Sample writing:
Dear Past Ben,
Hi! I'm Ben, your future self! I know that you are really worried about your future career, so I wanted to write this letter to put your mind at rest.
In the future, unfortunately (or should I say “fortunately” ),while computers are incredibly smart and can do many things, they still lack creativity. They cannot write novels, paint interesting pictures, or come up with recipes for new and exciting kinds of dishes. And this is where you come in—in the future, you will be a chef working at a fancy restaurant.
Of course, it won’t be the kind of job like chefs have now.You will mix and cook virtual ingredients on a heads-up display while a robot does all the real work for you. Since the system remembers everything for you, if you are satisfied with the new dish you can immediately have the dish added to the restaurant menu so that the kitchen chefbots can cook it for customers.
All in all, you will be happy with your new job, because we both like to eat! So stop worrying. Your future will be great. Trust me!
Best regards,
Future Ben
目标三: To get the information about the RoboBee and talk about your opinions on advantages of small robots over large ones
Activity 1: Before you watch
Predict what you are going to see. Think and circle the correct word(s) for each sentence.
1 RoboBees are like bees in that they fly independently/together,
but all work independently/together.
2 Robert Wood is an explorer/a roboticist.
3 In the future, RoboBees could help explorers/policemen and doctors/photographers.
4 All of the RoboBees have crashed/flown successfully.
5 Like bees, every RoboBee has a job to do/obeys a queen bee.
Activity 2: While you watch
1 Check your answers in Before you watch.
2 Complete the quotes by Robert Wood with words you hear in the video.
1. ... robotics is the ______________. It's the next big thing to ______________ in areas from medicine to even things like ______________ .
2. We use nature to ______________ that we build.

2. Specially, how might RoboBees be used in a future application
3. What other kinds of robots can be created from nature (e.g. a robotic lion or snake) How might these robots be used
1 A large robot often takes up too much space and has difficulty in moving. Small robots working together can easily enter a small space and move around.
2 They might be useful in rescue after a disaster. For example, if a building was blown down in a storm, they could fly into the wreckage and check for survivors.
3 A robotic spider could be useful as it could carry things across difficult uneven surface where wheeled vehicles can't go.
1.Try to describe your ideal robot.

Activity 2: Discuss these questions in groups.
1. How do you think these events or such technology might develop
in the future
2. What challenges might they bring
3. What opportunities might they bring
1. No doubt, AI will develop to the point that humans and computers will be
able to interface (communicate) effortlessly.
2. With the development of AI, there may come a time when it becomes a real
issue as to whether a computer or machine has in fact achieved
consciousness(意识) , and whether, as a conscious being, it deserves the same
rights as a human being.
3. AI may help us solve problems that are currently too big for us to solve on
our own. For example, complex(复杂的) AI models may be able to use given
data to develop a workable solution to global warming.
Activity 3: Listen to a conversation and answer the questions.
1. Where does this conversation take place
2. Who are the speakers
3. What is the topic of the conversation
In a studio.
The interviewer and the guests of a program—two experts from different fields.
It’s about their predictions about the future.
Activity 4: Listen to a radio interview with Dr Han and Vincent Black again, and then fill in the table below.
Listen for predictions
When listening for predictions, you should listen for
the use of the future tense, in particular the future
tense with will or will be doing. Words such as predict, prediction, and forecast, are also used quite often when making predictions.
Name Occupation Prediction
Dr Han
Vincent Black
computer scientist
architect
Computers will be cleverer than us in the future;
people will also be programming computers to
think like humans; we'll be programming them
to not think in ways that may harm humans;
we'll also be creating machines to help people
internally.
There will be cities floating on water and people could move into housing in cities that float.
Activity 5: Listen and catch the language used for making predictions from the listening. Then group them.
H: I forecast that computers will be cleverer than us in the future.
H: I think that people will also be programming computers to think like humans.
I: But are you worried that such computers would be dangerous
H: This is because we'll be programming them to not think in ways that may harm humans. In fact,we'll also be creating machines to help people internally.
H: For example, I think scientists will put some small intelligent machines called nanobots inside our bodies to increase our abilities
I: That would make each one of us superhuman!
V: I believe that cities floating on water are part of the world's future.
I: What might make us want to do that
V: I think that people could move into housing and cities that float.
1. future tense: will, will be doing
2. sentence pattern: I forecast/think/believe
3. modal verbs: would, may, might, could
Activity 6: Work in pairs. Discuss whether you think Dr. Han and Vincent Black’s predictions are possible. Why or why not
Suggested answers:
I agree on Dr Han's idea that computers will be cleverer than us in the future. Actually there are already computers, like AlphaGo, that are smarter than most people.
I don't agree on Vincent Black's idea about floating cities because I doubt that sea levels will rise that much.
目标二: To talk about your future job and predictions
Activity 1: In groups, brainstorm about the future. Discuss these points.
future events or problems the world might face
future technologies
how these things will change the way we live
the challenges and opportunities these things might bring
I think/believe/predict that in the future...
My prediction is that... By 2030, we will...
In the (distant) future there will... I can imagine/forecast...
I doubt/don’t think that ... One challenge will be ...
We will have the opportunity to ... We will be doing...
We are going to do...
Making Predictions
Activity 2: Imagine that you have a job that makes you an expert in the future. In pairs, interview each other about your jobs and predictions.
Tips:
You may organize your ideas by
* presenting the challenges or opportunities
* offering the technologies or solutions
* predicting the possible effects
Sample Dialogue:
A: Good afternoon, Ms Zhang. Thank you for agreeing to do this interview.
B: I'd love to.
A: First, could you please tell our audience what you do
B: Certainly. I'm a doctor.I perform transplant surgery every week.
A: That sounds like a very high-tech job. How do you think the surgery will be operated in the future Do you have any predictions about that
B: Yes, well, I believe that doctors in the future will have much better means to help people. I can imagine that nanobots will be put in patients’ body to detect the illness.
And in the future, there will be adequate supply of organs for patients who need transplant.
A: Well, that would be really good news for all of us. Could you please explain how this will be possible
B: Well, it will be possible because of special 3D printers. In the future, doctors will be using them in hospitals regularly to create healthy copies of people's organs. Then they will replace the unhealthy organs with the healthy copies.

1 In what way is the home of tomorrow already the home of today
2 What might be some of the disadvantages of smart homes
1 Many of the new innovations are already used in some homes today. This is true especially of automatic controls for things such as lights and air conditioners.
2 One disadvantage is that if there is a problem with the system, you may find yourself locked out of the house or unable to turn your TV off or on. Security is another big concern,as strangers may be able to hack into the system to collect information about your life and use that for evil purposes.

Sample writing:
Should we advocate or fight against robots
Robots is playing an important role in both industry and our daily life, but people's opinions about robots differ.
On the one hand, Some people think that robots are very important to human's future development. For example, they can do dangerous tasks for human beings. Moreover, they are helpful to improve the efficiency of work.
On the other hand, others think that they are dangerous and have negative effects on the society. For example, robot may lead to people's poor creativity, flexibility and self-motivation.
In my opinion, the advantages prevail over the disadvantages as long as we can use them properly.
