“Life is about daring to carry out your ideas,” said Italian mountaineer Reinhold Messner.
One of the best-known living mountaineers, now 74, Messner became the first person to climb Mount Qomolangma alone and without the help of bottled oxygen (氧气) in 1980.
He also became, in 1986, the first to reach the world’s 14 mountain tops of over 8,000 meters, again without bottled oxygen.
Along the way, he has practiced a special style of mountaineering known as alpinism, in which climbers try to reach the top with as little material (材料) and outside help as possible.
But it is an art that is increasingly getting lost — today’s climbers depend on Sherpas (local guides for climbers in the Himalayas) and ready-made routes to reach the top, Messner said.
“The true alpinist doesn’t want such help. He wants to go into the wild,” he said.
His achievements have made him a great hero, but Messner says he has gotten into plenty of dangerous situations along the way, too.
“Around half of the top alpinists have died climbing,” he said.
“Of course, if I turn back more often than the others, I can increase my chances of survival,” he added. “But if I hadn’t been lucky a few times, I wouldn’t be here.”
Messner later moved on to different challenges (挑战), crossing the Gobi Desert and Antarctica.
He is also a writer and was in Frankfurt to present his latest book, “Wild”, telling the true story of a 1916 Antarctic expedition (探险).
Today, Messner spends his time making films and talks excitedly about his present one, which is set in Kenya, Africa, and tells the story of two climbers who run into trouble and are faced with life-changing situations.
After a lifetime of following his next dream, he believes film-making will be his final project.
“I was always at my best when I was learning, when I was curious (求知的),” he said.

Too much screen time for kids can lead to poor health the American Heart Association (AHA) says. A scientific statement published by the AHA in the medical journal Circulation said screen time from smartphones, tablet computers and other devices can lead kids to a sedentary(惯于久坐不动的) lifestyle ,increasing the possibility that they grow up as overweight or obese(肥胖的).
The AHA is the latest organization urging parents to limit how much time their kids spend in front of screens. It recommends children get one to two hours of screen time each day. Although television viewing among children and teens has dropped, the use of smartphones and tablet computers has surged.
“Although the mechanisms(机制) linking screen time to obesity are not entirely clear, there are real concerns that screens influence eating behaviors, mainly because children don’t notice when they are full when eating in front of a screen,” said Tracie Barnett, a researcher at the INRS-Institut Armand-Frappier Research Centre,in a statement.
Barnett, one of the authors of the statement, also urges parents to keep screens out of kids’bedrooms, raising the fear that too much screen time can affect sleep.
Many studies have warned about the potential (潜在的) negative effects of too much screen time. Last year, a study from researchers at San Diego State University(SDSU) found nearly half of teens who spent five or more hours in front of screens every day experienced long periods of hopelessness or sadness.
Apple, who makes the iOS mobile platform, plans to introduce new tools to devices to help users cut back on screen time. As for iOS 12,iPhones will include a screen time feature where users can control and review how they spend time on their mobile devices. Another company that makes the Android platform will introduce “digital well-being” tools such as screen time limits and a “wind down” option to encourage users to put down their phones before bed.
8. Which can replace the underlined word “surged” in paragraph 2
A. Increased suddenly. B. Decreased slowly.
C. Stayed the same. D. Lost the balance.
9. How do screens influence children’s eating behavior
A. By changing the time they eat. B. By changing their taste for food.
C. By influencing how fast they eat. D. By influencing their feeling of fullness.
10. What effect did too much screen time have in SDSU’s study
A. It affected children’s sleep. B. It led to children’s obesity.
C. It resulted in diet problems. D. It negatively influenced moods.
11. What will Apple do to deal with the screen time problem
A. Reduce its products’ battery life.
B. Provide a screen time feature.
C. Introduce “digital well-being” tools.
D. Add a “wind down” option to its products.
D
For many parents, raising a teenager is like fighting a long war, but years go by without any clear winner. Like a border conflict between neighboring countries, the parent-teen war is about boundaries: Where is the line between what I control and what you do
Both sides want peace, but neither feels it has any power to stop the conflict. In part, this is because neither is willing to admit any responsibility for starting it. From the parents’ point of view, the only cause of their fight is their adolescents’ complete unreasonableness. And of course, the teens see it in exactly the same way, except oppositely. Both feel trapped.
In this article, I’ll describe three no-win situations that commonly arise between teens and parents and then suggest some ways out of the trap. The first no-win situation is quarrels over unimportant things. Examples include the color of the teen’s hair, the cleanliness of the bedroom, the preferred style of clothing, the child’s failure to eat a good breakfast before school, or his tendency to sleep until noon on the weekends. Second, blaming. The goal of a blaming battle is to make the other admit that his bad attitude is the reason why everything goes wrong. Third, needing to be right. It doesn’t matter what the topic is—politics, the laws of physics, or the proper way to break an egg—the point of these arguments is to prove that you are right and the other person is wrong, for both wish to be considered an authority—someone who actually knows something—and therefore to command respect. Unfortunately, as long as parents and teens continue to assume that they know more than the other, they’ll continue to fight these battles forever and never make any real progress.
12. Why does the author compare the parent-teen war to a border conflict
A. Both are about where to draw the line.
B. Both can continue for generations.
C. Neither has any clear winner.
D. Neither can be put to an end.
13. What does the underlined part in Paragraph 2 mean
A The teens tend to have a full understanding of their parents.
B. The teens agree with their parents on the cause of the conflict.
C. The teens cause their parents of misleading them.
D. The teens blame their parents for starting the conflict.
14. Parents and teens want to be right because they want to ______.
A. give orders to the other
B. know more than the other
C. gain respect from the other
D. get the other to behave properly
15. What will the author most probably discuss in the paragraph that follows
A. Solutions for the parent-teen problems.
B. Examples of the parent-teen war.
C Causes for the parent-teen conflicts.
D. Future of the parent-teen relationship.

A. The teens tend to have a full understanding of their parents.
C. Causes for the parent-teen conflicts.
D. Future of the parent-teen relationship.
【答案】12. A 13. D 14. C 15. A
【解析】
【分析】本文是说明文。文章分析了父母和孩子之间战争的实质、原因、表现形式和解决办法。
【12题详解】
推理判断题。根据第一段For many parents, raising a teenager is like fighting a long war, but years go by without any clear winner. Like a border conflict between neighboring countries, the parent-teen war is about boundaries: …可知父母和孩子之间的战争最后没有明确的赢家,就像邻国之间的边界冲突。作者把二者相比,是因为二者都是关于界限的。故选A。
【13题详解】
句意猜测题。上句From the parents’ point of view, the only cause of their fight is their adolescents’ complete unreasonableness.说明从父母的角度来看,唯一的原因是他们的孩子完全不讲道理。画线句子the teens see it in exactly the same way,指的是孩子也用相同的方式看这个问题。根据下句Both feel trapped.可推测孩子认为父母不讲道理,引起了矛盾。D项表达了此意,故选D。
【14题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段the point of these arguments is to prove that you are right and the other person is wrong, for both wish to be considered an authority—someone who actually knows something—and therefore to command respect.
In this article, I’ll describe three no-win situations that commonly arise between teens and parents and then suggest some ways out of the trap. 在这篇文章中,作者将描述三种通常出现在青少年和父母之间的不成功的情况,然后建议一些方法来摆脱这种陷阱。最后一段中介绍了三种情况及具体表现,所以推测下段应该是问题的解决办法。故选A。
