Thanksgiving is basically a meal.
Thanksgiving dinner is a very important meal for Americans in the year.
Turkey and pumpkin pie are both essentials at the dinner table.

In1620, a group of people---English Puritans(清教徒), also called Pilgrim Fathers (清教徒先驱), who separated themselves from the Church of England(英国教会).
King Henry VIII broke away from the Roman Catholic Church(罗马天主教) and set up the Church of England.
Puritan beliefs were heretical(异教的) to the Church of England, so they were cruelly persecuted(迫害).
Pilgrim hat
35 puritans and 67 non-puritans took the ship called Mayflower to reach Plymouth, Massachusetts.
They established new settlement in Massachusetts Bay in 1620.
However, long before Europeans arrived, the area was inhabited by many native Americans.
The Wampanoag people had lived in the area for centuries.
(They are now called American Indians.)
Christopher Columbus, financed by the Spanish King, landed on one of the Bahamas Islands in the Caribbean Sea and “discovered” the New World in 1492.
Columbus mistook the islands for parts of India and so called the people there Indians.
The pilgrims’ first winter in the New World was difficult. They had arrived too late to grow any crops. Without fresh food and warm clothes, they suffered much hardship and about half of them died.
When spring came, they the Indians showed them how to hunt, fish and plant.
In 1621, Squanto was introduced to the Pilgrims at Plymouth, and subsequently acted as an interpreter between Pilgrim representatives and Wampanoag Chief Massasoit.

In the fall of 1621, the Pilgrims had a fine harvest of corn in fall.
They were thankful!
They made a feast and invited the Indians who had helped them.
This was the first Thanksgiving in North America.
Though it is not the traditional celebration for Chinese, learning to be grateful for what we have and express our gratitude can’t be harmful.
In the name of Thanksgiving, remember to say thanks to the things we have and the people we love.
