Six years ago, something unforgettable happened. My wife, Liz and I celebrated our 50th wedding anniversary that year. It was a lovely event hosted by our sons for us. Many wonderful friends from the past surprised us with presents and congratulations. Our gift to each other was a driving trip out west. We drove from Ontario into Alberta, then southward into Glacier National Park in Montana and continued to Yellowstone National Park.
It was a cold spring day and the Beartooth Highway had opened for the season just days before. Alongside the road there was still a great amount of remaining snow. The scenery was so impressive that we made numerous stops to record memories with my camera. At almost the highest point of the highway, I stopped at a lookout to catch the amazing views with my wife in the center of my camera lens(镜头) .
There were not many vehicles on the road. Occasionally, cars with energetic young tourists passed by. And then we heard a motorcycle in the distance. The driver of the motorcycle in rags(衣衫褴褛) parked behind our car. A she approached us, his only words were, “Give me your camera and get over there with your wife.” I must admit I felt nervous that we might be robbed where we just created some beautiful memories. Surprisingly, he just took a picture of us, handed back my camera and rode off before we could express our gratitude. The photo he took is one of the most cherished and prized of our trip.
I learned my lesson in the journey. We should never judge a man by his appearance. If the motorcycle driver reads this story and remembers the situation, we would like to say “thank you” to him.

Researchers have found a chemical from a kind of worm(蠕虫) can breakdown one of the most common forms of plastic. The finding could open up new ways to deal with pollution. There have been several studies showing that microorganisms can release enzymes(酶)that cause the plastics to start to breakdown, but that process may take a long time. The recently-discovered enzymes were found in the saliva(唾液) of the waxworm. They appear to actin only a few hours.
Federica Bertocchini is one of the researchers, who is also a beekeeper and always stores honeycombs, which are built by bees to store honey. One year Bertocchini found her honeycombs full of wax worms. She cleaned the honeycombs and put the worms in a plastic bag. When she returned later, she found that the bag was full of holes. She wondered if the worms were eating the plastic, or if there was a chemical reaction that caused the holes. “We checked and found that the plastics had been broken down,” she said.
In her latest research, Bertocchini and her co-workers found two enzymes in the worm’s saliva. The enzymes appeared to breakdown plastics in only a few hours.
Bertocchini’s team is still trying to understand how the worms breakdown the plastics. They know much more research is needed before the findings can be used to process plastic waste. However, Bertocchini said the enzymes could be put into a water mixture and then put “over piles of collected plastics” in a waste center. She said that, in the future, the enzymes could be used in homes, where families could deal with their own plastic waste.
28. What can we learn about the microorganisms in para.2
A. They are fond of eating small pieces of plastics.
B. They are widely used to deal with plastic pollution.
C. It takes long for their enzymes to breakdown plastics.
D. They can easily produce a large amount of useful saliva in a short time.
29. How did Bertocchini make the discovery
A. By accident. B. By keeping wax worms.
C. By doing experiments. D. By studying bees.
30. Why were there many holes in Bertocchini’s bag
A. The bees flew to and bit it.
B. There was a chemical reaction.
C. There were some sharp things in it.
D. The worms chewed and swallowed the plastic.
31. What does the author think about the new method of breaking down plastics
A. It’s a theoretical possibility, but it won’t happen.
B. It may replace the usual ways soon.
C. It is getting increasingly popular.
D. There is still a long way to go.
D
With the recent ban on iPhone 12 sales in France due to radiation concerns, a potential snowball effect might appear, as other European Union member states could follow suit(效仿). In a statement to the press earlier this month, France’s Digital Minister Jean-Noel Barrot said radiation from the iPhone model was above what is legally permitted according to national technology watchdogs.
The Specific Absorption Rate (SAR) for the iPhone 12, when worn close to the body, for example in trouser pockets, was found to be above the legal limit of 4wattsper kilogram. Apple now plans updates, in response to the radiation from iPhone 12, which is 5.74 watts per kilo, to be rolled out to all iPhone 12 owners across France.
The French government warned that failure from Apple would need it to recall all the iPhone 12s already owned by consumers within the country. Currently the World Health Organisation states that there is no scientific evidence to support the idea that mobile phone radiation could be harmful to humans.
Some organisations recommend caution for their use and support further definitive long-term research, which is why government safety guidelines are tentatively(实验性地) in place. It is true that phones emit radiation. However, it is generally assumed to be safe and is the same type used to transmit radio station frequencies.
This is a different type compared to other forms of radiation such as x-rays, which we know to be harmful. So far, no good explanations have been found to demonstrate that radiation from mobile phones can affect people’s health. It is also unlikely that they will increase cancer risk as the energy emitted is generally thought of by scientists as being too weak to damage DNA.
The issue has resulted in the French government expressing their attitude, and Apple is not the only manufacturer under scrutiny. Other brands such as Samsung and Motorola all have models which exceed the national limit. In fact, over 50 phone models across the major tech company sphere are included in the list by French technology watchdogs, with flagship products such as the Samsung Galaxy Note 10 and Motorola Edge all under scrutiny.
While it is unlikely that mobile phone radiation is likely to damage health, France’s dramatic assertion(断言) over a tech giant like Apple has caused others to follow suit. Mathieu Michel, Belgium’s secretary of state for digitization, has also vowed to investigate the issue for the country, while Germany and Italy are also paying close attention to any developments.
32. How much higher is the radiation from an iPhone 12 than that of the legal limit
A.1.32 watts per kilo. B.1.46 watts per kilo.
C.1.57 watts per kilo. D.1.74 watts per kilo.
33. What did the French government require Apple to do
A. To repair all the iPhone 12s sold in France.
B. To update all the iPhone 12s sold in France.
C. To ask for all the iPhone 12s to be returned.
D. To replace all the iPhone 12s with other types.
34. Which can replace the underlined word “scrutiny” in paragraph 6
A. Examination. B. Development. C. Instruction. D. Budget.
35. What is the best title for the news report
A. France promises to accuse Apple for iPhone 12
B. France’s iPhone 12 ban leads to Apple’s protest
C. France promises to reduce radiation level from iPhone 12
D. France’s iPhone 12 ban could lead to EU-wide tech regulation

Short words from Australia
Australians like abbreviations(缩略语). “Do you wanna hangout this arvo ” I said to my American friend. “What’s arvo ” They asked. Oops. I had forgotten that we Australians have so many slang(俚语) words. 36
Australians use abbreviations more often than any other English-speaking country, said Australian Geographic magazine, with one language expert compiling about 5, 000 abbreviations.
Australians like to abbreviate words by taking the first syllable(音节) of a word and then adding new endings on the words. 37 But there are many others too. For example, Christmas becomes “Chrissie”; barbecue becomes “Barbie”; sandwich becomes “sanga”; McDonald’s becomes “Macca’s”; and Australia becomes “Aussie”!
Unlike these words, which only Australians seem to use, some other Australian word inventions have taken the world by storm. 38 What about a “demo” (a demonstration) or a “muso” (a musician) These are all Australian-born abbreviations, said the BBC.
39 Nenagh Kemp, a psychologist at the University of Tasmania, told Australian Geographic that she thinks that these words help Australians to sound more friendly and less pretentious(做作的). Others say it started with prisoners who settled in Australia hundreds of years ago. 40
If you ever go to Australia, try asking an Aussie if they’ve ever had a Chrissie barbie in the arvo. I’m sure they’d enjoy that.
A. So why do we do this
B. They liked to use slang words.
C. You must have heard of a “selfie”.
D. Slang often goes in and out of fashion quickly.
E. Often, abbreviated words will end with “ie” or “o”.

W: Where have you put the flowers I left them on the table in the hall with some letters.
M: Well, they were in the way there, so I’ve put them in a vase in the bedroom.
W: Okay, thanks, but I think I’ll put them in the kitchen.
(Text 2)
M: What type of place are you looking for, Madam
W: Something small, and I don’t want to share with others. I don’t have a car so I don’t need a garage.
(Text 3)
W: Sorry, Ryan. I can’t go to the cinema with you today. I have got an appointment for a dental check-up at 3.
Could we make it tomorrow
M: OK. but I can ‘t come until 5 because I have to go to the hairdresser’s immediately afterschool.
(Text 4)
M: I personally like the chicken pasta with cream mushroom sauce, but the beef noodles are also very nice. What will you order
W: Hmm. I’d like to have the grilled chicken, but can I have a sandwich instead of pasta
(Text 5)
W: When can I collect my computer
M: Well, we’re a bit busy at the moment but we can get round to it by Friday. So if you come around next Monday...Oh, Monday is holiday, so pop round the following day then.
(Text 6)
M: I’m glad we’ve nearly finished now! What a day!
W: Mine hasn’t been too bad—the kitchen here is not that stressful to work in. You’ve been dealing with the customers.
M: Yeah, but it’ll be your turn next Saturday, won’t it
W: Yeah, then I’ll be exhausted! I’ll walk with you to the station if you’re ready.
M: OK, but I need to stop at the supermarket to get something for my mum.
W: Oh, well, I’ll meet you there—I’ve still got a bit of clearing up to do. I’ll see you outside the supermarket entrance in ten minutes.
(Text 7)
M: So what did you think of the party then There was certainly no shortage of stuff to eat.
W: True enough, though there were just cheeseburgers and chips you could get in one evening—there could have been a bit more variety if you ask me. But I thought the live band was great. Where did they find them
M: I don’t know. I guess somebody at college must know them somehow—anyway they certainly livened things up. But the college gym was not the ideal place to hold a party.
W: You’re right there, but at least the lighting was incredible.
M: Sure.
(Text 8)
M: Hello, Daisy. It’s me. I’m still in Brighton. Rob’s just left. I saw his business plan—to open a coffee shop.
W: So why does he need you
M: Rob asked me if I wanted to go into business with him. He told me that the plan had already been approved by the bank he’s borrowed 25, 000. And he wanted to know whether I could come up with the other half.
W: Where are we going to get that amount of money
M: Well, we’ve got 10, 000 saved up, and we could take out a bank loan for the rest.
W: Let’s just do it.
M: Yeah, it looks like an excellent investment. He’d been looking for a good location since August. Now he’s found the perfect place. And he said that he’d been talking to a designer, you know, to redo the inside of the shop. He wanted to know if I’d help with the advertising, which, of course I’d be happy to.
(Text 9)

W: When did you start getting interested in making pots
M: Well, as a child. I was into engines. A bit late in the day, I ever started a degree in physics. But by the time I was twenty, I was aware that there might be something else I wanted to do.
W: So what did you do
M: Well, I started traveling. I went to America first where I met my wife, Carole.

M: OK, so the Mini Olympic Games. Parents, make sure your kids don’t miss the opportunity to shine! The Games are on July the sixteenth, which is now only fourteen days away, and the latest your children can enter is the tenth. You just need to pay 10, and you’ll make a valuable contribution to our three aims. Firstly, we want to raise as much money as we can for medical research at the Children’s Health Centre. Secondly, we hope to raise money to build a new library, next to the swimming pool. Last but not least, we want to encourage children to take part in sport.
On the day itself, please get here with your children any time after 9: 30, when the gates open, and no later than 10: 00, as events begin at 10: 15 and they go straight through until 3: 30. There’s a wide range of events. Interest is likely to be the greatest in the football match, with volleyball coming a close second. If I could make a final request—we’ve had plenty entries for the long jump, but not enough for the high jump, and we don’t want to cancel that, so please see if you can persuade your kids to go for that. Thank you.

第一节
One possible version:
My favorite labour course
In response to the call of nationwide labor education, a series of labour courses have been launched recently in our school, such as planting vegetables, making things with our hands and repairing household appliances.
Sewing is my favorite course, where I can obtain a fundamental knowledge of essential life skills such as sewing a button, knitting a scarf, and making a cushion by operating a sewing machine. It is surely a rewarding and fulfilling experience, which can not only enrich our extracurricular life but also can help us acquire practical basic working skill for our livelihood(生计) and form the good habit of labouring.
The labour courses have won wide popularity among students and has a positive effect on the personal growth of everyone involved. If possible, an exhibition could beheld to demonstrate students’ well-designed works to show their creativity and talent.
第二节
One possible version:
We saw some children and their parents at the entrance when arriving at the stadium. As we were approaching the baseball field, we were a little late, for the match would soon start. The stadium was crowded with parents who came to watch their children’s game. Some were encouraging their children and some were telling them particular skills. My two children hung their heads and walked reluctantly to the field. At this time, I also felt sad. How I wished their father had come, and unconsciously turned my head to look at the entrance.
Just then, I received a call from my husband. He said, “I am arriving in a few minutes.” I turned back again and saw a familiar figure walking towards me and my sons. Gradually, he changed from walking to running. It turned out that the familiar figure was my husband—the father of my two children. He successfully came back in time for the game. We were all overjoyed to see him back. He encouraged the children to perform well and said he would always watch them play. At this time, the children ran to the field happily.
