in the world that perform specific functions that we have interest in adapting to robotics,” says Nabawy, the leading engineer of the researching team.
22. What is the purpose of scientists’ researching the jumping spider
A. To have fun and relax. B. To help develop robots.
C. To get rid of spiders. D. To protect this species.
23. Why did Kim use a lot of energy for short leaps
A. To jump high enough. B. To land more precisely.
C. To catch fast-moving prey. D. To increase chances of escape.
24. What does the underlined word “that” in the last paragraph refers to
A. Jumping technique. B. Leg muscle. C. Further research. D. Energy for liftoff.
25. What can be a suitable title of this passage
A. Jumping Techniques Used by Jumping Spider
B. Jumping Spider Inspired Creating Robots
C. Animals Perform Tricks if Provided with Treats
D. The World’s First Spider That Jumps on Demand

Living in the shadow of my two elder sisters at college who already had their lives planned out since they were little, I was always undecided about everything. As a teenager, I was fickle (反复无常的). I would like one thing for a week and then hate it the next. But I was constantly searching for the beginning of the rainbow. Changing my dream from a vet to an astronaut, I thought there were various options available to me. However, my parents would shake their heads and repeatedly asked me such questions as, “Why can’t you be more like your sisters What are you going to do with your life Aren’t you interested in anything at all ” After a couple of shrugs (耸肩), my parents usually stopped talking. I was not sure if they gave up or anticipated my dull reactions. I often responded, “I couldn’t answer all of your questions now.”
Actually, my parents just had high expectations that never seemed to be fulfilled. Plus, like other parents, they just wanted to give the best to me and expected me to achieve success. The arguments with my parents seemed childish. One day, my mother made her thoughts clear, “Your grades aren’t high enough. No schools are going to want you, dear. We didn’t pay so much money for nothing.” Hesitating for a while, I said, “No matter what you say, I believe I will enter a good college.” Still, I let my emotions control myself.
Certainly, I had never planned not to go to college. After another debate with my mom, I decided to make a change. No longer would I sit back and let my parents mistake me for a bad boy. It was time to take action.
I knew it was a crucial year at high school. Releasing my feelings, I began to collect all the knowledge I had learned and review it with all my heart. I didn’t argue with my parents any more, but instead turned to my sisters for help and tried my best to study. Finally, I took the national college entrance examination with ease and confidence.
