Then listen and answer the questions.
1.Why does Dr Wang say “money isn’t everything”
2. What is the real reason Anna admire the famous people, and what examples does she give

Listen for reasons
When people give their opinions or decisions on a matter, they often give reasons for them. Sometimes, the reason is introduced by words such as because or due to. At other times, the reason is given right after the opinion or decision, and the link can be inferred.
Listen for reasons
1. Why does Dr Wang say “money isn’t everything”
2. What is the real reason Anna admire the famous people, and what
examples does she give
3. What kind of person do you think Wang Lin admires Why
Listen again and answer the questions.
Because he doesn’t believe that money alone is a true measure of success.
Because they have worked so hard to achieve their goals and have positive contributions to society. She mentions Elon Musk and Bill Gates.
She admires people that do good things and inspire her, because she mentions these two things when she talks about how wonderful her father is.
目标二:To use language fillers to make natural conversations and state your understanding and opinions of great people
Activity 1: Work in groups. Brainstorm the names of some great people and write them in the table below.
Ordinary people
Environmentalists
Inventors
Scientists
Explorers
Politicians
Shi Chuanxiang, Lin Qiaozhi, ...
Li Guibai, Liu Peitong, ...
Thomas Edison, Bi Sheng, ...
Tu Youyou, Newston, Einstein, ...
Marco Polo, Columbus, Xu Xiake, ...
Mao Zedong, Mahatma Gandi, Mandela, ...
Activity 2: Discuss what makes these people great. Try to use the following language fillers to give yourself time to think.
Giving time to think
(Er/Oh/Um,) let me see/think ... Right./Sure.
Well, er, ... Really
Yeah, I mean, I understand what you’re saying Well, I guess, ...
Anyway, ... You see/know, ...
Just a moment. So, ...
Hang on a second. Well, it's on the tip of my tongue.
May I think about that for a moment I've nealy got it, er, ...
How can/shall/should I put this/it What I want to say is ...
Let me think about this/that for a moment.
Sample dialogue:
S1: To me, Bill Gates is a great man.
S2: Why do you think that
S1: Well, I guess, because he’s one of the world’s most successful
businessman. You see, almost everyone use his product on their computers.
S2: Let me think about that for a minute....I guess that’s true, but I don’t think
that makes him great. When Gates started out, there were many other
computer systems that were just as good or better than Windows. He didn’t
invent something completely new. He was just lucky.
S1: Well, er, maybe luck had something to do with it, but great people make their
own luck because they’re clever and work hard.
S2: I don’t really think that’s true. A lot of clever people work hard and never
have a good luck.
S1: Then who do you think is great
S2: Thomas Edison, because he had so many inventions that helped
mankind. The light bulb, the record player, films… The world we live
in now is a world that Edison made for us. Without his original ideas,
we would not have much of the modern technology we have today.
S1: I’m not sure that his ideas were totally that original. For example,
Edison didn’t really invent the light bulb. The idea for the light bulb
had been around for a long time, but because Edison worked harder,
he was able to succeed where many people had failed.
S2: Hang on a second. I believe that Edison’s inventions have helped far
more people than Bill Gates.
S1: I simply disagree.
S3: You know, I think that I have to disagree with both of you. The greatest person I
know of is John Watson.
S1: Really Who’s he I’ve never heard of him.
S3: How shall I put this He’s just a regular guy. One night he was taking his dog
for a walk when he saw a house on fire. A woman was standing outside the
house screaming because her two kids were trapped inside and were going to
burn to death. John didn’t even think twice but just ran into the burning house
to look for them. He found both kids upstairs in their bedroom, hiding in a closet.
He took them one by one and dropped them out of window to safety. But the fire
became too strong, so he wasn’t able to make it out himself.
S2: Wow! He gave up his own life to save others. What a brave man! Well, I guess
you don’t have to be famous to be great.
S1: I guess not.
Activity 3: Use your discussion to draw conclusion about the meaning of greatness. The following expressions may help you. Then report back to the class.
The greatest person I know of is..., who...
has achieved financial success
To be great, a person should ...
has invented new products
To me, greatness means ...
has made great discoveries
Why do you think that
serves as a good role model
That's true, but ...
brings happiness to other people
I want to be like_____ because he/she ...
makes great contributions to society
Sample report:
Hello, everyone! The greatest person I know of is Dr. Zhong Nanshan, who managed the SARS outbreaks in China in 2003. Now it's he who prevented the COVID-19 from quick spread all over the country once again. To me, greatness means sacrifice and devotion. Dr Zhong Nanshan took risks entering the isolated area to cure the patients, summarizing the infected but recovered cases and sharing his successful experience with other home and abroad doctors. He serves as a good role model and makes great contributions to society. That's all. Thank you!

Sample writing:
When people talk about sacrifice and charity for others, the name that most often comes up in my mind is Mother Teresa. In fact, she is so famous for her work that her name is most often used nowadays as a point of comparison by which others are judged (for example, “He may do some good work, but he's no Mother Teresa”).Interestingly, though her name is still heard quite often, many younger people have no clear idea who she was.
Mother Teresa's real name is Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu. She was born on 26 August 1910 in Skopje, where is now the modern-day Republic of Macedonia. When she was a young girl, she decided that she wanted to help poor people in India, so when she was 18, she left home and eventually made her way to Darjeeling, India. She formally became a nun in 1931, and took “Teresa”as her new name. In the beginning, she was just a teacher of other nuns. However in 1946 she felt stirred to help the poorest of the poor in Calcutta(modern-day Kolkata). She began to work full-time there in 1948 and was allowed to form her own charity group in 1950. In time, her group grew to thousands of members, helping orphans,
refugees, the disabled, the most ill, and the poorest people around the world. However, Mother Teresa is most famous for her Home of the Dying and the Destitute in Calcutta. This work began when she found a poor man dying alone in the street of Calcutta, and decided that she had to do something to help,as nothing could be worse than dying alone in the streets.Workers for the Home of the Dying and the Destitute would find dying people in the streets, and bring them to the centre, where they would be cared for, fed, and loved until their final moments. For her work, Mother Teresa was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979.When she died on 5 September 1997, she was given a state funeral by the government of India, which was attended by more than 15,000 people and broadcast around the world on TV, with many world leaders singing praises to her.
People who met Mother Teresa often remarked at how small she was—she was only 152 cm tall. She was also very quiet and gentle in the way she behaved. This all proves that even the smallest or gentlest people can still do great and mighty things.

Even though Keller wrote this autobiography when she was only 22 years old, it is considered a great book in American literature. It tells about her dark and silent childhood, and how her teacher Anne Sullivan, opened up a new world to her by teaching her how to communicate.

Activity 3: Present your book report to your group. Answer any questions about the book.
Sample Writing:
The Story of My Life, by Helen Keller, 1903
Helen Keller (1880-1968) was one of the most motivational figures in the 20th century. In many ways, she stood in the face of a great challenge, losing her sight and hearing at a very young age, and against all odds led a successful and long life. Helen Keller wrote this biography herself at the age of 22. She wrote at first about her family before her illness, and then continued with documenting her thoughts and feelings after the illness that caused her to become unable to hear and see. It is Helen Keller's strength of character and determination demonstrated in this book that inspires me most. Anyone interested in her and in how to overcome challenges in life should read this book.

Activity 4: In pairs, discuss how people can achieve success, using words and expressions you have learnt in this unit.
Example:
Everybody is eager to be a successful person in his life. But not all people can always succeed. People who are lazy and want to succeed only by daydreaming can hardly succeed. A successful person must possess some good characters, such as diligence, strong will, perseverance, etc. He must keep on learning and make himself a capable person. Sometimes he should be more flexible to change with the situations. All in all, serf-confidence is the first step on the road to success. And hard work is the key element of success.
